42:39 Sean, you good man? This is the first Discussion video I watched to its completion, and considering I got back into TOP through you two, it’s so interesting to hear your thoughts and general disappointments with this album. I spent way too much time writing my own rebuttals, point-by-point, in the Discord; because your critiques are absolutely valid and worth thinking about! I had fun laughing, agreeing and thinking about why I disagree with your points.
I'm glad you had rebuttals! It was great to read through them - especially your take on Next Semester, I can definitely see how that delivery would fit the style, even if it's not my thing. And to you question - no, I was not good at 42:39. 😅
I feel personally attacked by you guys destroying Lavish 😂 I disagree with you about so many songs from SAI and Clancy but I loved the discussion and review
Thanks for checking it out! We just filmed one for SAI to give us something positive to talk about, so we hope that one will feel less like an attack! 😅
The reason for uke being the primary instrument in Next Semester is because Tyler wrote it on uke (source: premiere Livestream). The reason for him not transcribing it onto guitar is more unclear, but I think it's either because he didn't want to play it on guitar because he got attached to playing it on uke, or because Paul Meany put the distortion on the uke and Tyler liked it.
Yeah, I can see that - I just personally don't think that choice paid off for them. It clearly doesn't bother everyone - Alex likes both Next Semester and The Craving just fine while I don't - but it was one of a list of decisions that were made on this album that just didn't work for me production-wise
Honestly i agree. Clancy is a fun album and hearing the songs on the clancy tour live definitely made me enjoy the songs a lot more, especially navigating, that s9ng hits hard live. Though in the end, i find myself listening to Vessel and Self Titled Mostly because those are my favorite albums, I live for the old stuff that has been covered by them like Trapdoor and Isle of Flightless Birds, Kitchen Sink, and Fall Away live because Josh can add energy to that wasn’t on the digital record. Though I do love Blurryface and Trench as well, but i agree i found myself enjoying Scaled and Icy more than Clancy. Scaled and Icy is so underrated and its sad half of the fans didn’t give it a chance.
@@ohgeeeznotagain Yeah! You guys are awesome! Twenty one pilots are a band that has a unique sound, but a universal sound can't really be tied to too much songs because each song is different and has their own sound with only a couple of them having similar stuff, or that's at least how I see it. Because of that it left me open to judge each song, and not the album entirely, so I do not understand the hate for SAI because I love most of the songs on it, with only two I don't care for. Clancy was the one for me that made me question whether this album was truly better then SAI like fans were saying, because truly I only enjoy half of the clancy songs on the digital record tbh, but trust me the clancy songs they played on tour sounded really good live, and were still very fun. So yeah, I'm glad I'm not alone that Clancy isn't better than SAI! It also would be cool to see you guys cover the other albums too!
I agree with so many of the points here. I was so excited for this album and mainly because of the way it was marketed (& Paul Meany jumping back in). On first listen it just felt very incohesive and missing something. Although, I find myself liking a lot of the songs on their own as opposed to relating to the whole 10 year story. I am still hoping for some sort of follow-up to make it make sense but…I agree I may be better off looking towards their next project. Favorites: ATROFD, Routines, Overcompensate, Paladin
I really loved this album and its become a no skip one for me personally. I do love SAI too tho ❤ Interesting takes tho.. Tyler just got a baritone uke beforehand and i think he just loved it so much..lol Snap back, vignette, and oldies station have my favorite lyrics
I love seeing a more objective perspective on the album. I love Twenty One Pilots, but there are obviously a lot of fanboys out there that will always say everything the boys do is brilliant and the best thing ever. In the end, I like a lot of the songs on Clancy, but the lore is old and convoluted and the album is a bit schizophrenic... and not in a great way. I just don't love the way the album is put together. Again... a lot of good songs, but a very scattered album that feels like it's missing it's own soul. I cannot stand the sound of the bass at the beginning of Navigating. I end up really liking the song, but the opening is like nails on a chalkboard. Also... I wouldn't be sad if Tyler went back to working on his own a lot and stop leaning on folks like Paul.
Thanks so much for giving your thoughts! For the record, we don't have anything against Paul Meany - my personal favorite TOP song is "Redecorate" and his fingerprints are very evident on that song. But I do hope the band can get to a point where they don't feel like everything has to be packaged and marketed through the lens of the lore, and if that means going back to Tyler working alone or with different producers, then that's great!
I agree. I'm a fan who genuinely hasn't disliked almost anything they've done (except for specific songs e.g. Formidable), but I don't blindly hold these opinions because "Tyler is a saint who is incapable of doing anything badly." I do think I've enjoyed their stuff less and less as the years go on. Clancy was an awesome album though; I enjoyed it a lot, but I still feel disappointed. And it's more because of false expectations rather than It being bad. I just kinda miss the sound of their older albums. At this point, I'm really curious what Tyler would make if he made another experimental album with his own production and his own writing to see what he comes up with, though I understand that he doesn't want to 'Backslide' to where he started which in this case would be RaB, the lowest point of his music career success-wise. Also as a side note, I made the mistake of looking at other ppls opinions on Clancy and it ruined it for me. I'll never do that again, and urge anyone reading this not to do the same.
@@ohgeeeznotagain I really like Paul Meany as well. Agree... Redecorate is fantastic. I love the collab session with MUTEMATH. I feel like their identity as a band has been compromised and diluted by the way in which Tyler has become seemingly dependent on outside support and affirmation. I think the Tyler and Josh duo has faltered and I think that shows in the uninspired drum parts and incoherent structure of some of the songs and the album over all. Josh almost seems like a session drummer for the band and a fun personality to have on tour and less like a true collaborator. I know Tyler has always been the engine, but it's different when you have two guys grinding it out together all the time vs "now it's time to pull in the drummer". To be really blunt... I get the feeling that Paul is riding the TOP wave at times and that Tyler is willing to hand over the steering wheel because 1) it gives him a bit of an out when it comes to criticism and 2) he's a husband and a dad now and has more important things to put his attention to and can't just live the music the way he used to. I definitely don't find fault in that and I absolutely love that he loves being a dad... but, that said, I do think the music suffers for it at this particular stage... and that's ok. I hope and trust that the boys will get back to it in time.
There’s definitely a lot to think about there - and I don’t want to get too speculative. But one of the interview moments from this era that really caught me off-guard was when Tyler half-jokingly said that he would rather be a realtor than a musician if no one was listening to his music. Even if it wasn’t 100% serious, that’s a BIG difference from the way he used to talk about “playing as hard for 5 people as we would for 5,000” or having this innate drive to create. In that way, it does make sense that this album has the most Paul Meany co-writes and production, and go to what you said about Tyler having other things that he’s focused on. It’s also why I said at the end of this video that if they had given this record a proper finale and announced that this was their last album, at least for a while, I would’ve completely understood - I’ve been there as a musician before, too, where you just need to stop and re-evaluate. Again, all speculation, but if that’s what they need to do, I hope they’re given the time to do that between touring and whatever’s coming next.
Next time we'll review Scaled and Icy so that we can talk about a TOP record that we really like! Until then, feel free to comment on our latest song that it sounds "unfinished" or "half-hearted" to take us down a peg. 😅 ua-cam.com/video/VSQbz4OLa6s/v-deo.html
I feel like people are taking Lavish too seriously. it’s clearly just for fun and I love the music video too. I’m surprised you didn’t like overcompensate or at the risk of feeling dumb. I’m glad vast majority of reviewers seemed to have loved the album, yours and Brad taste in music are the only somewhat negative ones I’ve seen. Everyone has a different taste though! 😊 I think it’s my favourite after Blurryface at the moment.
Also for the ending- we don’t know the meaning of it yet. It could be the end, we won’t know till the music video comes out. Could also just be a cycle, going back to BF.
Thanks for watching! We certainly have no problem with frivolous songs - we've made plenty ourselves and we love Scaled and Icy (Bounce Man and all). Our biggest problem with Lavish was that it seemed to be going for something fun and humorous but just completely failed at getting there for us - both lyrically and instrumentally. To your point about the story not being done and possibly ending in a cycle, that certainly is a possibility - it's been a major theme of their music. But it still strikes me as so odd to have the ending exist somewhere outside the album - be that a music video or a deluxe album or anything of that nature. The only other option that would make sense to me is that the tour itself is positioned as the end of the story - the live show has been the only other aspect of twenty one pilots' artistry that outweighs their albums, so maybe that's the solution? We'll see!
I love Lavish so much! I think it’s my favorite song on the album… usually the reason I love it are the same reasons other folks don’t like it… well, to me it sounds fantastic. I’m legitimately surprised so many people don’t like the sound of it. The vehemence of the hate this song receives make me want to hear songs that the reviewers like… I’m guessing I probably won’t in many cases lol. Different strokes for different folks I guess. 🤷♂️
I wish we would've talked more about that video for the single version of The Craving! I thought that was a fantastic piece of visual storytelling that really captured where I think Tyler and Josh's heads were at in the making of this album as they come to terms with where their careers are at the commercial underperformance of SAI. It's something that we can relate to on our own small level as a band, too - you put all your time and care into something and just like that it's over. That's why I (Sean) like Oldies Station so much - it's that quiet bit of assurance that you just have to keep moving even when the world isn't in your corner!
What if "welcome back to Trench" is because he is back in dema teaching the citizens via siezing (in the mv)...not welcome back to Trench 2. This is obvioisly not a Trench 2. Clancy is better than Trench imo 😂 can't convince me otherwise.
Kinda hate your review ngl. You guys shit all over twenty one pilots and your intro doesn't really make up for it. "Oh we are fans of your music and we love sai". That right there is a crock of crap. Because Clancy kinda solidifies the sounds pioneered in sai. Smh at the guy from Cbus. What a pretentious nitpicking review. Of course the guitar guy gonna crap on a uke.
I love all the songs except lavish I don’t know what they were thinking with that one, I agree with y’all on that, I do enjoy the video but the song is awful, it hurts me to say any song by them is awful, not a super fan of scaled and icy but the songs were 10 times better than lavish even bounce man and I don’t like that song, wishing they hadn’t put lavish on the album they could’ve had a different song with them in suits.
Your analysis doesn't resonate at all. Overcompensate is one of the best songs--if not their best ever--and has risen higher on the charts than any song on Scaled and Icy because of its wide appeal. Backslide is fantastic lyrically and musically and is still amazing after 100 listens. You don't get At The Risk because you know nothing about rap. Your musical knowledge is far too narrow for you to appreciate the spectrum that is presented on this album. Until you listen to more music and understand what there is to appreciate about different genres you will be trapped in your narrow opinions and miss out on all the amazing talents of TOP. I give your analysis 0/10.
Jesus 😂 as a HUGE top fan, they make extremely valid points. It is true that overcompensate introduces an album we’re not getting. Clancy is not trench 2. And I agree to the point that the songs, while all decent by themselves, are a complete cornucopia musically. I actually think they broke it down pretty accurately and objectively. All that being said I’ve still had Clancy on repeat. Just some odd choices made throughout. Appreciate other perspectives and don’t just be a homer.
This review is actually what I needed! Please make more 21p album reviews
It might be fun to work through their back catalog - if we have time, we'll certainly give it a try! Thanks for watching!
Lavish is my favorite song in the album ngl. Ur opinion is ok though
I just like how it sounds, nice review
