@@ArthurBrassart Hi Arthur, I once transferred photos app on a hard drive then i decided to put it back on the mac, since then the photo app doesn't let me import new photos on my mac anymore. can you help please?
@@ArthurBrassart oops after I make the link. I try to back up phone data on HDD via iTunes, but it won't store. Itunes pops up with a message of no space in MacBook.
It worked! Thanks a lot! For those who can't see the Mobilesync folder. Press the “Command” + “Shift” + “.” (period) keys at the same time. The hidden folders will become visible. Also, for my Mac, I needed to go through the "Library" under my username. Not the "Library" under "Macintosh HD."
Apple doesn’t offer it because they want to push you into buying iCloud subscription. Two reasons for that: 1. revenue. 2. Gives them access to ALL your data.
Also the same reason why they killed their BRILLIANT Airport wireless external hardrive. Something I want to buy and replace the hard drive with a 6TB drive
Apple made these forced storage alternatives a staple…unfortunately, I find that a lot of other companies are moving toward the same models. Granted the others were free services to begin with…but some email clients used to offer 2x or 3x the storage…and recently stripped those higher limits. Google has remained pretty consistent, but being that all of their services such as Drive, Photos, Emails, etc. are all tied together…I’ve recently hit my cap and have to keep going back in and deleting all unwanted emails, and unsubscribing…but I still continue to get regular emails filling up the inbox. I hit the cap on my outlook as well, because I believe they reduced the storage capacity to about 1/2 of what it was before. Both companies offer you the ability to either purchase more space, or delete a sufficient amount of data. It become monotonous. I think I’m going to get Thunderbird, which is supposed to be pretty good at managing, auto-deleting unwanted emails, and unsubscribing effectively…you generate the preferred settings.

Thank you so much for this!!! I didn’t have enough space on my iMac to backup my iPhone. So happy I can use one of my external drives for this. Much smarter to do it this way in my opinion than keeping the backup on my computer where it’s not needed. And I can easily backup the external drive to another drive for an added layer of security! :)
I tried this and did a backup and says, "Last Backup: Today" but my External Hard Drive no longer showed the "Backup" folder in the External Hard Drive... although the MobileSync folder showed the shortcut to the "Backup" folder (aka External Harddrive). Plus, the external hard drive says 0 bytes on disk after doing this "Back Up Now" process. I had to do a Force Eject of the external hard drive and reconnect. Then, the external hard drive kicked in a showed the backup did indeed WORK! Yay. Thank you for posting this video.

Hi Arthur, this was so clear and very helpful, thank you. I believe I have followed all the steps correctly, and now my iPhone is backing up to the Backup folder on my external hard rive. The only problem is, that I have many folders appearing (00, 0a, 0b, 0c and so on) which are all empty. I have a mac Mini M1 and find that after doing what you advised, I have the linked iOS Backup in my Mac's MobileSync folder, but each time I create a new phone or iPad backup, a new backup folder is created in mobile sync rather than in the linked folder to my SSD. Heyy amazing video, when i wanted to back it up it said i that i don’t have enough space on my macbook. Sow idk what to do now cuz my hard drive has 4tb sow idk if i did something wrong.
Hi, you can buy any hard drive that fits your budget. There are no rules here. If you want to have better speed choose the SSD - for Example, Samsung T7. If you want to have bigger storage for cheaper - you can buy a classing old-style spinning hard drive.
Thank you for the fantastic tutorial! Would this work if you want to use the same computer to back up multiple phones using different external hard drives?
Hi, thanks for your comment :) To unlink folders you have 2 choices: Open the Terminal utility and enter a line in the following format: rm /symlink location. (Symlink location is the folder that have little arrow - where you created link. You can drag and drop it to terminal.) If you aren’t very comfortable with Terminal commands can use the good old regular method: right-click the symlink you want to remove (folder with arrow link you created) and select Move to Trash. Be sure to empty the Trash folder when you’re done :)
Thank you so much for this information. It worked! I, too, had to listen to step 3 a few times until I understood what I was doing wrong. Which was don't hit return until all the drag and drops are completed. I also had to add the terminal app to the list of applications that had total disk access. I can't believe that I just freed up 145GB on my Mac. Are there any other data storage hogs that don't need to be on the built-in hard drive? Thanks again. AMAZING STUFF!

Thanks a lot. Works like a charm and one of the most painless instructions I've come across. Why does Apple have to make it so complicated.
thanks :D Apple makes it hard to push you buy more iCloud storage and make more money ;)
worked like a charm!!! thanks!
You're welcome!
Thanks for the tutorial. After backup would I be able to restore my data to new device as normal or there is different procedure to that.
Thanks

Same happended to me,
Can you suggest an external hard drive? Thank you so much!
Hi, you can buy any hard drive that fits your budget. There are no rules here. If you want to have better speed choose the SSD - for Example, Samsung T7. If you want to have bigger storage for cheaper - you can buy a classing old-style spinning hard drive.
@@ArthurBrassart Thank you so much! Great video!
Legend! thank you just what I needed to do, and didn't know it was possible. Thanks man
Glad I could help!
Thank you for the fantastic tutorial! Would this work if you want to use the same computer to back up multiple phones using different external hard drives?
Great tutorial, clear and concise but most of all it works.
Glad to hear 😎😇✅
Very good tutorial but one question do you have a video on how to revert everything back ? although i dont think i would
Hi, thanks for your comment :) To unlink folders you have 2 choices: Open the Terminal utility and enter a line in the following format: rm /symlink location.
Thank you! This was such a simple and a clear explanation of the whole backup process. Appreciate it.
You're welcome!
Thanks for your comment Charles! I am glad I helped you to free some space on your Mac. Subscribe! New videos are coming soon ;)
