Forgotten Medicine: Pine Resin, Making a Pine Resin Salve
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 гру 2023
- In this video, I go over a medicine that has slowly become relegated to the days of yesterday. What was once so common, almost every household knew about it and made it. Now, the information is slowly falling into obscurity. Hopefully, this video, can help us remember or at least not forget, the importance of this abundant resource.
Just remember, not all evergreen sap is the same. While pines are generally considered safe, cedars are actually mildly toxic and can flare up asthma issues if inhaled. In this video, I used a southern yellow pine resin, also known as loblolly pine, which is very common in the southeast.

To save a step, next time put the raw resin inside the layers of gauze/cheese cloth and secured the top with a wire - add that directly to most of your oil and heat. The resin will melt into the oil, the bark will stay in the cheesecloth and no need to filter it. 👍🏻
Great idea
Wouldn't that only save one dish? Not really a step? Especially if you tie it around it, it's just a different step? Right? If not tying or securing it could just come out... If you do tie it, it's still at least the same number of steps. All I see is you don't have to wash a strainer
Yes, and put parchment paper on bottom of pot, to save the pot. Made my life so much easier!
Finnish pharmacies sell both pine resin salvas and pine resin "nail polish" to care wound and compat fungal infection. They sell it, because there are medical studies that show that they are effective ways to battle wound infection and fungus.
There has been more than a few instances where I've developed some form of skin fungal issue because of my hot and humid climate. This stuff works so well it has reversed all of them I've used it on
But why buy it when you could instead buy cheesecloth, a cheap strainer, tins, beeswax, oil, and then spend the better part of a day making it?
I absolutely love the smell of pine.
Just made a bunch of pine resin salve. A tree right near my house had enourmous amounts of resin leaking from it.
Excellent.
You can also use a folded dishtowel inside your pan of boiling water when water bathing your resin in glass jars.
My dad would put turpentine on our dog’s hot spots and it worked. I forgot about it till now.
See!! Perfect example of forgotten medicine. I think it was one of those things that was just so common, it wasn't passed down and taught as it was just expected
Thank you very much. You're the first person ive seen to recommend this great, abundant resource. Will do this. Very helpful video, straight to the point. Thanks again and God bless you.
Very helpful video and straightforward instructions. Will do this. Just subscribed. Thank you and God bless you 👑✝️🕊️
Just made this. Remind me to wear gloves next time lol my hands had the sticky touch. Everything i touched became sticky. Made a huge mess everywhere and threw away the strainer. Thanks for the ratio!
Lol I know that pain. I made a pine pitch torch a few years ago without gloves and I felt like chevy chase in Christmas vacation when his hands kept sticking to the pages of his magazine
Rubbing alcohol or funny enough peanut butter can get pine resin off your hands.
out standing ... one of the best video ive seen in a long time thanks bruv.
Thank you!
7:17 use a hand towel. You can ring it out and dry it. Simplicity is key to life, no foil, no silicone just a good old cotton wash cloth on the bottom my friend.
So simple.
Hope you show how to make tinture as well. Great video, looks easy, hardestart finding sap.
Amazing tutorial! Thanks ao much. Blessings from Idaho ❣️
Thank you for this great video! My grandpa kept pine tar salve around; and was never shy about using it. Especially for my brother and me. lol
It's really some good stuff. I use this stuff all the time
from the scared old trees that was for sap harvest the v angle was close to 90degrees. and they had a series of Vs half dozen to a dozen marks. the sap ran down the v to the point were it was collected. your mark on the tree was not angled enough for it to run down the v but it ran over it.
You are correct. I've learned my lesson
I like the title...Forgotton Medicine...it sounds like a series type name
Definitely should be. Herbal and folk medicines have all seemingly been forgotten. I brought this one up because the older folks remember when you mention it but half didn't even realize it's not around anymore. Like when they changed root beer
I have a small collection of products from my childhood "medicine cabinet". Two are pine oil produced in NC: Astyptodyne in Wilmington and Apinol from Greensboro. I just tried to get an idea of how old the bottles are and was pleasantly surprised to learn that they're both being produced by two sisters-in-law.
I want to learn more about local medicinals this year...this is an awesome video. when I hear Pine resin I always think FIRE..this is great info..
Thank you! First thing I always think of is pine pitch glue. Then fat wood fires. But I've been using this stuff on my hand and it's working great. Wife is insisting I use it on my heels next.
You totally need to jump into the medicinal realm not just because of your background but because you can grow and harvest specifics and can learn quickly when things are at their best. It takes a certain type of eye to see this stuff and you got it
Good informational video Anthony , thanks for sharing YAH bless brother !
Thanks Michael!
Thank you so much for this wonderful information! 🙏❤
Great video. I love and and get why you have the disclaimer at the end. I want to make a salve for myself. It's very natural, and earth friendly. Thank you.
Thank you so much. This is one of my favorite salves. It really does wonders for skin issues
That we have some here, besides poplar scrub, let’s go
Probably got alot of spruce and fir too
Another great one, thanks Anthony, you've been putting out some banger content
Thank you my friend. Fall and early winter are my super busy months trying to get as much non growing food done as I can before it gets miserably cold and I gotta focus back on the garden for spring planting. Always nice freshening up skills I haven't done in a while or trying new processes to see if they work
Pine products are not out of favor by chance. Chemical companies play a very big roll in displacing products that are more wholesome, like pine, with their lab made dangerous chemical ingredients that serve the purpose but are cheap to make and bring a better profit. Maybe good business for them but it's hard on us as living things that want to remain healthy.
Honestly I was skeptical prior to making this at how well it would actually work. After using it, I can't go back. It works so well you would think it's prescription strength stuff
Ty😊❤very informative and quite easy to remember
😊great. Thanks for sharing 😊
Would also like to hear more about the pine needle tea!
Very staightfoward process. Take new pine needles right off a fresh branch and make a tea with hot water. Very good source of vitamin C and great for ridding congestion
@@PalmettoPreparedwhat do you think about storage of pine needles? Any ideas? In the spring many people around here started pine „honey“ by mixing new pine needles with sugar for the wintertime.
Merry Christmas to you and your little family Anthony
Merry Christmas Lori jean!
Thanks for the information.
Sure thing. Thanks for checkin it out
What oil did you use to mix with the pine resin?
:Edit nevermind you specified the type of oil at the end of the video
Good information
Thanks Gil
Nice, thanks! I have a pine tree that needs taking down so this is a good use other than just turning it into firewood.
Just spent da last two hrs collecting pine sap for the first time it was really fun 😊✌🏾
I purposely make cuts in my trees just to be able to harvest the sap semi annually
Thank you so much great info.....
Thank you so much for watching!
George Brett...was just using pine tar to heal his bat.......lol
I love pine trees !!.......
I don't have an arm like you, i gotta put anything on it I can find!
Great video and shout out. Get metal slivers all the time doing commercial steel studs
I've become a master at pulling splinters with my non dominant hand
@@PalmettoPrepared lol. Nice. It’s usually my non-dominant hand that gets the splinters from holding the screws with a magnetic tip.
Good stuff!!!
I appreciate it. Hope it helps somebody
Great, Amazing information. Too bad I don't have pine trees around my area.
I appreciate it. Really? My great grandfather lived in simpson and his house was surrounded by pines. Of course the last time I was there was probably 1998
We have oaks, cedars and a lot of pecan trees.
I would love to buy one!
Thank You!!!
Thank you
Ty. Shared with my 200+ Facebook. I'm a senior. Could I buy one of those pine salves here? I can't make it with my bad Arthritis. Ty for all your fantastic videos!
Thank you so much. Unfortunately I haven't scaled up enough to sell any quite yet. Trying to get to that point
Well done Palmetto.
Pines are a great resource 🏴☠️🇺🇲🏴☠️
Thank you! My hand appreciates it. Figured I'd share the process
@PalmettoPrepared my hands on the back Crack really bad.
I wish I had those Whispering Pines here
@maccabeus-everydaysurvival5828 any pine works. I'm so used to seeing pines 5 million times a day, it's hard to imagine people in places that don't have them
Excellent
9:12 Those little bark pieces shouldn’t be discarded because they make great for starters and are good for other uses. This was such an interesting video, tysm for sharing it!
They were just discarded from the salve. I kept it for torch purposes. Thank you so much
I am a habitual hand wash, also been working on pretty filthy stuff in the last years
Likewise. Always working on nasty cars from engine work to disgusting peoples interior work, washing my hands is a compulsory action now
Hi I have four questions, please.
1. is pine resin the same as pine tar?
2. is pine resin the same as turpentine?
3. is the resin from any pine tree good, or it must be a specific pine tree? - in fact, extending my question, is any resin from any tree also good?
4. what are the healing properties of this balm? what is it good for?
Thank you very much for this video, loved it!
Thank you and sure thing, let me see if I can help
1) no resin is just a better name for raw sap. Pine tar is made from heating the resin out of the wood. I have also done a video on this process.
2) turpentine is made from distilling resin much like how one would distill ethanol or spirits from fermented grain.
3) generally all pines are considered safe. Some are better for resin than others. Yellow and white pine are the best.
4) Great for the skin. Stops microbial growth and when combined with a great carrier oil like jujube or olive, helps heal the skin. Personally I've used this on minor skin issues like windburn, minor burns, rashes, insect bites, and even helped stopped itching from when had poison ivy on my forearm.
@@PalmettoPrepared Amazing! Thank you very much. I will watch your other videos.
One of my oil breakdown pine sap etc
It can be used for wounds , torch, candy and glue i think
I fell on some steps a month ago and injured the muscle on the outside of my right shin it's still hurting and has a lump. What is something natural I can take or make like a poultice or salve?
Thank you so much! Canci use coconut oil?
Amazing video such great content. Today on Father’s Day me my kids and wife collected over 10 gallons of pine sap. As weee getting ready we are gathering are list together. What kind of oil are you using
Holy cow that's alot of sap. In this batch I used olive oil. But I'll use Jojoba oil too as it absorbs better
Very good tutorial too. You explain things very well.
Thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing this! Are there certain kinds of pine trees to use or is it just any pine tree?
Most pines are just fine to use. The real slow growing ones in the desert would be too tough to try though. Regular white, yellow, long leaf and short leaf work best
Bad ass video, we’ve been collecting pine resin just because it helps start fires really well.
Thank man. That it does. Extremely flammable and very good for the skin
Fantastic information. Question though, what type of oil did you us?
Thank you! This batch I used olive oil. Slower to absorb into the skin but much cleaner than other oils
@@PalmettoPrepared thank you very much. I have access to pine sap, it’s so awesome
Can you tap pine trees for sap the way you would maple or birch?
It's thicker. Cutting a v notch is how the old school turpentine makers did it
people worry about cutting down trees but you never hear any sort of uproar when hundreds of thousands of acres of trees go up in smoke because of no logging and thinning of trees. people need to get their awareness and priorities in order. nice vid.
Where do i get market fory Oil. I have small scale processing plant ..Pine oil Resin.
Great video! I wonder, does spruce sap have the same propertys as pine? Q2: Could one use pine tar instead of sap for the salve?
Generally yes, spruce resin can be used like pines however, don't use cedars.
Yes pine tar can also be used as it's great for the skin as well
Oh no. Wait. Don't use cedar? Why? Shoot. That's what I gathered.
Yes I've learned but you knew this was coming. (Every Day Outdoors) whaaat😆😆😆
Lol I'm not even going to pretend I get the reference
Hahahaha 🏴☠️🇺🇲🏴☠️Everyday...Survival...but that's the way it is for us outdoor dogs.Indoor dogs are wimps
@maccabeus-everydaysurvival5828 bahahaha I shot this intro so many times I didn't even notice i jacked it up until now
@@PalmettoPrepared what I'd tell ya Macc baaaahhh 😄😄😄

Good video.
Do you have Buckleys Cold Medicine down there?
Thank you. And I've never heard of it so perhaps not
@@PalmettoPrepared It is made from sap and God knows what. It taste awful! if you were sick as a kid your mom would offer you a spoonful and if you took it you got to stay home from school. I didn't miss much school. lol
ua-cam.com/video/wEDTiP1wanE/v-deo.html
Does it matter what kind of oil you use? Thanks for sharing!
You definitely want to stick to the healthy kinds that your skin can absorb without any ill effects. Olive oil has been used for skin health for thousands of years so it's a safe bet. Jojoba oil and almond oil are also really good alternatives
@@PalmettoPrepared ok, makes sense. Thank You!
I am wanting to make that salve. Are those tins special tins? Can the pine sap be from any pine tree or does it primarily have to be from a spruce if that matters?
You can buy the tins of Amazon. I've also used half pint Mason jars. I use pine primarily. You can use other conifers but just research before you do as some can be toxic. Pine is not toxic
I need some for my feet!!!!
I works so well on my feet
Thanks for the info. Just asking how much time will this prep last ?
A few years. I've still got oregano salve left that I made almost 4 years ago and it doesn't smell rancid at all
Can it be used on dogs for yeast infections? Ty
That's a very good question. I don't see why not but I always stay away from definite answers unless I've done something first hand
what is the difference between pitch, resin and sap?
Chopsticks? Just cant break free from the Asia Expedition I see
I didn't mind sacrificing a set of chopsticks over my 2 pronged forks
@@PalmettoPreparedhe who wounds trees and walks to Asia.....
Does it have to be pine needle specifically? Or can it be different species of pine? Idk my trees as well as I should... Let's say there's ones that make pine needles... Then there's like a Christmas tree type deal that produces small needles.. then I have one in my yard that doesn't exactly produce needles. Idk how to explain it. Definitely has to sound stupid. Can someone tell me if I'm stupid or not? LMAO 🤣
Could the beeswax be replaced with coconut oil?
No. You need the beeswax to solidify it. Since coconut oil only solidifies under 76°, it would only work in cold climates and you could never put it in your pocket
Hi! What kind of oil did you use ?
Oh, olive, n3ver mind 😅
If we have a healthy pine tree, can we carefully chip off resin.
You can cut a V notch in a healthy tree and it will gladly give you tons of resin without actually harming the tree
Can you use mineral oil?
Just wondering about the lid after the oil, is this to encourage infusion?
Basically to keep heat in to avoid rapid temperature swings
@@PalmettoPrepared thanks! We made our first batch yesterday, and it was amazing! Thanks so much for the awesome advice! 🌲❤️
I need contact to sell my final product.
What kind of carrier oil are you using?
Olive oil for this one as I had run out of jojoba oil I planned to use
turpentine soap and cream please
I have to build a still first
Can one make smelling oil from this resin???
That is a very good question
😇😎😇
First
Second😂
"I combined half the beginning......" ???? Beginning...what? Can you just write down the recipe (ALL the measurements), and clarify each step after that? I have pinon pin sap. Its clean. I have the olive oil and the beeswax beads, too. Would really appreciate it.
This recipe as I made it is
100g of pine resin
300g of olive oil
I lost 15g of weight in bark so the total weight of resin and olive oil combined was 385g.
Used 65g of beeswax.
The only reason I split it up was because my container size was only so big. If you start with a big enough container in the double boiler, you won't have to split it
@@PalmettoPrepared THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I have a question. How do you tell pine tree varieties apart? I have a huge pine tree in my yard and whenever I look up what kind it is none of the trees online come close to its size and shape.
The needles, your location, and bark are the best ways. Long leaf and short leaf are easy to tell because of the length of the needles. Loblolly is easy to tell because of the wood color and needles as well.
@@PalmettoPrepared 😆 I feel stupid but what? I have a pine tree that 4 feet in diameter and 3 stories tall. I live in Michigan 3 miles off Lake Michigan in 6A
