Be careful with the out front mounts on integrated bar/stems. This unit is large, and heavy, and if you go ahead and add a GoPro or headlight for riding in the evenings, you’ll want to check the user manual on the bars to verify that the bar is rated for the combined weight, or you risk ripping the threaded fittings out of the bar when hitting rough terrain or potholes. I run an Edge 1040, and when I add up the weights vs what my bars are rated for, I’m within 20g of the limit, so this thing would be a no go. Also, considering the weight is further out, it’s going to have even more leverage and reduce the rated weight by some amount.
One thing to consider is with a light or gopro underneath is a gopro-finger extension piece that moves the weight backwards towards the stem so there's far less leverage acting on the mount.
Even though the AERO data is very nice it´s way too big and heavy. I´ll keep waiting for a faster, lighter and battery durable new Roam. Thank you for the video!
I'm sure the Roam v3 will get some of these updates, the touchscreen and new menu layout and a long battery run time would be nice, that's all I really need right now
@@davidarthur It needs a bigger CPU. The V2 struggles with reassessing courses along with a sizeable latency gathering on-the-fly data. And, so annoying having it restarting the resume several times when standing at traffic lights or just stopping.
Sorry you haven’t been well - hope you are fully recovered!! Enjoyed the discussion about the wind sensor - I’m sure you could use it to optimise drafting in the short term. DC Rainmaker also has some good points on battery life and missing features, but I enjoyed both your review and his - good to get different perspectives! Thank you!
Thanks and yes fully recovered. The wind speed sensor is interesting remains to be seen how useful long term it really is, but definitely potential to optimise position and positioning
I really think this is the best way to sell more roams and bolts. I do not understand at whom this is targeted. The aero sensor is a cool gimmick but is irrelevant for training particularly if you use a power meter. Enthusiasts and even more so competitive cyclists already mostly chose the bolt over the roam for weight reasons. On the other hand, if you are not weight obsessed and only want navigation features, you could just use your phone. I am a wahoo fan and if the ace was more like the Garmin in the video dimension and weight wise it could have been interesting. Wahoo just went too far with the design for my taste.
Not true, it is good to hear different viewpoints. I will also be interested to hear GP Lama's view. The fact that he hasn't posted yet doesn't bode well as he often holds back when a unit isn't ready. He's been burnt by Shimano in the past.
Yes, I fear DC might have killed this baby in its crib, he was scathing. Wahoo need to do the necessary upgrades asap and not " some time next year" 😮😮..simply not good enough.
Thanks for the review! Just wondering, what computer mount did you show? I’m looking to replace my Canyon front light mount since the Ace won’t fit without scratching the handlebar/Ace.
I would like to have turn by turn navigation (it is useful when on unknown roads in a traffic where you cannot watch the map and we know that modern GPS devices can sometimes lead you the wrong way when they confuse the direction, a voice navigation might correct that). I am going to stay with my trusted Bolt 2 for a couple of years before I decide to upgrade to Garmin 1060 or Ace 2. (I am going to need a bigger screen size)
It seems like a couple rides in the mud, especially if you're following a group, will result in that unservicable air port getting completely clogged. You should give this a test on some mountain bike singletrack in the winter to see just how dirty it gets. Puzzling design decision to be honest, but I guess I understand why their marketing materials don't really push this feature much beyond mentioning that it exists.
Without testing that exact combo I'm not sure but provided there's adequate clearance to the handlebar it should be fine - that's a small issue with both the Ace and 1050, some integrated out front mounts barely allow the bigger computers to fit
The Aeroads both went back to Canyon a while ago so can't check that for you I'm afraid. The Edge 1050 did fit so I would hope the mount also has space for the Ace, but I do think there will be some bikes where it might not fit
I think its a bit too big and heavy in relative terms for the weight conscious riders out there. Seems to be of more use to the longer distance traveller rider that isn't trying to justify every last gramme on the bike. On a separate item was that the Fairlight you were riding towards the end of the vid? As always nice work and get well soon.
Tell me please, no one shows how many data fields fit on the map. Are there 6 fields available like ROAM? And if it also has 6 fields, is the map still useful - visible.
This is for those that do racing and especially TTs I think. Cause most people don´t really need all the functions on this. I ride for the fun of it, don´t really care how fast I am going or how much power I put out. I would love a computer with a screen this size. But i don´t need all the functions on it. I mostly want it to have a bigger screen for the maps. So wish they would make a budget version with the screen and the basic functions. Like how long of a ride you've done and maybe max. speed and average speed. But that´s all I need.
The only thing that's bigger than the price on these bike computers are the gigantic, empty black bezels. If a company made smartphones or tablets with bezels like this, they would go out of business.
As hyped as i was about a bigger screen with touch function the missing strava live segments and poor route profile (even though its on the box) its a no from me. A good unit thats not quite ready is how i see it and at that price point it really should be ready.
Those features and others are planned for firmware updates next year and other ones too so guess maybe wait until they’ve been added before taking a closer look? All the core functionality is in place though and works well in my experience so far, but agree shame all the features aren’t here. Guess they wanted to get it out for Christmas sales?
The core functionality, which I mainly tested, all worked fine during my couple of weeks with it. I must confess I don't use stuff like Strava segments but I do know Wahoo has more firmware updates planned over the coming months so I'll do an update in the new year and test out a few other features - any specifically you're interested in?
@ no thanks. I was more interested in the form factor. Sadly they’ve still made it clunky with large bottom bezel. I got rid of my Roam v2 for that reason. 1040 solar is found the job at the moment.
@@davidarthur, battery life was one of my biggest concerns. It sounds like the unit is not optimised yet. That being said, I stopped buying head units at release after being burnt by my Edge 1040, which frankly struggled with buggy software at release.
First impressions so I guess not a fully baked opinion. The size and heft of this thing astounds me. May as well put a desktop on your handlebars. Wahoo has miss read the market here I think.
Yes very much first impressions, I focused on the core functionality but there are features missing which Wahoo are adding next year, but arguably should be here now (depends how important those other features are to you, not everyone uses Strava Live Segments for example) - I'm guessing they wanted to get it out for Christmas...
I would agree, but wahoo should know that cyclists spend fortunes to save 40g on a wheel set or frame. I know that this does not matter for the average recreational cyclist but unless forced to do so no pro will every use this.
Was considering to switch from Garmin to Wahoo for the nicer display, small size and the awesome led lights - everything is gone in the new Ace, so definitely waiting for a Roam V3
This device no make any sense to be released. The people if having a aluminium wheel... needing buy a carbon wheel because aluminium is too heavy, but now with 200gr plus gps device is no problem ? Wahoo need to go sell this fish on another harbour 😅
When I see the lag as you navigate, my brain says "no". Sadly both Wahoo and garmin still suck - it's the price of an iPhone without the design or software. It's even heavier! Massive bezels, painfully slow, hardly any innovation… There's still space for someone to do something far better in this space.
If I want to know what the wind is like, I'll just look out the window or my weather apps. Why would you need a wind sensor? More nonsensical tech.......
DC Rainmaker not so impressed
I'm not surprised; it sounds like they have shipped an unfinished product. Not that Garmin wouldn't ever do that, LOL

Too big, might as well ride with my Mac book pro on my handlebars 😂😂😂😂
Garmin edge 1050 all the way baby!❤

as I am watching your video about the new bike computer, I am getting an email from Wahoo Fitness "the wait is over. Meet ELEMNT Ace" 😂
Same here!
This wind sensor is redundant. Wahoo tried to introduce something new, but they ended up with a heavy brick...
Great review. I have the Wahoo Element Roam v2.0. . Don't think I will go for this new Wahoo Element Ace. Will likely go for the Garmin 1050.
Everyone is getting their winter head cold so bad that the UA-cam guy is even sick. Get some rest and hydrate Dave!

Bought a bolt a couple days ago lol
Elmnt roam v2 user here. Cool gadget. Anyway to recalibrate aerospeed sensor as it get used.
Very happy so far with my Coros Dura.
The last time I heard about TFT screens was late 1990's laptop screens.
Wahoo just released a cell phone. That looks like an OG HTC
Love the flycatcher
Pro tip: Cover the wind sensor with your hand during cycling to get extremely aero... at least according to this gimmick feature
Looks nice, good review but still love my Bolt V2 and won’t be changing to this 😊 Pete 🚴🏻👍
The Bolt is so good. Only prefer the Roam as easier to see with my bad eyesight!
the only review that matters is DC Rainmaker
Totally agree
Glad you came onto my video and write a comment to tell me that ;)
What are you doing here then? 😂😅

Does it fit on the new super light mount from the new Scott Addict RC?
They can piss off with that price. Literally not far from 'good' smartphone prices.

what mount are you using?
Not sure why I wouldn’t just use my phone which I’m already carrying anyway
No mention about the bell?
Because it’s an other gimmick, just use your voice to signal and keep your hands ready on the brake levers if it is not enough
I have a K-Edge mount, which is basically Wahoo Bolt sized, can it be fitted or is it too long to fit?
Without testing that exact combo I'm not sure but provided there's adequate clearance to the handlebar it should be fine - that's a small issue with both the Ace and 1050, some integrated out front mounts barely allow the bigger computers to fit

I dont want a app and my phone on there.
It seems awfully big for a bike computer. Couldn’t they just update the roam with a touchscreen?
Can you download routes from Garmin Connect to a Wahoo Ace?
no

Nah~ pass~

Saving is probably a good option, as they'll have the software sorted by then.
