ThankYou for the interesting documentary. Brings back good memories, born at home in a mine house 9 Drinkwater st. in Orkney Untill 1974 when i left home at 17 to start an apprenticeship in Vanderbijlpark. ...
Typical mine town. The camp site is very nice. Drone did his job. Thank you for that. Small town but still alive. Thank you for taking us there. Nice footage. Waiting for the next one to hop on board
I came back to Orkney, where my roots are. I was born here in 1959. Left 1986 and came back after 30 years. Definitely not the same place of my childhood, but still a big part of my memories.
Hi guys the scotsman who named Orkney must have been home sick because you couldn't find to more different places. Mining is king .the lovely fish Eagle caravan park on the banks of the Vaal River brought back so many memories for me .the marquee tent was huge it must have been festival. The drone showed how big it is and how it can have four churches the mine village memories of my time in South Africa. The oppenhimer stadium had a eerie feeling and the disaster hands over the place it also seems out of place very strange. Shame about the station. The history was interesting also the name of the streets (Sonia mentioned Chaucer the views from my house are up to the pilgrims way witch features in Canterbury tales by Chaucer) .I drove to Mining towns like Orkney they always had a similar vibe with the same houses. Enjoyed this video as it brought memories I had forgotten. The drive home with the beautiful snow covered mountains you could have been in Switzerland. Thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one

The mines, originally called Vaal Reefs gold mining company, belonged to Anglo American until about 1998 when it was taken over by Anglogold Ashanti. Some of the mines were being sold to other companies over a period, of which Harmony was part of, until Anglogold Ashanti withdrew from SA.
I grew up in Orkney and stayed there from 1981 till 2005. I attented primary school at Laerskool Noorvaal from gr1 to Std1 and Orkney Laerskool from Std2 till Std5 and High school at Hoërskool Orkney. That first mine (7 Shaft) used to be Vaal Reefs 7# then African Rainbow Minerals, Harmony and various smaller mining companies. I obtained my qualification at that shaft. 11 Shafts in the area plus a few in Stilfontein area. Alot of them not functioning anymore. It is so sad to see the state of the town as it was once a beautiful little town. Oppenheimer stadium was where all the local schools held their annual inter school athletics. You guys drove past my childhood home in Chaucer street. I remember the station, when it was still there, as this is where we used to pick my dad up after returning from attending military camps. I've been following you guys from Rustenburg as this is where I am staying and to see Klerksdorp and surrounding areas just makes me so sad to see how it has gone backwards. Hopefully things can get better.
Lovely tour of the north western province Curtis , Sonia, Dusty, and Sandy. Loved the pic of the two bears with the rising sun behind them on your final morning on your way home. I'm so glad you got to see the Visarend caravan park.
The stadium was once a grand place hosting all sport events and school home sports of the area, including Klerksdorp. It was called the Oppenheimer stadium. I was shocked to see how this place looks now. There were also a huge indoor arena close by.
Hey the dam is lovely and the train bridge. No comment about that mine. The caravan park is a gem of a find Loved the drone footage got a good idea about the size of the town. Pity that stadium just lying there not in use❤🎉❤ I honestly dont remember that stampede
We were absolutely blown away by that stadium, which was very clearly state-of-the-art back in the day when it was built. There's a very sombre vibe surrounding the place, but we found it very interesting at the same time. 🚙⚽️
So sorry you guys got sick. What a bummer but that's some crazy milage you did Thank you so much for an awesome NW trip. I thoroughly enjoyed every episode and learnt so much again. Dankie dankie dankie🧡💜🧡
So heart broken to see James Motlatsi Stadium in such a dilapidated state, to think that this was a place to where we'd take primary and secondary school sports trips 😢 it truly is saddening. The area next to the stadium was an indoor sports facility where we played volleyball and basketball 💔
I would not go driving around old mines. If it's operational, security might have you problems. If it's closed down, the Zama-zamas are a bigger problem.
At the mine shaft where you saw what looked like smoke comming out is actually very poisonous gas coming from underground one shaft is usually used to pump fresh air underground sor workers while the one you saw is a ventilation shaft where the fowl air iand blasting fumes are sucked out from undergrond
We're vigilant, but acutely aware of the positives that remain. There are negatives in EVERY single place on this planet, not only our beautiful country! 🇿🇦
Thanks for showing us all the positives, we need to see it to stay positive, I really enjoyed your travels especially the great history of South Africa
Orkney " Die dorp van goud, maar die enigste goud is in die laat dag middag son "🌞 As mining towns go , not too pretty.⛏ A shame about the stadium. I bet Harry Oppenheimer did not miss the money he spent on building it. I hope you both get over your cold and breathe in that fresh Strand sea breeze. It will clear the nostrils and the sinuses ! Looking forward to travelling with you on the next trip. PS Those lemons that Sonia ate at Sun City did not keep the cold at bay🍋. 😄Rather try a nice hot curry. 🥵 washed down by a cold Lager. The Kwiddie went well as usual.🚗 How many K's did you do on this trip ?
I mentioned the total km's at the end of the video. You'll have to watch till the end, I can't remember now. 🚙🤣 Over 4000 for sure. We're luckily all better. 😎
@@DustBugsTravel Wow 4000 !! That's a fair few K's. You mentioned at the end of the video how many km's back to Strand from Orkney. Pleased to hear you are both well again and ready for the next adventure.
@@WayneKitching I have fond memories of the Boet Erasmus Stadium in PE. I used to live in Uitenhage and Despatch in the 1970's and attended Muir College Boys High.. Go EP !!! 👍🏉
Orkney is in the North West province. We're well aware of that as the description and thumbnail of our video clearly indicate. We happened to drive past an old Free State sign on the road towards the Free State and mentioned it because it appeared to be an original sign. 🛣 Orkney is a town and not a farm, we know that too. 😁
Orkney snork nie. I am a huge fan. Did you find where the Van Tonders stayed? Tiemiestraat? Oh dear, so many of those actors are now passed away. Makes😮 me feel so old! So sorry you guys had to get sick. But you did amazingly well. If I have a cold, it's snork hoes en knor if I try to speak! In New Zealand there are no petroljoggies, you put in petrol yourself and go pay inside
Nope, we didn't look for the house. We couldn't even remember the name of the street, to he honest. 😁🏡 We lived in the US for a few years and there it's also self-service at gas stations. ⛽
@@annawitter5161 Hi Anna. I live in Klerksdorp (i also grew up in Randburg and Durbanville in my childhood years). I found the Orkney Snork Nie house on the web, and drove past there a few months ago. The address is 6 Sheridan Road, Orkney...its near the golf course. Worth a drive by if you live in the region. Otherwise go to Google Maps Streetview and enter said address. 😊
In the Orkney graveyard, there is a mass grave in memory of the 104 workers that died simultaneously in a mine cage accident at no.2 shaft in 1995.
Thank you kindly - Orkney Snork nie - was very interesting Curtis and Sonia!
In Orkney gebore in 1962.

Hoe kan mense so leef ?
