Cleaning the EGR diffuser tube and MAF sensor every 6 months will keep you from getting the dreaded electronic throttle control code (doing this will also clear it). But your plastic intake swirl valves are coked up too. Look for signs of coolant in the EGR diffuser tube when you clear it so you can nip it in the bud.
Deleted my EGR cooler at 102,000 miles, diffuser tube was still clean, BUT I had it tuned by GDE at 5,000 miles. Now out of warrantee, will delete everything. I also run a CFT catch can. Oil still looks clean at 10,000 mile changes. K&N oil filters and NAOA gold fuel filters.

I love my 16' ecodiesel, got it new & put in a GDE at 500 mi. No problems at all, currently at 63k mi. & get 30mpg at 50mph. Avg. 22-23 mpg overall. Highly recommend combining it with a GDE tune.
I've owned my 15 ecodiesel since new, 10,000 miles first SCR replaced. 25,000 miles 2nd SCR replaced. 40,000 miles had the factory recall reprogramming done. 42,000 miles crankshaft sensor delaminated left me 100 miles from nowhere. 64,000 miles engine exploded in a ball of antifreeze, oil, and fire. FCA installed new engine and all new exhaust system. Now at 101,000 miles, Got wrong DEF code pop up 1 day after adding Super Tech DEF fluid from walmart in an emergency. Drained tank and cleaned DEF injector. I guess if we are all dumb enough to own these pieces of shit, we are gonna have to spend the time doing all these extra cleanings to keep them going. Just FYI, all above repairs were done under warranty, i guess this is why FCA sent us all that $3,600.00 check after the recalls, to pay us our time forr all this extra crap.
I bought my 2018 Ram ED used with 9,000 miles. Dealer gave me lifetime warranty on drivetrain. Only catch is I can’t do a delete or I void the warranty. Truck has 72,000 now not any problems yet. Before mods was getting 28mpg on a 4x4. Level and AT tires dropped me to 23/24mpg.
Most people who buy Ram ecodiesel trucks don't have problems with them. If you install a tune like the EPA compliant Green Diesel Engineering Hot Tune/Trans Tune you will have a very good running ecodiesel. The EPA complaint Hot Tune reduces soot by 75% over stock. The key is do not let a diesel idle heck don't even let a gas engine idle for that matter.
I bought my 2015 Ram Ecodiesel it had 22 miles on it, now it has 158,000 miles on it. The only work I have needed done was when the magnet on the crankshaft delaminated. I got a lower end rebuild courtesy of FCA.
Just cleaned the sensor I guess I really need to clean the tube also. Well back out to the shop I go. Hell start to finish it's a thirty minute job and took half a can of carb cleaner
I have a '16 Ram 1500 Quadcab 4wd Ecodiesel 3.92 axle ratio with 158k miles. I checked the tube at about 90k. Not that dirty. Cleaned with Brakekleen. I usually do not idle much. Run mostly highway miles. Mix Hot Shots Secret additives in the fuel. Wanted to add a water/methanol injection system. I used the STP "XL" filter for the oil. And the Wix fuel filter. I like the pleated style, rather than the factory plain style filter. I am currently upgrading my front suspension. Previously had replaced the upper control arms with Readylift products. Liked the improved steering feel. Bought the Mevotech medium upgrade part for the lower control arms. Have the Bilstein 5100 shocks on the front, for a 3" lift. Have a 1.5" lift on the rear. I will make the rear about 3" lift too. Have 33" tires. We have a 2018 Ram 2500 Crewcab 4wd 6.7L Cummins with 3.42 ratio, that my wife drives. That truck is a beast. Not as smooth as the Ecodiesel on snow and ice. Needs a 3.73 ratio. The Ecodiesel and the ZF 8-speed, with 4.10 ratio would be great in the 2500.
So if you delete at low miles, I assume you void the warranty, but if you don't delete, you end up abusing your engine with all this gunk That's the dilemma.
I've had some issues like turbo vanes under pressure and what not. A diesel mech, told me to take the fuel level to 1/8th - 1/4th a tank and put a bottle of Cat a clean in it, then run my egnine as hot as I can till i fill up again, it has honeslty helped a few times and now I do it 4 times a year. I'm having a ton of issues with the DEF system and codes though. Just cleaned the Def tank with distilled water, next I'm planning on steam cleaning the def injector and the SCR where it hooks up. If that doesn't fix my issues I'm in for a large bill at the dealer.
Mine is 2017 with 23k miles on it. Just started the shutter after letting it sit long enough for carbon to harden. Dealer can't replicate 3 dropoffs later. Even tho ram has bulletin for 14-16 models to remove and clean heads because of poor valve seal.

One person here mentioned buying additives to add into the fuel tank, will that make an improvement or the other member who posted that comment about putting the little strainer at the end of the tube just before installing it?
It is very easy to do. Not sure the science as some soot will fall into the intake more... best bet would be to check every year or two? A clogged plastic intake is not the best either..
And for around 1800 USD this is no longer a problem... these EGRs and DPF systems are killing diesels of all shapes and sizes. Soot build up leads to Carbon build up leads to clogged oil channels leads to bigger issues.
Should have some sort of egr filter to clean out every 30k miles or at ever oil change this is bull and ruins engines! Plastic manifold and pressure tubes is also garbage!

Same problem with mine. Was told it would cost around 9 grand to fix. Or 6500 to delete it. Don’t have the money to fix it so it’s just been sitting. Wouldn’t they fix it with that recall in place for the egr?
It does not cost anywhere near that. Someone wanted to seriously rip you off. My suggestion, is to buy a delete kit for the DPF, DEF, and EGR. Then watch videos on how to delete it. Overall it should be under $1000 for all parts.

This engine has more problems than I wish to know. Spinning all 4 main bearings is a common problem. All you need to do is not change the oil. Mechanically it's a bitch to work on. Everything is tightly packaged and overcomplicated. Expensive, too.

If I'm looking at buying a used EcoDiesel, one has 50,000 miles and has had the original GDE tune since 900 miles. The other has 70,000 miles and ran stock. My issue is that the 70,000 mile one has more of the upgraded features I want and is better looking but I'd be worried that even if I installed the new GDE tune after buying, there would have already been enough carbon buildup in intake to cause future problems. Do you think it would be fine or should I go with the one that's had the original tune from the beginning?
Personal preference, both tuned and un tuned have had issues to my knowledge. Warranty should be with stock with extended warranty. I am deleted now so no extended warranty..
Hello, you could certainly try but that would more than likely dirty your oil. You would want to change oil afterwards. I have no knowledge on that so it's a risk maybe. I've thought about taking off the intake and cleaning it. Easier I believe to just purchase an new one.. Thanks!
A catch can is a solution in search of a non existent problem, the catch can is very deceptive because all engines are designed (for decades now) to pull the vapor from the positive crankcase ventilation valve and burn the vapors in the combustion, what these catch cans do is they over time pull the oil out of the vapor and makes it look like you are burning pure oil which is not the case. If a catch can was really needed and beneficial the manufactures would have installed them.

Those vapors you say that are just vapors carry oil at the molecular level. Over time the catch can gets full of oil. I've owned and currently drive only 5.9L pre egr/dpf Dodge Cummins powered trucks since 1992. They all have catch cans which us Cummins owners call puke bottles. It wasn't until the Obama era EPA regulations that they forced that puke back into the engine to burn again. This oil has already changed its state molecularly and is now no good for anything mechanical and is being forced on you to reconsume, regurgitate and repeat. Delete it all, dpf, egr and whatever else. Blue def is a joke and eats away at metals which is what all your engine parts are made of.
Yes, the high combustion pressure forces a certain amount of combustion product past the rings. Mixed with the previous cycles egr supplied soot it dirties the oil up immediately. I have a 2016 ECO with 86K miles. Just got a OBD P0299. Cleaned the tube, the MAP and the MAF sensor. Seems to have solved the problem. Extra oil filtration and a GED tune is in my immediate future.

You do have to let it idle a bit to cool down oil temps if your towing with it

Water/meth injection would clean up the intake and valves while you drive and get the egr deleted. That little diesel will last for a long time.

I put a screen in mine and clean it every oil change. I'm at 155k and intake from what I can see look's clean

You never need to clean the egr pipe if you delete your egr the first day the truck leaves the dealership.
