sorry to say but if you ever go to whangarei you are not missing much at all i grew up in whangarei During the 80s and it was a complete Dump if you won'ted a job you or anyone else for that matter you had to come to Auckland especially if you won'ted to provide for your family.

Wow, drove this route hundreds of times when I spent ten years working in northland back in the 80’s (but based in Auckland) , haven’t been up that way much since but the state highway seems much improved . Happy times and so pleasant in winter 😀

Why on earth did they dig out those massive cuttings, which are now a rock fall hazard when a series of short tunnels would have been just as cheap, probably easier to build and wouldn't have left such a massive scar on the landscape forever.

So the dual carriageway still only goes to Warkworth in the north and Hamilton in the south and it's now 2024! What a backward country NZ is. Why haven't they extended the dual carriage to Tauranga/Mt Manganui and from there to Rotorua? Why still no metro rail connection between the CBD and the airport, or between the CBD and North Shore suburbs?
