  • American Sign Language (ASL) video showing some gender neutral family signs that I use. I am not the final authority on those signs. As with other languages, signs/words are changing and evolving all the time. Please check with the Deaf individual you interact with on the signs they use. Also each region of North America have dialect signs as there are dialects in spoken languages. Here are some of the gender neutral signs!

[HOH] Thank you! This is so helpful. I would love to see a gender-neutral *family* sign for child. Is there one that you use or have seen? Not daughter or son but offspring. I don't like using the generic sign for any child, but hope to learn one for offspring that is as affectionate as the words son or daughter.

Thank you SO much for making this video! Its exactly what I was lookig for to describe myself using sign. Just wondering if things have evolved more since this video was made. Unfortunately there eoesntvseem to be much info out there about it - and even less (like none!) in other languages like DSL

I will make a new one to confirm, seems some of the signs I made are still the same so far.

Is there a neutral sign for your parent's sibling, similar to aunt or uncle?

Oh I see! I also thought compound Parents was gender neutral but I was wrong thank you for the clarification :). And it's very cool how we get the Gender Neutral sibling, cousin, etc from that as well I love it
What do you call a Non Binary Person who has a Nephew or Niece? (Not uncle or aunt)

Just curious if the sign for "gender neutral parent" is a singular form only or that can describe parents in the sense of parents like Jenna and I (lesbian couple) or gay dads or just two gender neutral parents together? Hope that makes sense. :)

that is one of the signs I'm adding to my next video- show mommies (lesbian couple), daddies (gay couple).
As for gender neutral parents - well since its a noun, the singular is tapped twice on the cheek same as tapped twice for mom/dad. so for showing plural- I was thinking of doing the sign same way I do for two mommies, two daddies, but then some kids have four parents- (mom with step-dad, dad with step-mom... or co-parents - partners partnering with parents..etc.) something like "they parents" same as "those moms" "those dads" to show many. I will put in video to show what I've done for this.
