    I like the electrification idea better. Discourage return visitors. Still not as good as shooting them though. May seem a bit harsh to some but you got a right to protect your livelihood and property from thieves.

    Kevin Bower, it is a sad reflection on the world we live in that so many think they have the right to steal from others rather than earn a living in a decent way.
    It’s a sad reflection on van manufacturers that any tradesmen has to spend even more money on making them secure.

    • @popuptoaster

      Manufacturers cant do much, as soon as all vans have a particular security measure it becomes worthwhile working out how to defeat it, your better off buying a cheaper van with no security at all then using the extra money to get a specialist to sort it out. The criminal then doesn't know what he's dealing with and anything that slows him down is likely to make him move on.
      If you make all the doors thief proof you watch them just cut the skin out to get inside, you wont stop them getting in, all you can do is make it easier for them to bugger off and rob someone else's van, sad but true.

    My van has 4 deadlocks (top and bottom of side + rear doors), a Hykee lock on the drivers door, a Thatcham Cat 1 alarm system plus an additional second alarm system with PIR's on the load area doors and motion sensors in the back. All of the signwriting has come off, too. What a sad reflection it is, that I have to spend over £1k just trying to prevent some scumbag from stealing my ability to support my wife and kids, and put food on the table.

    I know it ain't always possible but my approach has changed in recent years.
    I now have an ear-bursting sound bomb in the back (you can't get in without ear defenders), along with a strobe light and very, very tough storage chests and I leave the back door 'OPEN'.
    If they disable the sciren and get through the tool chests then at least they haven't caused four figures worth of damage to my truck in the process.
    Been hit twice since and touch wood they have looked at the task facing them and have fooked off, with no loss and no damage... fingers crossed for the future.
    I know you can't always put everything in a tool chest but you can put some of the high value stuff in there as least, (it's power tools they really seem to want).
    I'd rather just kill the scum... but apparently their lives are worth something so we're not allowed to do that!

    Hi @what knot I just want to say excellent video, really good idea, it's a shame most people in the comments are too simple to take this idea and put their own twist on it that makes it suitable for their specific needs.
    This is great for people leasing vans or just don't want to commit to dead locks etc.. lots of people in different circumstances, some in high rise flats, taking tools out every night etc not really ideal and if anything it tells the thief exactly what is in the van.
    Personally I would use ratchet straps for this, and park the rear doors up against a wall.
    Obviously even a dead lock at the top don't stop them twisting the other side.
    This tricks would go down nice with dead locks.
    Once again thanks for sharing

    • @RgW00D
      @RgW00D 6 років тому

      This video looks more like an advertisement than an informational video. And what you are sharing is more difficult than another technique. Most comments say use a deadbolt. Which is not necessarily an easy solution.
      Think about what the process would be if you had ropes (cut to size?) with the loops already made. Attach rope to one hook. attach rope to other hook. run the rope through the only hole. then chinch down and tie a simple knot... and the best part. Taking it apart.... one step, pull on rope...

    • @StevenDaniels1
      @StevenDaniels1  6 років тому +20

      Grant Pantling As long as you’re doing something it doesn’t matter what.
      Some people will have seen this and are now using deadbolts, deadlocks, rope and tie knots, chains, ratchet straps, anything at all.
      If they hadn’t seen this video they might still be doing nothing.
      I could have done nothing but I decided to put a video together to try and help, showing an easy way.
      If it’s helped a few I’ve done my job.
      Thanks for your input.
      The more comments it gets, the more see it.

      bernie129locksmith The videos 3 minutes long. Not 30. The point in holding it in tight is they can’t get fingers down the gap.
      Being a lock smith I can see that locks would be a solution for you. I’d agree with you.
      But there are many solutions and many vans with nothing at all.
      This can be done for free if you Tie Knots.
      I’ve seen dreadlocks drilled around or cut with a grinder ignoring them altogether.
      The thing is to use as many ways as possible.
      They take 6 seconds to tie and untie.

  • @hairychris71

    What a brilliant idea..!
    I get home from work, at 8pm, in the pouring rain - unload all my tools and equipment at the roadside, climb in and tie the door shut and then load whatever is left, back in the van...
    Sure, this method will prevent anyone yanking the top of the door out, but the cost of repairing the door (which would be covered by my insurance anyway) would be less than the cost of replacing my tools if they were stolen (not covered by my insurance).
    Deadlocks are the only way to go - even they aren't perfect (there have been cases of thieves using a nibbler to just cut the steelwork), but they are enough to deter the majority of opportunist thieves.
    Criminals aren't known for their work ethic - they don't want to work too hard. If you make the effort to improve the physical security on your van, they'll generally move on to one of the hundreds of other vans in your area, where the owners haven't bothered.

    • @StevenDaniels1
      @StevenDaniels1  6 років тому +2

      Chris Surname
      You fully explain very well how criminals have a lousy work ethic.
      Which is the point of making it more difficult for them to get fingers or anything else behind the door.
      Not quite sure why you would have to move unload all the tools if you have a backdoor to get in and out of.
      Deadlocks, padlocks, Rope, Chain, ratchet straps. Use any of them.
      But use them is the point.
      Have a good one.

    • @hairychris71
      @hairychris71 6 років тому

      What Knot - I run a mobile locksmiths business. I have thousands of pounds worth of tools and stock in the back of my van, including boards for boarding up broken windows, a ladder and stepladder, boxes full of locks, window and door hinges, etc.
      If I carried less stuff around on a day to day basis, I could easily climb in the back doors to use your method of tying the side door shut, but then - if I carried less around with me, I would be able to get a smaller van, so this probably wouldn't be an issue...
      I often get called out (after the event) to tradesmen who's vans have been broken into, so I would suggest that I probably get to see the inside of more tradesman's vans than you do and most of them, are usually pretty much full up...

    • @StevenDaniels1
      @StevenDaniels1  6 років тому +2

      You might do. You never know. I’ve seen plenty over the last 40 years since I left school and went straight into the building industry.
      Done a lot more since then.
      But it’s not a competition, I’m trying to show a very simple cheap way for those that may do nothing.
      I’m sure you’d sooner sell them locks.
      As I said in my reasoning anything is better than nothing.
      Have a good one.

    i stick to using one side door which has two extra external locks on and then on the other side door and rear doors i just riveted some hasp and staple locks top and bottom with padlocks on them....know it works because on a previous van they had tried to bend the doors but they hardly budged, couldn't even get a gap to try and saw through the locks......also having driven vans for over 30 years i am still disgusted how little care and attention manufacturers give to security, considering how much they cost. Someone needs to take them all to task and have them explain why they are all so easy to break into

      John boy C used to love that program. “Goodnight John boy”
      Seriously though John the video is 3 minutes long. How that gets to an hour, I have no idea.
      Many at present spend an hour after their day at work unloading and carrying in their tools to store in their homes. Then another hour each morning loading them back up again.
      If this slows the thieves down or stops them. Then it’s 3 minutes well spent.
      In my humble opinion.
      I’ve had break ins happen to me in my office and Home 4 times. It’s not a nice feeling.

      @@jaydee2559 the 12v (battery style) fence charger have both leads from the battery attached to the input of the fence charger. From the fence charger output the positive goes to isolated fence and negative goes to ground. It this case the positive goes to the chassis of the vehicle because it's all metal and it's isolated from ground by the rubber tires. The negative has to be attached to ground. Anyone touching the vehicle will get zapped. I believe current will go through painted surfaces, just a matter of experimenting. I don't know if the fence charger will affect the vehicle' electrical/electronic system or not.
