    Another trick you can do with the bottom snare mic (or top mic), is the the SPL snare trick. Send it to an aux with a transient designer on it. You just want to increase the sustain only to bring out the wires. Then add a compressor and a bit of reverb. Blend in with the overall snare mix to taste. It gives you that exploding snare sound.

      I usually just pull up a drum replacement tool. You get those very stereo'ed quality samples you can then carve and mistreat to your liking.😊

    Didnt know CLA was putting reverb only on the bottom snare, but i been doing that lately and I love the results so much better than reverb on top snare. I also automate it accordingly.

    I have used this trick. It works great! It also makes it easy to edit out any odd notes from other instruments that might have gotten in via the midi. For me, it is more appropriate for Pop or Metal because it can add just a little robotic element that doesn't work for every song.

  • @SeanFlora
    @SeanFlora 10 місяців тому +3

    That bottom snare sound seems quite late. I would edit the sample more tightly, and maybe even move the midi notes 15-25ms earlier.

      I think it's better to have a little bleed, then not have any at all. It helps glue the kit together and gives a more natural sound. Obviously, this is genre dependent.

    before plugins I would use a pro-co turbo rat on a auxiliary channel on the snare top and bottom. sometimes a big muff on a separate aux.ive also double mic'd the bottom snr to do the reverb trick so I can saturate and verb separate channels. great for metal or rock.

    I always like your tips. I’ve been working on my snare chops lately so it’s timely as well. I’ve been having success sending the bottom to 2 auxes both with a very tight gate. One has a reverse reverb that is very short and the other has a plate that is timed to the track. It has made me stop putting verb on the top.

  • @PerimeterAudioStudios
    @PerimeterAudioStudios 9 місяців тому

    About the gating stuff, use the midi to trigger the gate as a key input on the live channel: 100% accurate ;)

    Cool idea but the final result in the example sounds pretty bad. I like keeping the bottom snare mic ungated and outside of my snare aux. you want to hear the snare wires rattle! Like the Black album.

    Creating your own samples of your kit is a beautiful way to reinforce! However, I believe CLA puts Reverb on the TOP SNARE. That way the crack reverberates, not the sizzle of the snares, which can become too much. (25ms predelay)
    I also heard sometimes he puts the reverb on the room mics instead and does not put any predelay because it's already distance of the room mic.

    Hey bobby I love your videos, been whatching about 1 year now. I have been referencing a lot of mixes from different mixers over the years but one seems to stick out all the time: Serban Ghenea. and for me its his drums. So i wanted to ask you if you have any idea on how he gets his drums so super snapy and crispy? I have tried everything from parralel compression to transient shapers but non of it does the trick. any idea on how he does it?
