Introducing: Traditional Torch Patina

- In this video we introduce a brand new patina from Sculpt Nouveau. Traditional Torch Patina is a cold process to develop rainbow effects on bronze, brass, copper, and even steel with the help of the Traditional Copper Plate Patina.

Nice video, very well explained. I really loved the greenish tones in the second ones. I’m wondering if I could get same results on a copper fountain pen like the Kaweco Lilliput 🤔
You would have to clean off the coating they have over the copper but if it is a real copper they are making the pens out of, then you should be able to get a similar reaction.
I want a super-grimy look, like it just came out of the harbor. What will the result be if I use these methods on already partly-rusted, scratched, banged up mild steel?
Really tough to answer that one. If I had to guess, you would get some reaction from these patinas but if you did not clean the metal it would likely be close to what you started with but with some areas where copper colors are coming through. I think it would be easier to do this and then add the rust where you want it to be rusty.

Hello hope you see this but I have a question, on raw copper and brass do you have to sand them for this to work?
Sanding is not necessarily required but it is recommended. The metal need to be cleaned at the very least. If the patina cannot come in contact with the bare metal, then it will not react correctly.
That steel is not stainless, correct?
Correct, regular steel.
Can you use a piece of tape or something to cover certain areas of the steel that you don't want the patina?
You can, but the problem is that tape often leaks. I have used Plasti Dip with good success however.

What does Smart Coat Matte yeild if applied to the copper plating and torch combo on steel? I thought it was just a clear sealant but this demo used color lock? I should have done my homework before purchasing..
Smart Coat Matte should yield similar square footage to the ColorLoc. Matte clear coats wont make the finish pop like a satin or gloss will however. Square footage for a spray can is about 25 square feet.

im sorry...but, on the second steel piece....was that application cold or the 220 degrees your website said to use???
All of these were a cold process. The hot process one on the website is for the Rainbow Patina.

Can you use Renaissance Wax to protect the patina?
Shouldn't be a problem, since that is not one of our products, I would suggest a test sample first to be safe.

Will one achieve a similar effect with torch using the steel metallic paint B as a base rather than a steel sheet. A great effect by the way....
Unfortunately no, for this to work it must be on bare steel with the Copper Plating Patina.

Haven't tried but as long as you can get down to the bare metal, it should work.

How durable is this finish? would it survive scuffing if it were on a bar front?
Durability is determined by the clear coat. For a bar top, use Ever Clear and I would maintain it with wax.
I’m going to build a rat rod car and would love to try the copper plating and torch method on the car.
Is it necessary to seal it with a clear coat after you are done? what will happen in time if you don’t?
I’m planning to leave patchy paint in some areas, how will the 2 methods effect the paint?
It does require a clear coat. Left untreated, it will rust. The patinas should not effect the existing paint but you should do a test in a small area to make sure.
Can this be done on aluminum?
Unfortunately no this process does not work on aluminum.
Why do you discourage sandblasting as method of cleaning metal?
Typically it will dull the finish out or show the texture from the sandblast. The patina will react just fine if that is how you want to prepare the metal.
Could I do this on corrugated galvanized steel? I want to build a raised bed garden, but don't want the shiny silver look.
These patinas do not work on zinc unfortunately. If you sanded off the zinc coating down to the steel then it should work just fine.

@@Jdselby3 It varies, just depends on the manufacturer. I have sanded through thin coatings very easily before but I have also had other coatings be a bit of work.
So im doing a bar top, should i attach the copper to the mdf first and then patina or should i patina the copper than attach. Its 8 ft long
Great question. When possible, I always prefer to do any fabrication first prior to patination. So if you need to bend the copper around the MDF, attach it then do the patina. This only works on cold processes but if you are using the Torch patina like in this video, it will be fine.

Can I use colorloc to lock the color of a patina instead of using a clearguard?
Absolutely!
Will this work on Zinc, pot metal?
Unfortunately no it does not work on zinc. The Copper Plating needs to react with iron.
If I used this on a large cleaver is it food safe?
It would look cool on the wall, I would not recommend using it to actually cut food or anything though. We do not have FDA ratings or anything like that to determine it as food safe.

This process will not work on stainless steel. You would need to do a non reactive finish. Try either Solvent Dyes or Smart Stains.
would this work on copper wire?
I haven't tried that yet. It will cause a reaction, but it may just be more of a solid bluish color. Since it wont be a big surface area, there may not be much variation in color.

@@lovedicedtomatoes9653 Copper leaf is very thin, most acids like these will just eat through them unfortunately. Maybe if you build up a few layers you might get some reaction though.
WIll this work on metal roofing?
Should be fine, just do small sections since bigger surface areas can be difficult to do quick enough.
