I have said it myself, a simple shrug of Ale’s shoulders is enough to elicit a roar from the crowd. This song and video touched me deeply. My mother and her side of the family spoke Spanish. After she passed away three years ago Spanish is no longer heard in the house. Martirio made me realize just how much we lost since she passed away. I love this song and I love The Warning.

There is an anecdote about this presentation that the Villarreal sisters talked about in an interview on the radio. On the second day, Ale, at the end of the song, she could no longer hear Pau singing, so she turned to see her and Pau was crying. Pau says that this song gives her a deep feeling.

Pau cries at the drop of a hat... and I love her for that. It doesn't denote "weakness"; it denotes _empathy_ ... which is a very *good* thing. She _feels_ a song - whether it's one she wrote or not - and that makes her a well-rounded human. Can't ask for anything more than that, really.

The lyrics literally say to embrace it, it’s your choice and destiny, and it is said with irony, which becomes apparent at the last line, which says “it is your destiny, you martyr fool, say goodbye”. Total poetry. A shame only Spanish speakers can truly experienced it 100%.

And Pau's voice cracks towards the end of Revenant. All it does is make what they do even more beautiful. Backing tracks are all them anyway. And not just musically. The screams and psychotic laugh is all them. I heard the chain sound in Kool Aid Kids was actually their mom's bracelet on a counter or something. Add another genre to the amazing The Warning repertoire... Industrial music. Their sound is so full, but they are a 3-piece... and they openly admit they sparingly use tracks where the three of them need some embellishment. At least they DON'T fake anything like whole prerecorded songs to which performers lip sync. That's where tracks annoy me!! That's FAKE and not worth the money they charge for fake presentation.

When I first heard the song and saw the official music video, I was blown away. That’s an arena-style anthem singalong they created. Though in typical understated fashion, they don’t overdo it.
And one other thing, if Pau ever keyed your car (smiling or otherwise), you’d not only have to forgive her, but you’d also have to love the new song she just wrote about you for whatever you did.

I didn’t need to understand the lyrics to enjoy the song.
The music is the language and that is universal.
You’re absolutely right that saying that is actually a compliment to DPA for creating such a beautiful masterpiece.
I was kinda afraid that looking up the lyrics would somehow diminish the majesty of the song but it didn’t.
This is a song that is equally viscerally experienced as much as it is intellectually experienced.

There was a video from some guy from Mexico that has an ultralight aircraft and he kept flying over the area where this was supposedly filmed. it was very remote, a couple hours drive into the desert northwest of Monterrey. After many trips to the area he eventually spotted that ring of rocks and sticks completely untouched after two years. I thought that was very cool, he landed the craft and walked in the circle they had left behind.

As the ladies are fond of saying, "the music _is_ the language." It's all about the music, and anyone can appreciate it on as many levels as they want to.
Incidentally, the way to pronounce the title/word is "Mar-teer-ee-oh". Think "Martyr" with an "ee-oh" on the end (in Spanish, this suffix denotes a "doing" action; in other words a person who "is" or in this context "plays" the martyr). Generally one kind of "slurs" the suffix together into it's own specific sound that is hard to describe, but if you do it "long form" people will understand you.
This song kind of punches me in the gut, because for many years I did just that... and it was stupid of me. And while this song is kind of "Fine; do what you're gonna do... and as long as that's your intention, friggin' _embrace_ it and accept that is the path you chose." It's perhaps a bit of passive-aggressive criticism of people who do this... but I wish I had heard it back in '87 when I was in the depths of playing that idiotic part. Might have given me the kick in the butt to break out of it back then, instead of waiting a couple more years before I decided on my own that I was being an idiot. 😋

  • @thsc9119
    @thsc9119 3 місяці тому +10

I'm pretty sure the pronunciation goes mahr-TEER-ee-oh.
This song is epic arena rock anthem material. It's not necessary to understand the words to feel the deep emotion it expresses. Dany's pronunciation of the Spanish lyrics is gorgeous. I never thought of Spanish as a beautiful language until I heard this song.

I will watch analysis vids sometimes, but they stop way too much when I just want to vibe along with reactors. I also tend to not watch reactors who analyze lyrics... I said it before, but lyrics are secondary or even tertiary for me. I'll sing along to songs i've known for 30+ years and still "La la la' to the lyric parts I don't know. lol

Even Nena from Psychology of Rock, someone whose opinion I can respect, is just presenting her opinion, and she misses some things. I fail to understand why so many reactors seem to think they're not doing their job unless they take a wild stab at breaking down the lyrics with clumsy guesswork. Do they think they're impressive? Do they think they know something the rest of us don't? Or maybe they're hoping for someone to straighten them out. It's a serious turnoff for me.

i have probably listened to this and everything else of theirs 1000 times and every single time i watch or listen to this live version i am blown away. especially when dany's vocals break/crack a little bit during her wail there at the end. it is incredible how great they sound LIVE, i dont recall another group ever catching my attention live like The Warning. I am a guy that does enjoy the lyrics but I will also add that this song is proof that we dont need to know/understand the lyrics to truly enjoy the music. ✌

    Ha-ha!
If I know the words… great.
If they have meaning… even greater.
… but I'm a lot like you. I love that the words sound good with the music as if it were a hand played instrument.
I think we work off of pleasing sounds & melodies?
I went through jr high & high school playing trombone. I could barely read music… but out of 22 or 21 other trombones… I was 1st chair because I could remember the song by ear.
    I know… I'm stupid.
It’s just the way it went down.

No that is more common than you think. I took 4 guitar lessons... HATED IT!!! taught myself by ear, to this day I do not know how to read music, but if I hear a riff, it takes a couple minutes and I figure it out.

I remember watching MTV the day it launched. It's difficult to explain to those who didn't live before that day what a revolution MTV was in entertainment so I completely understand your sentiments. With regard to Martirio, it is a songwriting masterpiece. There is an early version you can find on a fan cam video of them playing Martirio. I think it may be in Argentina. It's an early version, with a different arrangement, but you could tell that it would eventually be on an LP and become the anthem that it is. Oh, and. you can tell now just how proud DPA are of it when they play it.

Another great reaction and I agree about lyrics in rock music don’t really matter too much because at the end of the day if s song is good it’s good!! I’m sure that I got most lyrics wrong on the songs I grew up on but I doesn’t change how I feel about them. The day I have to look up lyrics to decide if I like a song is the day I’m hanging up my headphones 😅👍🏼

A great example.. Blinded By The Light... it wasn't until my 20's that I learned they actually said "Revved Up Like Deuce" I always sang "Wrapped Up Like A Douche" hahaha and I am not joking... I always thought what does that have to do with anything...but never cared enough to check out the words.

It's not about "accepting your fate" - in fact it's the opposite. It's about taking control of your fate, and shedding the victimhood mindset that is holding you down. You're your own worse enemy and no one is coming to "save" you.
The line "Drown in your martyrdom, it’s your destiny, hand yourself over." is mocking someone who has been "suffocating themselves with their own hands".
I get you don't care about lyrics, this is just my attempt to clarify the meaning for others, as this interpretation is everywhere. Although I admit I'm not a Spanish speaker and am relying on translations. But a few of these lines are too obvious.

    • @victorycast

Cool, see that is what I mean about lyrics. What I parroted came right from a page sighting what The warning meant, and now you say the opposite. I don't want to work that hard to "GET IT" but then again, I'm lazy when it comes to words and math.

  • @BrentTharp
    @BrentTharp 3 місяці тому +3

This is near the top of my list of Warning songs. I'm quite into lyrics, but how a song makes me feel matters more than the lyrics. And THIS SONG is hauntingly beautiful. It gives me chills every time I hear it. It's the one song live where I think Dany takes off all the breakers. It's too bad they don't show crowd video during this song, because I've seen people cry when they play it, and they probably did here as well.

Near the end of the song Pau yells “CUIDAD DE MÉXICO” saluting the México City, where this took place.
The more I listen to this song, the more I get out of it and I don’t mean lyrically, just musically!
Lyrically it’s a masterpiece, but they put so much feeling, character, sentiment, power and emotion into this song. It’s know as their ANTHEM and for good reason. If you listen only to Ale’s bass, it’s beautiful, Pau’s drums are like a heartbeat with perfect rhythm while Dany delivers perfect leads, grinding rhythms and dynamic vocals.
It’s truly difficult to understand how these three young sisters manage to put so much into what they do.

Up there with Animosity and Kool Aid Kids as some of their best lyrics imo, despite the fact that my only encounter with Spanish up here in the frozen wastelands of Canada is on the Taco Bell menu.
Basically, it's a derisive warning to self-proclaimed victims - who "choke themselves with their own hands" - and who expect the world to stop and to help them. Only you can save yourself. Pick yourself up off the ground, or lie there and die alone, you foolish 'martyr'.
Really recommend a read through of the translation. Strong lyrics, and like Kool Aid Kids, very relevant in today's world.

Sometimes the most obvious things are the hardest to see
You suffocated yourself with your own hands
When everything indicates that someone is finally coming to save you
      You find yourself abandoned again
      Drown in your martyrdom
It’s your destiny, hand yourself over
You try to find an explanation in the depth of your being
And you fall again into the void
Finally you secretly realise the pain will stay
It’s your new life of martyrdom
And there’s no going back, you can’t escape the fire that’s at your feet
And in the darkness you’ll get lost
      Drown in your martyrdom
It’s your destiny, hand yourself over
Sometimes the most obvious things are the hardest to see
      Drown in your martyrdom
It’s your destiny, hand yourself over
      Learn from those who suffered
If you have to live in fear
It’s better to die in the hands of a goodbye
Your sad life, foolish martyr say goodbye

It was windy AF that day out in the desert and 45 Degrees C (113 Degrees F). They were out there all day and into the night. The tent was supposed to protect them and their instruments from the blowing grit, dust, and sand, but the sheets were shredded early on presenting a hazard that they had to dodge while playing (especially Pau). The grit evended up in their clothes and under garments. Also there were wasps they had to avoid.

I have always loved this song. It is still right up there with my favourite The Warning songs. It has such an epic, anthemic sound. The musicianship (as always) is spectacular. The vocals are next level - Dany's wail at the end of this song gives me all the shivers. So emotional. The video is just gorgeous - so beautifully shot. You can see Pau getting emotional during the live version, she says she almost always cries during this song when they play it live. I can see why, it really hits me every time. When you are in the crowd, and everyone is singing along with the "Ohhh ohhh ohhh" part at the end it is just amazing - this song really needs to be experienced live! Thanks for the great double-reaction & keep the great TW content coming.

Rob, I and many of us non-Spanish speaking fans LOVE this anthem. Dany's cry always gets me and then her second even higher cry absolutely blows me away. The one lyric I love and have used professionally is "the most obvious things are sometimes the hardest to see" or something like that. I have seen and heard translations of Martirio but that line is the only one that stuck with me. Of my top 15 five songs by The Warning this one of them!!
