I'm contemplating on buying one used for $229 and this is the comment that gave me inspiration... you're welcome to come to my page and check out my mixes I did with my Pioneer DDJ sx2
Thanks for the review. Just to add that since build 4204 (2018-03-23) the Roland DJ-202 is fully supported and works perfect with VirtualDJ 8. It is nice to have options!.
One thing I don’t love about the 202 is that when you turn the filter counterclockwise (low pass) and use the echo effect in Serato, you get pretty serious distortion.
I got lucky and just picked this up with the full serato licence.. Limited edition. That being said coming from Virtual DJ and no issues I'm having lots of pops and clicks with serato. Try out the latency settings and it's still happening.. might have to try and work the 202 with Virtual DJ
Great post. I'm looking to start DJ'ing as a hobby with a controller, but like the feel of vinyl, and the ability to scratch. This was the only video I saw that actually used the platters for scratching. With that, I'm sold! Thnx again.
My left deck play button stops working along with left deck waveform and touching deck to manipulate left track. Updated to latest controller firmware etc. Even reinstalled windows 10....I discovered a note on the Roland specs page a word about this device being usb2 friendly.....well bad luck for me, every single port on my laptop is USB 3! Any advice please. The controller is a brick if I can't use left deck
at 8:08 im glad you added about the level having to do it twice to get the third decks' control. The Newmark is the same way and its annoying! Then with no loop feature (not key pad) might as well go with the DDJ 400 (it does NOT have a deck swap option sad to say) or just spend the extra money and get a 4 deck controller if you're going to upgrade at some point anyway.
For the price its amazing, the only thing that could improve it is if the platters didnt drift so you could put a marker on them an it would stay in the same place but the platters feel great and accurate. Also the cross fader is excellent, nice sharp cut in but if it was a tad sharper like the innofader it would be perfect.
202 probs ...Your computer downloads the Windows® 10 driver for DJ-202 automatically from the Internet when DJ-202 is connected to the computer. To use this driver, you must set the USB Driver of the DJ-202 to ":VENDOR." ??? any ideas
Dear Jamie & Crossfader. Just got a second hand 202 and yes it is an advance technology wise from the DDj SB but I'm really disappointed from the first thing I've found...only four pads for hot keys. Am I missing something or is my 202 not working right, hence why someone has sold it?!?!?! I could have sworn at least once when I've done something (unknown) it's allowed me eight pads for hot cues but when I'm trying to find out what it was I've pressed I can't figure it out. Any advice & help would be greatly appreciated. Hope ya well take care thanks for the uploads.
Also disappointed in the 202 that the trim buttons don't trim the tracks so it's saved for other times. It doesn't effect the 'track gain adjust' in serato at all. I was really hoping that I was getting a controller that was really removing having to touch the laptop as much. What price range am I looking at for a controller which removes me as much as possible from having to use the keyboard. I thought by the time I upgraded to this range there would almost be a button or slider for everything on the serato home screen.
what about the headphones volume wise as I have seen that is a weakness in some other controller brands in the market? thanks for the very informative work!
Sebastian Blanco It hurts my ears at max volume in cue mode with my Pioneer hdx10s. Now I’m not DJing in a loud club where you need lots of volume for cueing. But in my room in regular mode I play it about 75% and it’s plenty loud for me. 100% volume in non cue would start to give me a headache after probably 5 minutes.
any pioneer HDJ should work as long as they have a 3.5mm jack. There is no 1/4" headphone out on the mixer but 3.5mm will do. I'm content with Pioneer Steez on this thing for good sound in the house. I'm sure any of the HDJS will sound great home or on the road. They look lovely. Let me know how they work out for ya.
these do not have 2 channel stereo inputs on the back right? It would be nice if you could use this as a mixer if you ever wanted to plug actual decks into it
will this thing work with Traktor? I've checked their website and see no mention of Traktor at all? And being that I own the full version of traktor it kind of makes a big difference.
is the cross fader about the same as the RB/RR or is it a little better in the cut. ? thanks. i could use a nice small serato controller for the park or Starbucks lol
No because... 1. You need to pay extra to get the maximum quality of the roland DJ-202 but the Pioneer DD-J RB, rekordbox is completely free with it. 2. It has mostly the same specs with the Pioneer DDJ-RB if not exactly the same. 3. Pioneer DDJ-RB has been loved and recommended for beginner DJ's for a long time. I am just a beginner DJ and still learning how to DJ but I have knowledge about which controller to choose, thanks to Crossfader. But it's just my opinion it all comes down to personal preference. But for me I prefer Pioneer DDJ-RB.
Oh and an extra note if you think the sequencer is worth it then go for it! But if you don't think you need it right now you can just go to the Pioneer DDJ-RB :)
i have a question. I used the FX channels on top and tried to listen to them, but when i applied them, there was no sound heard in the headphones. I did not have Master output connected, I was listening to how the audio from the cue sounds. Is this a problem, or are FX only heard in the master output. Also, does this have anything to do with Serato DJ Pro. Do you need to purchase that to listen to them?
Try taking it out of cue and turn cue knob to the right so you can hear what is playing. You should be able to hear the effects then. My Reloop Mixon4 does the same thing. For whatever reason you can’t hear the effects in cue. I don’t know why
I bought this one. The sequencer is little tuff to learn but it’ll get there. I’m having issue with FX they freeze my serato. I contacted Roland and did software upgrade to unit, and played with Latency and still seems to happen. Now I’m pass my return date so I’m stuck with it. Any info would be great. I’m using a Mac
Unfortunately I’m unsure I’ll be able to help if you’ve already contacted Roland. I would speak with them again as they’ll know better than us. It sounds like it could be more to do with your version of Serato. Is it definitely the latest? Maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling it.
Lewis I didn’t buy it in the end, I managed to get my hands on some pioneer cdj 800mk2s for same price as these controllers, I was drawn to the Roland because it has the drum machines and the bigger jog wheels but I guess record box is the way to go, I might get a controller at some point though just as a cheap way to start using record box and cheat mixing 😂
Darin Satar Learn the software then upgrade the hardware. If you do hardware first you got all the knobs and pads but too few fx from free version software to utilize it to its full potential.
Currently, own a Traktor s2 mk3. What I like about it is that it comes with a full copy of Native Instruments DJ software, Traktor Pro. The controller is super solid in terms of build quality and features but Traktor Pro as a software is very lacking right now, so I wouldn't invest in the S2 MK3 at this time. Maybe half a year down the line the software will catch up to Serato and Virtual DJ.
I almost decided to go for ddj SB3, but just "discovered" this roland 202 and I`m very atracted of its beat making feature. Now, I`m thinking how "usable" this beatmaking feature is?! Can I use it to make a kind of a "remix" from a song, and record it in the end? And..it has a bigger library of beats from Serato, or just the ones that you showed in this amazing review? (another question, if i go for this controller, any of your paid courses will be useful for me? coz you dont have any course series for this specific controller)
Hey, the sequencer/drum machine is great and has an abundance of settings, which can start to become quite overwhelming to start with. You would definitely have to spend some time getting used to all the combinations of pads to access the different settings. But it can be done! To record your set's you would need to get the Serato DJ Pro software but you could sure do a basic remix of a song. I wouldn’t know, I started out with serato dj pro. If you can’t record it with lite my advice would be, buy a free screen recording app and use the audio from that.
Both are great controllers but also very similar. I’d edge towards the Roland 202 if you’re already or thinking about producing as well. The in build drum machine is fun to play with and adds that extra element. The SB3 has the pad scratch mode that introduces you to the world of scratching. Other than that the pads of feel of the two are pretty identical.
serato intro suck big time!!! the unit 202 for a beginner might work. I did not like the controller and I bought it as a backup!! Returned it in hours...
I apologise for all the moaning, one more thing. The mic input I can't get to record. Is it the 202 that's letting me down again or is it me not doing something correct or missing some button press select. Promise that's the last moan for tonight 😃😃😃
