i'm often told that i have an intimidating presence and walk. I'm a slim 5'10 bloke.
walking calmly with purpose and your head up high looking people in the eyes is intimidating, where i come from is a sign of respect and acknowledgement.

Walking with purpose can show people in your surroundings that you are alert and aware of what is going on. It can actually prevent you from being robbed. A straight posture and purpose full walk show that you are not an easy target.

The title immediately reminded me of when I was in the Army. A phrase we heard many times was, “Move with purpose!” which is exactly what you’re describing. One thing that irritates senior NCOs is seeing a soldier in uniform looking as if they’re meandering aimlessly.

Great content Ash. Well produced and narrated.
"Shoulders back, stomach in, head up, swing those arms" as we used to hear with monotonous regularity on the Parade Ground.
Eye contact and positive bearing also provide a modicum of self-defense. 😉

I've never been a big "Bond" film-watcher, but I can appreciate the importance of walking properly!
I think that posture plays a large part in sprezzatura; after all, the biggest step in looking effortless is to feel effortless (i.e., comfortable). Walking confidently neither means slouching or looking down nor a puffed-out chest or rigidness. When an effortless gentleman walks, he does so comfortably-naturally. When an effortless gentleman sits, he feel fine crossing his legs or leaning back outside of the dinner table, because it's inelegant to sit in a coffee shop upright like one is in a tailsuit in "Downton Abbey."
    Good video!

I remember reading this story about Connery getting the role of Bond, in a biography as a young guy starting out. It made an impression, so poise and movement is something I've also been aware of and I enjoy when observing others. How you hold and carry yourself is a very effective component of your whole 'package', and the signals you give out.
As an adjunct to the Connery story, he was already a sporty guy (playing competitive football) however he worked with a ballet teacher who helped him develop that purposeful and dynamic lightness of movement he displayed.

From classic slow waltz to energetic lindy hop to close embrace blues and Argentinian tango, posture matters tremendously.
You're going to use a lot of the core muscles when dancing.

A lot of guys just walk with the minimum muscular effort, because they are actually weak in the hips and glutes. Sean Connery had been a competitive bodybuilder not long before Bond, so he definitely wasn't weak in those body areas. If you want to glide walk "like a panther" , I highly recommend doing fairly heavy kettlebell swings (Russian "Hard Style") for cardio exercise. Combined with everything the Chap proscribes, you'll not just walk better, you'll STRIDE.

    Good morning Ash, Chaps.
I still get identified as a military man In the way I move and carry myself.
It is a natural thing for me now.
    SC as JB1🤔
A new entity needed a relatively obscure actor. It was the making of him, and the legend was born.
Enter a room and own that space.
I will be intrigued, at the Autumn extravaganza, to see a large number of gentlemen all trying to "Connery" the room 😂
I will have immediately grown in stature and confidence upon donning my Black Tie.
I always move with purpose and do not hang about.

When dressed in a suit and feeling great in it, it gives me a boost of confidence especially as I pay attention to detail in what I wear and the colour contrasts and as near to perfection as I can with the shape and size of the knot and the tie’s colour. I think the tie is one of the first things people notice as well as the way you walk. I always turn heads. Dressing like a gentleman makes it even easier to act like a gentleman. A friendly smile helps enormously too. I get compliments from ladies of all ages and some gentlemen too. The sheen on my wool/alpaca overcoat makes it look jet black and all the more striking. Combined with a maroon scarf is an excellent colour coordination.

One comment, if I may: In several of the images accompanying this video, Connery, as James Bond, is shown walking with his hands in his pockets.
If James Bond, as described in the books, went to Eton College, then this would have been a habit that was (literally) beaten out of him. Many generations of British navy and army officers, public schoolboys, etc. were taught not to walk around with their hands in their trouser pockets.
Today's rules are perhaps a little looser. But, in general, its not a great look to walk around with your hands in your trouser pockets.

  • @martinclapton2724

Connery walked with one foot being brought slightly across in front of the other foot. This gave him a slight confident swagger without it being over emphasised such as Sly Stallone or Arnold would do . Roger also had this , his successor to the Bond role but following Bonds did not , including Daniel Craig I’m afraid to say . Sean had it all , watch him walking into the Casino in Thunderball , study it carefully you will see how one foot glides slightly across the other . This gave a slight relaxed swing to the shoulders .

The actor that, in my opinion, has been the embodiment of the walk for a purpose, coming probably from his time as a British Army Officer, is Edward Fox, the quintessential hard assassin in "The Day of the Jackal", but a gentleman at the same time, dynamic, self-assured and no-nonsense. Try to visualise him as Lt. General Brian Horrocks in "A Bridge Too Far" getting into the briefing before the attack, at ease, authoritative but friendly and in no mood to waste time, but at the same time, clear and evocative in his speech, for THE example on how to walk with a purpose. He, different than Connery, would easily disappear in a room, and nobody would notice him for his physical imposing stature, but he would be noticed at once, if he wants to, by his deportment.

Hi Ash, I have rather a different style of walking to that which you recommend. I like to walk relatively slowly and perhaps lacking in purpose, but I like to soak up the atmosphere around me. I still walk with my head held high, but as if in my mind I am surveying my massive estate, as I stroll around London’s wealthiest districts. I guess walking in either of these two ways can show a degree of arrogance and irritate other people.

Ok this maybe out there but try practicing your walk at home in your underwear cause if you can walk confidently in a situation most feel uncomfortable in then you will have no trouble walking confidently in any room

You can’t produce a video about how to walk like James Bond without demonstrating the techniques yourself. This would have been much better if we could watch you doing some purposeful striding in a variety of locations. You can talk the talk, but you need also to walk the walk!

I’m not sure about women I see. They walk pretty slacking and lazily
