The Russians did not go to the moon first - in fact, I don't think the Russians have bothered to put men on the moon at all, not once it was done by the Americans. Everything else, space-wise, the USSR did it first, no argument there, but the biggie was a successful manned moon landing, and once that was done, well, that's all she wrote . . . at least for a while.

I didn't say it was all that matters. It's just that once a manned moon landing was achieved the USSR pretty much lost interest in the moon as that was the main prize in the space race of the 60s. Nothing captured the collective human imagination quite like people walking on another world.
