Hi Felicia thank you so much for this video. I had a question, I am about to work for this outpatient health center that's part of this large network including hospitals and other healthcare facilities and was asked to apply for an NPI. I've never had one before. Do you know if I would have to apply for an individual (Type 1) or an organization type 2? Thank you for your help!

Hi, since I have an individual npi and I will have an npi type 2 for my practice. Do I need to enter both on the cms1500 form. type1 in box 24 and type2 in box 33? thanks

Hey! yes, as long as your insurance contracts have both NPIs and you set up as the group you would use both. You would have the individual NPI in 24J for rendering provider and the group NPI in box 33 as the billing provider.

Thanks! I had to obtain an NPI to do outpatient counseling at a hospital. Would I use the same NPI for my private business?

Hey Stephen, If you have an individual NPI, that will stay the same. The individual NPI stays the same even if you change work settings. According to the CMS "Your NPI won’t change, even if your name, address, taxonomy, or other information changes." You may need to update the information on file with the NPPES NPI Registry (like you mailing address and primary practice address though). Did you set-up the NPI information or did your employer? If you are obtaining a group NPI for your practice, you will end up linking the individual to the group.

@@mydietitianjourney Thanks Felicia. That makes sense. I set up the NPI, so I assume that means it's individual.

@@stephenalajajian You can do a search on the NPPES NPI registry to check. It shows whether the NPI is type 1 as an individual or not. Likely that is what it is. You can then log in to NPPES to update any info! npiregistry.cms.hhs.gov/
