    Man I miss the BIG DRUMS of the 80s. I remember being in the studio in the mid 90s and I was playing guitar for another band. And I made a suggestion for big drums and they looked at me like I just killed a small puppy.

    Classic "less is truly more" method. Creating dynamics and mixes that move and breathe with the natural momentum of the song are so satisfying. Great tips! 👍🏼

    Awesome bud! Yes yes! Knowing the limits of human hearing
    certainly helps us here. And of course, the opening bars of any recording
    are crucial-we MUST grab the listener by the lapels and command their attention :) ☮⬆🏁🎵💎🎯

    The first time I noticed this "Trick" was on Queen's 1997 "Queen Rocks"-Version of "I can't live with you". I noticed that the drum sound started bigger than on the original version on the "Innuendo"-album but as the arrangement got more complex through out the song the drums "faded away" in the mix. As a 15-year old at that time I'd rather had a less convoluted mix and a bigger drum sound instead but my preferences changed over the years.

    Totally makes sense to back off the verb in the chorus because it brings the kick and snare closer to the front (especially if it's a mid to fast tempo song). I'll have to experiment with this on my next mixes.

    • @ronroyer1888
      @ronroyer1888 4 місяці тому +1

      Great observation! Of course, Mutt would bing in his own patented personal multilayered background vocals, further thickening all the chorus elements, so it figures that something has to go.
      I started thinking about dynamic drum treatments with ZZ Top’s “Rough Boy”, where they alternated small room reverb with a big hall treatment.in the same bar. Opens up so many possibilities.
      In your half time break you could even use a totally dry snare to bring the snare right into the listener’s face… or a reverb gated swell. Jars the listener to move in closer. Blue Oyster Cult used that on Don’t Fear the Reaper, where the staccato rhythm guitar had a wet delay until the end of each phrase, where it was totally dry. Sucked you right in.

    Depth field. Cut the reverb and the snare and kick move up front. This CAN help in a chorus. As far as frequency clashing, complimentary EQ and unmasking plugins are awesome.

    How many kicks make up the kick drum sound? Same for the snare? Are they all at a consistent volume? I'm certainly not haring a lot if any volume change.

    • @BobbyHuff
      @BobbyHuff  4 місяці тому

      It’s not a volume change as much as drying up the sound by pulling the drum rooms and verb samples down to make more room for other things.
