    Thanks for the video. Low water has been a thorn in my side since buying a new SQ two months ago. I bought a large capacity washer for a reason. Thanks for helping me get the Feds the hell out of my laundry room!

    Going to buy a Speed Queen tomorrow. Had a heck of a time finding a truly traditional washer. Don't know if the one I get will need this adjustment, but I am so glad you put this on UA-cam in case I do need to do it. Many, many thanks! .

    I just adjusted my new 542 to the original water level. It very easy to do, just takes some patience. So far so good on it. Thanks man for helping us out!!

    This procedure worked for me, but I never heard the "click" described at 2:08. All I did was turn the screw clock-wise a few turns enough to make the white plastic drum go in a little more. After about 3 test fill-ups, I'm now able to select "Extra Large" on the water level setting and have the SQ fill up right where I want it. This is at about 3/4 of an inch below the top edge of the wash bin.
    Thanks again for posting this video. It was very helpful and easy to follow.

    I love it. I was going through the videos and came across yours, I just started cracking up laughing because how you feel about getting your cloths clean is exactly how I have been feeling about my getting my cloths clean.It is amazing how when someone wants something bad enough they will find a way to do it. I was getting a five gallon water jug and refilling up my washing machine. Next thing the government will tell you how long you can take a shower to save water and have it set to turn off.

    I have a twenty something year old Montgomery Ward washer and this is just what I needed. Thank you so much. I now have a full tub without having to hold the valve over to reset...takes a lot of time to do that. Blessings.

    So far I have been well pleased with this washer. It washes like an old Maytag with the sloshing and rocking back and forth of the water. After having DD whirlpools and kenmores and a Maytag bravos x, this washer is a breath of fresh air. No wash action like an Osterizer blender. Just a soothing rhythmic sound like an old whirlpool or maytag. May you all have many years out of your machines.

    As a appliance repairman for over 40 years i can tell you do not do this because it is not necessary. if you think you need a little more water which most of the time you don't you just hold the reset until the water level reaches your desired level. plus changing this setting by adjusting this factory set screw can cause your washer to overflow under certain load conditions as i have seen happen more than once.

    Thank you! I just got a new speed queen and was so frustrated with the water level, I knew there had to be some sort of hack to make it fill properly, with 5 kids and a lot of laundry this just made my day!

    THANK YOU for including all the steps, i.e. how to open up the control console...
    Other vids start with the guts already open, and I was wondering how hard the SQ was to open compared with my old Kenmore that just has 2 screws in the front and then lift & tilt-back hinges.

    This machine meets the criteria for ownership as defined by ifixit.com If you can fix it, you truly own it! The Department of Energy can kiss my dirty socks and flush their stupid standards down the drain. Kudos to Speed Queen for "meeting" the standard but allowing the owner to "install" common sense!

    Thank you for posting this! Your instructions worked perfectly and we now have a full tub of water for our dirty laundry!!! I wish the EPA and all of Uncle Sam's regulatory agencies would exercise a little common sense! We now have to drill the insides out of our shower heads to get enough water to wash our hair, flush our toilets multiple times to get them clean, use more light fixtures because our light bulb wattage is severely limited, etc. etc. etc.

    Thanks for the tip. I posted two videos addressing this after doing some research and reading the wiring diagrams. I now have full flow on the hot water for a true 50/50 warm, and best of all I can now rinse at the same temperature I wash my clothes in which is what I've always wanted!

    Great video! The first two crews removed the decorative top plastic piece, and three more screws allowed the control panel to tilt forward. I turned the adjusting screw one clockwise (right) turn and filled the machine. The level came up about half way from the factory set level to the top of the stainless steel drum. I gave it 1/2 more turn and saw it was between the two top drain hole rows. Ran a load of clothes and the level switch shut of at the exact same level. Good to go!

    Thanks for the video. Just purchased a Speed Queen washer model AWN 432 this past week. One thing I noticed about the tub hole pattern on yours is that the very top row of holes has a staggered? Pattern. The one I have just has a single row of drain holes at the top. Anyway the water level in mine right out of the factory was a little higher than yours. I adjusted it and now it comes at just underneath the top row of holes.Thanks !

    That was another thing too.My concern was washing a comforter and any other heavy/bulky wash loads. Like many here, I don't need the government dictating to me about water usage.Generations grew up with these types of washers in the USA. If it isn't broke don't fix it!

  • @Bunkysworkshop
    @Bunkysworkshop 7 років тому

    Well I'll be damned. I was having to keep adjusting the fill level by keep holding the fill knob until it would fill up to the top. I made the adjustment just as you showed and now we are at the top. Full load size now. Thank you so much.

  • @lihubbards

    Great! My model was slightly different, but still had the screw in the switch area. Worked like a charm. I found a copy of the maintenance manual online, but it was missing 'Page 52' which of course was where the water level adjustment was supposed to be! Default of lower level makes no sense, as you have to do extra loads!

  • @brooke127

    Thank you for this hack vid-I might try it. Someone posted a link to this vid on the official Speed Queen Facebook page & the person handling the SQ FB page replied w/this:
    "For most of your loads, the Extra Large water level will cover your clothes. If you find that it does not, and you need more water - you simply turn the Load Size knob to RESET. While you are holding it on RESET, the water comes in until you let go, putting you in control of the water level. The procedure shown on youtube is not necessary."

    • @Bunkysworkshop
      @Bunkysworkshop 7 років тому +7

      brooke127 i understand what you're saying about holding the water level knob in the reset position till you are at the level needed. I only do full loads and holding the knob every time just doesn't do it for me. I made this adjustment and no more babysitting the washer for wash and then more water for rinse.

  • @alitak
    @alitak  11 років тому

    True, true, and all true! SQ is the last washer on the market built with the quality we used to get in our 1980's and prior appliances. A real transmission, a solid timer, etc. The balancing on these was what sold me. I can throw a brick in there and put it on the spin cycle and it will not bang the washer or walk the floor. The design on these is just second to none! No mold like you get on front loads either. Still the best deal out there and a good unit once modified back.

  • @patcherd67
    @patcherd67 11 років тому

    Apart from the little rant, this machine is the best washer i have owned since the mid 80s. Got the speed queen dryer last month and the build quality is very sturdy. Actually feels more solid than the 26 year old whirlpool it replaced, which was a good basic dryer

  • @Physics072
    @Physics072 12 років тому +1

    I just did the fix. I turned the screw 1 and 1/2 turns which brought the water level just under the top row of holes.
    I seem to have a front to back level issue. When water is in line with top holes in the front of the washer they are 1/2" below the same holes in the back. I can level it by push the drum around but it seems to reseat in that position. Does not see to affect it much though.
    How much water can be added before its TOO much? Past the top holes?

    Thanks for this ! My wife was so fed up with the performance of this new machine and this tweak really made a big improvement. If you have ANY ideas on how to get around
    the idiotic "internal lint filter" design they all seem to have moved to?
    We had SO MUCH BETTER performance from our old washer with the agitator mounted lint trap you could clean between each load.

    I bought the AWN432 mechanical controls a month ago and because of this video I was confident in being able to adjust my water level....thanks so much....my machine looks slightly different than yours when I removed the top parts but it is basically the same. I think I had to turn the little screw about one rotation only to get the Ex-large setting to fill to just above the top row of holes. I also defeated the operating mechanism by clamping the metal tab on the back based on another video I watched.

    • @alitak
      @alitak  8 років тому

      Glad that worked! The door defeat is a real dangerous one I do not recommend. Why would you do that when the door doesn't lock shut like it does on a front loader? I just don't see what is gained by that, I must be missing something...?

    just don't tell anyone ! and as alitak said if a repairman is that stupid find another repairman! i am a speedqueen dealer and i am doing what i have to do to make these machines work as they should. as far as i know they are very few washers that this can be done on . cheap whirlpool made ones can but it is not this simple and you loose some features. on the speed queen turn the screw 2 1/2 turns clockwise. any good repairman would look the other way if they noticed this modification

    Ta-daaahh! Success! Unplug. My new AWN432... has two flat head screws, take off metal piece, followed by three 1/4" hex screws, pulling control panel? forward. The adjust knob was small, more like 3/16" or 1/8". Using a crescent wrench seemed to work best. At first, pulling the timer knob started the water automatically (after plugging back in), but after more than one turn, I needed to push to the reset position before more water came out. One 360 degree turn equaled one level of holes higher, but start with less as your mileage may vary. Thank you alitak!

    Sir,
    A few of questions for you:
    1. Can the adjustment be made with the machine off? I only ask because another video shows the adjustment being made when the machine is on. I assuming this is done for convenience purposes (not plugging in/out to see new water level)
    2. Does the machine need to be filled with water at the extra large level when making the adjustment or is it sufficient to have the selector at the extra large level with the machine unplugged?
    3. Do you need to select reset after each screw turn?
    4. Are the other water levels affected (mini, small, medium)? That is since the extra large level is higher are the smaller levels bumped up?
    Thank you for your time and effort!!

    • @alitak
      @alitak  9 років тому

      You should adjust it with the power off, then plug it in once the adjustment is made, turn it to reset for the water level real quick and see where it stops once it's full on the highest water setting. Not sure on the other stuff you are asking

  • @tbe5740
    @tbe5740 8 років тому

    Thanks for showing how to adjust it... but I am very concerned about the extra gallons of water that you add, and the extra weight effect on the Belt(s)... I broke the outside knob which controls the water level, and I couldn't find that parts ID/reference to order a new one (it is a special knob different from the others on the Washer and Dryer... it has a metal wire inside)... My washer is the same : AWN432 SP111 TW01 , and I really appreciate it if you happen to know what that part SKU is... broke (cracked the knob housing) when it was forced beyond its stop. 9-20-2016

    nearly 3 months and my washer is barely broken in. This go green non sense is out of hand. If i want to use extra water, whose business is it but mine?

  • @alitak
    @alitak  12 років тому

    The water level adjustment is a work in motion, it's not x turns, but rather turn it until the water level is where it needs to be. This will take a few times of turning the screw, plugging it in and testing where it shuts off. I turned mine until it was full, then backed it off a half turn to be sure it didn't over-fill and just start dumping on the floor.

    Be aware, the extra weight of the water and the greater number of garments or large sized items will lessen the life of the motor over the life of the washer. Every action has a reaction.

    • @WildHorsesOfCourse
      @WildHorsesOfCourse 6 років тому +1

      Less water makes more load force on the drive components with a similar sized load though. The drive train of these machines was designed to work with a full load +full tub of water and will handle the extra water just fine. Having said that overloaded is still over loaded and that will wear out your drive components.

  • @Georgeevaappliance1
    @Georgeevaappliance1 11 років тому

    most repairmen would never notice & the ones that did would not care because they know that adjustment will not cause any other part to fail. the only trouble i ever see out of speed queens is every once in a while a timer will fail, but the timer is one of the few parts on the washer made in another country ! with that said they are still the best washer on the market today.

    I have a AWN 432.
    How many turns (Clockwise) did it take to get the water level right?

    Also why back it off at all if its set right? That part did not make sense to me. Could you clarify?

    I want to do that on my washer but our sewer line is iron and has poor drainage. The restricted drain on ours is actually a good thing, our last washer would flood the room but with this limited outflow it's perfect. I would definitely do that if we had good drainage!!

    Cont'd. I think you'll enjoy the irony in this: I had to replace my washer in part because the fill valves wouldn't shut off. I had to watch the machine so it wouldn't flood. Now I had to watch the machine to add water so it wouldn't tear up, tangle, and not get the clothes clean. That's why I sent back the GE "h e" (hell on earth) machine I got before the Speed Queen. NOW I've done my homework and the 432 machine is amazing. No electronics. No plastic outer tub. No plastic parts in the dri

    I noticed they all are 3.3 cu ft washtub, but they have different amounts of water, 20 gal, 24 gal and 31 gal. Does this mean they all can be safely changed to say 28? The motor size is all the 1/2 hp, so heavier amount of water, it will go out sooner, right?

Calling our Congressmen or voting them out won't help, because it's regulations, not laws, that are causing all of these problems.... I wish we could abolish the EPA. I did the same as you, but spin cycle centrifugally makes the water slosh up and crash against the underside of the boot, and as a result the sloshed water comes down to the floor. I suppose you need to strike a balance. My mother's 1960's Maytag kept the tub still for the first 30-sec of draining I would guess for this very reason.
    Anyone else having fill spout issues where the tub swings forward (especially during the rinse sprinkle) and the fill doesn't clear the tub but instead goes behind? Source of water on floor too?

    Anything can void your warranty. They may come out and say you overloaded it and broke it. Here is my personal experience with Speedqueen, when the water pump broke on it under warranty they direct shipped me a replacement that I replaced myself. The guy at Speedqueen specifically told me that I would not void the warranty replacing the part he was sending me. If a dishonest repairman said the warranty was void from water level adjustment I'd find a different, reputable repairman.

    Why do you have to take the header off? I just watched another SQ youtube video (by either Ted Walker or Rocking Dustpan) where, to add more water to the tub, you just twist one of the knobs (holding it in place until the water reaches the level you want). Does your model not have that?

      I don't want to have to do that every time, that's not a fix that's a one time/one cycle situation. Say you do that on the wash cycle, take a look at the rinse and it's right back at that half full point.

    Looking to purchase this washer. Do you know if we can adjust the water level on the electronic panel? or only the dial panel?

    • @tbyrd2046
      @tbyrd2046 9 років тому

      Connie Krandall I don't think electronics will make my clothes any cleaner.
      Do what you want but, I have heard a lot of people having big trouble with fancy electronics going out.. costing hundreds of dollars to fix. (Not necessarly Speed Queen brand). I went with the proven old school knobs and really like the washer. Closest to a machine you could have bought 20 years ago that would last 15 to 20 years. That's my hope.
      IDK about the adjustment with electronic contols..

      T BYRD I thought the same thing about the Speed Queen electronic machines, but these DON'T die out like all the other ones (GE, etc.)...they've had the electronic ones for quite awhile and...as with all Speed Queen's...they're solidly built. I would recommend these machines over ANY other brand! I LOVE MINE!!!

    That's interesting, never thought of using a slip for it. I saw a news story where a child had their arm ripped off putting their arm in one of these on spin cycle. Even if you don't have kids you may have some visit someday out of the blue. I've already found muddy shoe prints in my dryer so I have no confidence in defeating safety settings like that because I know it would be a matter of time in my house. ;-)

    btw, I don't sell or repair these. I'm handy and know how I want my stuff to work. I don't make recommendations on washers, cleaning, etc. The speedqueen is one of the last models to use the old school transmission and real components. The new ones are all direct drive fall apart crap. So far I'm pretty happy with the speedqueen reliability. I have renters that pack a lot of crap in these and don't take care of them. They still do a great job. This is the best self balancing top load.

      I just purchased mine Feb-2017. Everything stops (fill, etc.) when lid is raised. The schematic shows the lid switch is directly in-line with the mains power after the plug itself ... which would kill all electric. Fixed that with a wedge of cardboard to keep switch lever down. Instantly reversible.

    If you really want to be cool you should also get the world's best washing machine hoses from Flood Check and a Water Cop device to turn off the water if your washing machine or anything else tries to flood your place. My old washing machine got stuck on the fill cycle and caused over $20,000 in water damage!

  • @alitak

    @fttp211 If it's a speed queen just fix it with this method. It's a solid washing machine, I have two of them working great. This modification is really easy to do, just watch it for a couple fills to be sure you didn't over do the fill level. I have had zero problems with mine since adjusting this.

    they can't tell you to do it because if they did the government would shut them down ! they have to take that stance on the record, they are just trying to scare you into not doing it with the flood talk , once you get the level where it needs to be and you run a test load to check the level there is no way that will happen . hundreds of people have made this adjustment with no issue. not saying that you are wrong on the warranty facts if you follow the rules to the letter

  • @alitak
    @alitak  11 років тому

    I don't believe in having it wash with the lid open. I've heard of kids being killed by getting their arm stuck in there on a spin cycle. NOT WORTH IT! If someone is hurt or killed by that washer due to your modification you would likely be held legally responsible in civil court and subject to a huge loss. I truly hope you fix that before selling it someday. That is an easy hack but not one I would ever put out there in interest of child safety. :-)

    Yeah, it's hit or miss, there is no exact number of turns. I turned it until it was full, then backed it off a half turn to be sure it wouldn't ever spill over since it's a pressure tube, no precise science to the water fill, give or take a half inch with those things.

    Hi Shannon, I did this video, you can post on here if you want a reply. I don't work for speed queen, I am a consumer. I don't recommend any particular model, I only like these because they are top load and have old school steel transmissions. The new ones are direct drive and unreliable. I hate front loaders. I wash some nasty dog blankets, etc, and trust me 5 gallons of water or whatever they use will not clean off that garbage. It takes some volume to get that garbage out. The speed queens just work, mine only broke down when our 10 year old at the time got some socks between the drum and it got sucked into the water pump. Speed queen has TERRIBLE customer service. I was out of a washer for 3 weeks with 2 small kids laundry to handle. It was a nightmare. I hope they can resolve that, I love their product, hate their complete lack of service. Note, I live in a town with 150k people, you'd think they'd have some service people nearby but the wait was loooooong and they all wanted money to look at my brand new washer.

    oh my God all day today I was online trying to fine an awn432s to replace this shit whirlpool caprio that has balance issues with a bad suspension system. could have replaced the shocks for 60 dollars cost of parts only, who know how much labor would have been, however. I do not like the lock on the lid, I do not like how it wont clean clothes. I hate Caprio machine. Do not buy one. Excited to get my machine I ordered today from Amazon yes its high in cost but I am looking down the road to me not being agitated and its worth every dime...plus a 3 year warranty..yeah I know...but just hedging my bet with this one...I did have sticker shock. Thank you for telling me about the manual fill adjustment.

    Hurray for manual fill knobs! Hurray for manual everything! It lasts longer. I just hold the fill level indicator until it gets to where I need if I have a large load. Or, just fill the washer before adding the comforter. Damn good washing machine. My front loader was horrible and did not clean anything! Glad it died! Glad I went American made and simple.

    I can change diapers on our child, but I can't change the crap coming out of washington. That's alright with me as long as these companies keep these changes accessible. What really bites is the other makers out there are using digital control panels that can not be easily modified. Those knock off brands (in quality not in price) are just a pain. I don't post these out there as a slam on SQ, it's a solid brand and they are only doing what the idiots in DC are requiring of them.

    That line didn't make any sense. I laughed and laughed. Just wanted to make sure people knew there was a way to add water without buckets or tearing apart your washer. That information will come in handy for people who do giant load after giant load. For me having to add water to an oversize load now and then isn't that big of a deal. I think you'll enjoy the irony in this: I had to replace my washer in part because the fill valves wouldn't shut off. I had to watch the machine so it wouldn't
