Wonderful video and great suggestions! I love that you get right to the point without spoiling anything. I havent really read much since I was a child due to the struggle to find books that actually intrigue me now, but my interest is piqued by all of these! I look forward to watching more of your content. ♥️
Most of my Japanese horror intake has been through movies and video games. Probably the only stuff I’m familiar with in book form is, of course, Junji Ito. I’ve seen the movies of Confessions and Ring, but just haven’t gravitated towards the books yet.
Thanks segmenting the video, I hate when people don't do that lol. I'll try at least one of those, and check the other videos you have. Any recommendations for the horror/noir genre? Mostly on the noir side. Any culture or time period is cool, thanks to anyone who replies
Ring is a first book of a trilogy which takes it to a whole new level. I found ring was alright but I read the rest of it and found the series to be one of my favorites by the end. It does go on a more thriller tangent than horror.
I remember when i first read Uzumaki... It blew my mind with such unsettling and weird events. The storytelling and art are amazing! 🖤I would love to see you talk about the drifting classroom someday! It's not that refined in terms of art, but i love the story!
I loved this video. J horror is one of my favourites! I enjoyed reading confessions and the Ring. Can’t say I’m a big fan of Junji Ito, but I did like Gyo, Tomie, and Uzumaki. I think I’ll read the Graveyard Apartment soon. Thanks for the recommendation once again. There’s something about J horror that feels so different, unlike western horror. They use a lot of water, hair, and many cultural elements to build up the plot, characters and setting. Definitely very creepy. In case you’re planning to read more of J horror, I’d suggest you try Battle Royale or Another.
Ohhhh the best video must watch lol, I agree with you sometimes books dont quite work out for me too, but movies on the other hand has always scares me gooood!! 👿💀🙈 i end up thinking about it n watching my back scared 😱 I wonder if there is any audible suggestions you might have. If possible pretty please 🙏 ❤
Didn't you find some of it incredibly unbelievable? I understand that sometimes you have to put your skepticism aside and just go with it, but there were parts of the book where I just said "come on ,man".
I am listening to Confessions right now and I'm really not enjoying it. It is one of the rare books I went into not knowing what it was about but I don't like to read about things happening to kids or kids doing dark and disturbing things. So, it's going to be a DNF for me. I haven't read many Japanese or Asian horror books but I've seen every movie that was released here in America. I honestly believe Asian horror movies are the absolute best. But if I watched the movie I won't go back and read the book. It'll be ruined for me. But I'll have to check out some of the others you mentioned here.
The Japanese movie version of The Ring was so creepy. Very few horror movies give me the creeps, and this was one of them. I'll see if I can find Uzumaki. O/T: I'm house and dog-sitting for a friend this week. She has Amazon Prime on her tv so I've been binge-watching The Expanse. It's so good. I like how the writers have changed many things in the book and altered characters in the show (e.g. Ashford, Drummer). It's like an alternate version of The Expanse, one in which you know the main plot, but the details and subplots are different enough to catch you off guard and surprise you.
@@TheShadesofOrange I'd seen up to Season 3 too, but rewatched the first ones again. I finished the other seasons yesterday. There was a major diversion from the books that caught me by surprise. I fast-forwarded through Season 3 of Stranger Things (didn't think it was any good), Reacher, and The Boys. My reading is going too well though. Have been on Hex for three days now (too much tv watching while I have a tv---the homeowner returns Sunday so need to finish up the last two seasons of Supernatural before she gets back).
I've been trying to get my hands on Ibitsu for a while now, it sounds so interesting! I'm a huge fan of Japanese horror (I've read all but 2 of these recommendations haha).
I used to collect Japanese anime years ago and some of them were pretty dark. And as always, they were based on comics or books that were not available here in the states. So, after watching your video, I see there may more books making it over here and am going to start looking for them. I have "Uzumaki", but haven't read it yet. "In the Miso Soup", I ordered and waiting for my copy. Thank you for the recommendations on the others. Just more to add to my "TBR" pile!!! 😂
I love good horror, but it's hard to come by. I am not a fan of manga (sorry everyone), but I am fascinated by what little I know of Japanese traditions and beliefs in the supernatural/evil spirits/other odd bad stuff. The stories are from an entirely different perspective, and that's what makes it fun. (I love Head Full of Ghosts, which has a super surprise twist at the end.) I'll probably start off with The Graveyard Apartment, followed shortly after by Confessions. I'll let you know how I make out. Thank you for this; I am really looking forward to diving in! p.s. I just stumbled on to this video after having watched a totally unrelated one. Lucky shot!
I have never read any manga before and I really want to try it. I just wish it wasn't so expensive! I really want to try out The Apartment one but I haven't heard too many good things about it
Hi! ✌😊. I'm not familiarized with japanese literature, except for the parasite eve novel, and of course, i read a lot of manga. It's good to see some recommendations, i don't know how much it differs from the things i already see on Junji Ito's or Kazuo Umezu works (wich i really love) but i surely will look for it. Nice video! Have a nice day!"✌😊
I acctualy haven't read so much horror books as I did horror manga. I also watched my faire share of movies. My go to genre from Japanese authors are thrillers and crime novels.
I've read "Confessions", it is absolutely amazing. I am currently reading Uzumaki by Junji Ito, really, it is such a worth-it purchase. The illustrations are very detailed and creepy. Those who have their doubts about whether they'll enjoy a manga or not, JUST READ IT. You'll definitely enjoy this one. The Graveyard Apartment was a new find for me through this video, thank you ShadesofOrange for recommending it !!
So... I've finished _Confessions_ and Junji Ito's _Fragments of Horror_. I found the former to be really different, which is great. Dark and almost uncomfortable. And speaking of uncomfortable, holy cow, what is with _Fragments of Horror_? These are extremely odd, often gruesome stories. I applaud the originality of thinking, but I'm going to give Ito a rest for awhile... yikes! Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to continue to explore your choices!
🇯🇵 📕👍Hi Rachel Out : Author Natsuo Kirino considerd a crime novel I found this book creepy! Going to check out Confessions. I did read Graveyard Apartment a while back but I do remember lots about the book In the miso Soup Has been on my to read list for years thank you for reminding me . I must say I’ve seen so so many Japanese horror films years ago there was a series which showed horror films from Asia if I recall it was on the Sundance channel some of the most incredibly freaky movies!
I thought you were going to mention 1Q84... but it's not really horror, right? Still, very good list. Gonna look for these. Thank you for the great recommendations.
If it wasn't for you i probably never heard most of these books, thank you for bringing up unique content! 🤗💙
Oh thank you!

Well if you're reading Junji Ito you are basically starting with the best

Thanks for the rec. I definitely want to try Battle Royale. And yes I'd agree that there is something different about J Horror
Junji Ito!! One of my absolute favorites 😍 great video, very interesting recommendations!
Thanks! I love his work
In the Miso Soup sounds good. Great recs, great video!
I hope you enjoy it... yeah it's intense
I really enjoyed Confessions, such a crazy story. I’ve been wanting to read In The miso Soup for a while-need to get to it.
Oh Miso is .... intense
Definitely adding IN THE MISO SOUP to my TBR!!!! Thank You for another brilliant video 💀
It's mess up! Be warned!
Uzumaki is freakishly phenomenal. I'm reading his collection Smashed right now
Hard agree!

I did a recommendations video for Horror audiobooks if that helps... ua-cam.com/video/ZYEkk30VeFg/v-deo.html
You may want to try "Revenge" by Yoko Ogawa. 11 Interconnected short stories.
Thanks for the rec
@@TheShadesofOrange your welcome, you've given us a bunch. Happy 🐣
Confessions is one of my favorite revenge books!
It's definitely a memorable one!

Yeah I was lucky that my library had a copy
The last one, "Ibitsu/いびつ" (meaning "twisted/not the right shape"), is pronounced as in "inch."
Good to know
Thank you for this! I've been wanting to get into Japanese horror, but I tend to prefer reading horror.
Happy to help!
