so for this example the user only input number where you just use str2num but I'm creating a function where the user enter the whole function such "x^2-1" how would you do this? Can you please have a tutorial about that?

AdditionallY, I have a problem about using 'if' OR 'switch case' structures in the GUI callback functions. therefore the error message as follows; Error: File: version2.m Line: 185 Column: 1 Function definition is misplaced or improperly nested. How can I use logic statements (ie. switch case OR if else) in calback funcitons. In shortly, let say there are a popup menu and with three chose (ie. one two three) and then how can I check the value chosen whether it is one or not. Please help.

Why do you have to deal with strings, does the gui read your input as one?
