The iron the screw is made of is too soft a material for this application. The claws pulling the bearing will bend when they encounter minimal resistance. In other words, the clip is as false as the thumbnail.

Using 2 flat bars and a long nut for your cross member, will make it a lot stronger. Drilling the threaded rod for the handle is weakening the design. Just lock 2 nuts and drive it with a rachet. The weak point of most pullers are the threads of the screw. The best puller I've encountered has an extremely fine thread, even acme thread pullers tends to seize up.
