There’s multiple “basements”. Radiohead used Two different studios for theirs. These new ones are at Nigel’s private studio

Mad props to the bottom end, carrying bass lines with breath is a herculean challenge.

Agreed, in particular as lots of the FTB versions are even better than the original album versions. Sound quality is absolutely great and one can hear the intimate atmosphere of the FTB recording sessions. This is how music should be! Would love to have records available of all recordings.

Before the upright bass - the Tuba was the main bass instrument in Jazz bands. Love to see it in a contemporary setting!
It's because unlike the upright it doesn't need amplification and it's easier to carry

Holy shit those lungs of Theon. Just two days ago I saw them in Hamburg and at one point he soloed. And no shit, the sounds he could produce with a tuba were just insane. From playing multiple notes simultaneously to making it sound like a tuba. I had no idea a tuba could even make those sounds. And he just keeeeeeept going and going, I guess it ended up being around 10 minutes of him playing solo non-stop. Just insane.
He did the same thing in Chicago it was fucking amazing. he soloed for like 20 minutes straight but every second was amazing. I have a video on my channel if anyone wants to see

i actually ended up shouting "holy shit!" at one point in that solo section when i saw them. i feel privileged to have seen sons of kemet before they broke up.
So, Radiohead is my fave band. Thom Yorke & Jonny Greenwood formed a side project called The Smile (which I’m sure most of you know) and they recruited an incredibly complex drummer, who is Tom Skinner, of SOK, and now I’m in LOVE!!!

This is not my kind of music at all, but this is amazing. The rhythms are infectious, the melodies interesting, the musicianship is both natural and breathtaking. I will be watching this again and again.

Shabaka Hutchins (tenor) is usually considered the star of this band, and he's great - but it absolutely depends upon Theon Cross, grunting away on the Big Horn.

Decades ago, I saw Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy, and he made this introduction: "And now, the man with the Lips Of Steel, playin' that tuba all night long - BOB STEWART!"
That's Theon, too. The whole band's sound reminds me a bit of a slimmed-down version of Henry Threadgill's Very Very Circus.
You just brought back such great memories. I've heard Bowie's Brass Fantasy many times, they were always simply great!
Once I asked Lester, why he always had that white coat on on stage. His explanation: I'm a scientist, I do research.
I just wish this was two hours long. Simply amazing production for a simply amazing band.

The drumming at the end of "In Remembrance Of Those Fallen" - just wow - even Shabaka grins big about it!
I always expecct two drummers to be chaos.. these two play together perfectly. These musicians are playing something very new that pulls influences from all the the great bebop, hard bop and Avante jazz of the 50's 60's and 70's .
Actually there are some other artists who have 2 drummers and it sounds great
To my ears, this stuff pulls a lot more from Afrobeat and other dance music than anything bop-related
and actually very heavily influenced by many African rhythms, which make immediate sense if you listen to nigerian-brazillian-latin-american black music.

2:35 was such a sick progression of a percussive sax. Almost like gospel chops on brass
Those drummers are such a unique and complimentary pair
Olympian musicians. Just perfect execution combined with a pace and energy I've not seen. The sax player is reminiscent of Gato, Kirk, Pharoah, guys who played brilliantly and with incredible force that in turn produces extended range. Fire.
Tom's drumming and tone leaves me near-speechless. It's like drinking the purest, most refreshing water possible and just the right amount.

Great stuff! The tuba sounds kind of like Primus Les Claypool on bass (around 145 mark as example)
I was gonna say this reminds of a band called "Drums and Tuba" and they opened for les claypool and when i was walking into the club I was SURE it was Les on stage, but no it was the tuba mane
Let's put a band together. "Great! Who's gonna play guitar?" No guitar....I'll play saxophone. "Oh...cool. Who's gonna play keyboards?" No keyboards...I'm gonna play saxophone. "Cool...cool....do you have a bass player? Don't need a bass player...I have a tuba guy. Woah....that's awesome. So....sax and tuba. Anything else you're thinkin' about? "Yes....two drummers!?" So....saxophone, tuba and two drummers. Something tells me you're not going to be playing BEATLES covers. "We could. And lots of other cool stuff." Sounds good to me.

Goodness me. I'm suprised on how this sound like classic Brazilian Jazz. Not Bossa Nova, but the Classic Samba that came from the several Rio de Janeiro's Favelas (Slums in Brazilian Portuguese). Everyone who likes jazz should listen to Cartola and Samba do Partido Alto.
Here for Tom Skinner, stayed for and am staying with the band.
It's a shame this band will not be around much longer.

@@polandk2 I would imagine there is more to it than that. The Smile will not be around for all that long. I am going to see them in December.

First time hearhing this/them! It would be even more insane if Larnell Lewis were on one of the drum sets! Just sayin... They need an NPR Tiny Desk set!
Their current tour is their last; all of them are involved in other projects - Shabaka just started releasing solo stuff, has the band the Ancestors, and the Comet is Coming together with Betamax and Danalouge, who make up Soccer96 - - and who have performed on Tiny Desk ~ one of my favourites!
