  • In May 2022 songwriter rock n roll poet singer songwriter Michael Ubaldini went to Frederick Maryland to vist his friend of 2 years legendary 78 record collector Joe Bussard-they had
Been friends for 2 years talking once a week on the phone about old time music of Blues ,Gospel ,Country,
Jug Bands, folksongs ,Early Jazz and more .Michael being a song collector knew about Joe for years and finally tracked him down for Joe to record some Gospel songs from Joe's massive 78 collection onto tapes. They hit it off and a great friendship evolved over the love of the music. When the lock downs ended Joe kept telling Michael -"ya’ gotta come out here down to the basement we'll play these records loud and go see what kind of trouble we can get into maybe hit a casino" -
Michael made it to Fredrick a goal in his life to visit his buddy Joe was fulfilled as they hung out, hit diners and listened to great records -Joe told him all the great history then recorded two of Michaels original songs on his 78 record cutter w/one mic live. The last he ever recorded down in the Basement he told Michael a week before he Joe passed away -only two copies Michael has one and with Joes collection on an unmarked lathe test pressing they did where it belongs.
It could be considered The lost songs that could have found a home on Joe's Cigar box
release on Dust to Digital -
Here is a short document of that meeting ,recording ,conversations, old records and kindred spirits from two different eras ."Joe was one of the greatest people I've ever known.when I find an old 78 I wanna call him like always and ask him about it then remember I cant.I recently in 2023 Came across a 78 from The Prarie Ramblers in an antique store for 5 bucks when my phone with a mind of its own came on and Joes pic popped up.Coincidence?
No way ..it was Joe saying "better get that, its one hot record ,My Gawd wait til ya hear it!"
Anyone watching share this -the world needs to know about Joe a pioneer of collecting before people collected records no one wanted and a preserver of American music history that would have been lost without him.

I spent many hours in that basement since about 1980 or so. Many friends went with me and I bought records from Joe and his friend Gene Riffle. Many trips to the Barbara Fritchie , Joe took me once to his parents house because they had a large organ in their living room. I played for them that day. I had talked with Joe shortly before he passed, we were going to get together but he sounded so weak and cov*d was still around so we decided to wait. Well, that get together never happened. A great guy, opinionated as all hell but usually right. I miss him.

It had been several months since I did a Google search of Joe's name and on this date, 2/13/2023, I discovered he passed away in September 2022. A true gem to preserving incredible music. His passion for such great music cannot be surpassed.

I met him briefly a few years ago, outside of the old Barbra Fritchie Resturant. Never got to see his collection, even though i live in Frederick! R.I.P. Joe!
