UC Ag Experts Talk: Monitoring Western Grapeleaf Skeletonizer in Wine Grape Vineyards

Dr. Carmen Gispert discussed the biology, damage, and signs of infestation of Western grapeleaf skeletonizer. She discussed a pilot project to validate a flight sensor trap which was used to monitor the Western grapeleaf skeletonizer in wine grape vineyards. The flight sensor trap uses artificial intelligence, is wireless and has a unique sensor with a learning algorithm that recognizes the pest, and once detected, delivers alerts as text to a smart phone application or a web dashboard. Dr. Gispert discussed flight sensor traps as a promising alternative of sticky traps to monitor insects and quantify insects in real time data. The presentation also touched on control methods such as natural enemies and organic treatments.
