John = accurate with a camera, not so much with a rifle
Hickok45 = accurate with a rifle, not so much a camera
Lol! True
To be fair, the rounds were hitting pretty consistently in the same place. I’d surmise the rifle was zeroed with a different round and the point of impact was just a bit different with the tracers. It’s a common occurrence, regardless of the shooter.
Life is full of trade offs.....
@@stlpro2a386 in sorry for your loss
Slow your roll and know your role.
Mad respect for Hickok45 not wanting to drop the camera and say give me that rifle boy I'll show you how it's done lol
Lol.
Yea but 230 yards freehand with reddot I give him the benefit of the doubt
Looks like the optic is just off... it was consistently high and left
Maybe that had us all fooled and John was missing on purpose so that they would get more comments … for the algorithm’s sake 😏🤔😎… we’ll done boys
Could be the trigger…my trigger on my Ruger 556 was pretty stiff….replaced it with a Rise trigger.
I had one since it came out and it's been flawless shooting almost all supressed. Very light weight, adjustable gas block, and decent two stage trigger. Was just over $1,000. In contrast, a few years ago, I got a POF Revolution that won't run despite two trips back to the factory (they're local) and over 700 rounds trying to get it to run.
How’s the accuracy?
Now that Frank is gone POF may never be the same (local) as well
700 rounds of .308 is a spicy meatball
I have a POF Rogue with about 400 rounds through it. Weighs only 5.9 lbs and is (so far) flawless. Works with both range ammo and defensive ammo. They say to use heavy bullets, but I’m not getting any rounds sideways( again so far). The recoil is minimal for a .308. I have no experience with AR-10s, so I can’t compare. I handled an SFAR at a LGS and was turned off by the generic fit and finish. That price is tough to beat, though one generally gets what one pays for.
If I paid north of $2500 for a POF Revolution, and there were issues, I’d keep sending it back until I had a reliable firearm. But that’s just me.
Is the 16” barrel threaded for a suppressor?
Ruger is really starting to take over. They are coming out with great products in last few years.
Their AR 556 MPR runs like a dream. I'm impressed so far.
I love my Ruger MPR rifle. First AR15 purchase for myself and probably my last.
@@ryanp6999 it's a solid rifle. I've run the hell outta mine and no malfunctions to date.
Mini 14 is chit jams the newer ones, nothing but problems
I love everything Ruger! Just found a Security 9 for 320$. Had the compact and loved it. Looking forward to shooting in the backyard today.
I bought the first one I saw, 16". For those who might be wondering, including Hickok's son, standard AR-15 charging handles work on the SFAR. That was the first thing I changed after my first range trip. AND, it put a little venison in the freezer this year.
Is it decently accurate with the 16 inch barrel? I'm thinking about picking one up
@@NotTooHasty It's as accurate as I can shoot it. I have an older Nikon PR31 2-7x32 with the 'Spot On' (BDC) reticle.
@@randiecoulter7872 In that case I may just have to snatch one up ;)
So nice that Ruger included their Ruger Elite 452 AR-Trigger upgrade, a two-stage trigger with a smooth, crisp, 4.5 pound trigger pull and has a 30% faster lock time over standard MSRs. Great review! Thanks for sharing.
I´ve got the 16.1" & it has run without any problems. Have changed (simply cause i prefer it this way) the charging handle, safety, magrelease, bolt catch and takedown & pivot pins. Truly love this rifle...feels & handles like any AR-15 & soft recoil.
Good job, John. Thanks for the demonstration. Appreciate the reasoning about how important owning, carrying, shooting a 7.62X51MM auto loading rifle is to an individual. For those who haven’t carried six thirty round mags of 7.62 (.308), compared to six thirty rd. mags of 5.55MM, it’s something to consider.
The arc of the bullet from the tracer rounds at 230 yards was kinda mesmerizing. It had me wondering what you were lobbing across the range. It looked like more bullet drop than .308 specs call for and appeared slower than I would have thought a .308 to be. It was optical illusion I guess. Very interesting. Thank you for this presentation. It was educational and entertaining.
Not.
@Anton Chigurh you don't even use bullets though, cattle gunner
I`ll bet those were civilian tracer rounds.
If i had to guess, the tracers were breaking up on their way out, and were deviating wildly.
Tracers are meant to give you a 'rough-idea' of where your non-tracer rounds are going, but they are never going to be as 'accurate' as the non-tracer rounds. They are meant to help guide you to the correct area, not be a laser-pointer :)
In SOTIC MTT, when I got on the spotting scope for the first time, I was kinda shocked to see the ballistic arc of M118 Special Ball from the M24 Sniper System. I thought someone threw a rock at the targets as a joke, looked up at one of our SF instructors, and asked about it.
"That 7.62 for ya."
Picked up mine with the 20" barrel about a week ago. It really is all it's made out to be. Solid little gun, and definitely a good buy. You know it's a .308 (as opposed to .223) when shooting, but easily forget when carrying. The muzzle brake is quite annoying to anyone else on the firing line. Suppressor helps, but the shooter easily is gassed out.
I can barely tell... Took the silly boomer break off... Try a huxwrx can
Nice man, I just picked mine up yesterday and ran about 300 rounds through it. It’s running flawlessly and the fireball coming out of the comp is quite entertaining for everyone around me

Ruger is always making a great quality firearm that is budget minded. I've got a couple barrel heavy AR platforms and it makes the ergonomics always feel strange to me because when standing and firing I can feel the weight shift forward as a empty the mag.
This will be my first centerfire rifle and I'm very excited about it!
congrats man 😎
did you get it? how is it?
@@perseusrex614 still on a wait list at my LGS.
The power and punch of this rifle is really impressive. The rounds were smacking those targets with some heavy impact. Liked it a lot. Thanks guys.
Looking very good! I'll ad it to my list :-)
Nice to see you again John 👍
Care to post your list ?
I like it . I had one of the first ar 556 plain Jane . Probably had it a year and a half . It started shootings to the left . Called ruger , the sent me a box AND the shipping labels. Got the gun back quickly, said they put a new barrel in it . Went to the range , shooting tight groups but to the right now . Ruger sent more shipping labels . About a week later they emailed me a picture of a target they had shot with it , looked good . Said they had put a new barrel in it . I said that’s fine if it’s shooting like that now . But why would a (another) new barrel make any difference. Emailed me a couple days later and said they were shipping my a new model to my ffl dealer . So a new model and after all of that I just paid $20 to my ffl for the new transfer fee. I went and bought another ruger ar556 while my old one was being repaired . Anyway with Ruger standing behind their product like that . I’m thinking of getting their 16” ar10 now . Whether I need it or not lol . Have a blessed day all . Stay prayed up and loaded up . 🙏😀💕
Ruger has excellent customer service
I want one!!! Ruger for the win
From what I've seen thus far I think Ruger did a great job on the SFAR. If it proves to be reliable I would consider getting the 16" model after its been out foe at least a year.
DON'T. Took my brand new one out today. Jammed on 2nd shot, then every other shot. Setting 3 and 2. FTE, FTF, and double feeds. Sending it back tomorrow. It's absolute garbage.
He has so many of his dad’s mannerisms. Cool

@@MP-ky3hc Indeed we are. My dad's been gone for 7 years, and the more time goes by, the more I see my own mannerisms as his...and the rest from my grandpa
I just zeroed in my 2 new SFAR. It groups 1 MOA at 200 yards, has mild recoil and weighs 18 oz less than a SW MP 10. Also half the cost of many older AR 10 models.
Best grouping I've heard of so far "studying" the SFAR. Nice...
The biggest advantage of this concept is that, other than the BCG and barrel, you can use AR-15 components which makes modifications easier.
I'm buying this rifle. I think I want the 20 inch barrel too.
Same.
I’m stuck on the same predicament. What set you on the 20” if you don’t mind me asking?
I had a PA10 with 3-9x40 for deer hunting. It weighed 10 lbs. my neck hurt by the time I walked in to stand with a harness on carrying a few things plus a 10lb rifle around my neck. After hunting a few days straight my neck hurt a lot. Sold that DAR Deer Assault Rifle and have gotten the SFAR in 16.5 barrel. Assault rifle because I assault deer with it. Have gone as light as possible with scope and mounts and sling. Hopefully saving a few pounds. That’s significant. The other option POF rogue was 500$ more retail. POF revolution is 1000$ more. Ruger trigger is better than I had, front stock feels better, butt stock is tighter, upper to lower is tighter.
I have the 16 inch model with a H2 buffer and the gas setting on 2 the recoil is just like shooting a 223 I love it
I was wondering what that set up would feel like with the brake removed. Loud is not ideal.
Have you staked the castle nut and properly staked the gas key screw?
We started the range on fire all the time with the M-60’s.
Right, we lit the ranges on fire running tracers on Ft Sill sometimes too lol.
I have a 16 inch model. It has been jamming(failure to feed jam, It’s pinching the round right at the bottleneck taper) with Aguila 150 grain 308’s and Winchester white box 76 2 x 51 somewhat more than I wanted to jam. It also doesn’t want to hold back on the last round. Hopefully I just need to keep running some Rounds through it.The more I run through it the better it’s been getting but it’s still disappointing right off the bat when buying a $1200 rifle. Don’t get me wrong I love Ruger that’s why I bought their 308. But still you know what I mean
Sounds like you need more gas to cycle , what setting do you have your gas adjustment ? Thinking about getting the 16 “ barrel model and was wondering about this same cycling problem before i buy one . 16” or 20” ? What say everyone ?
Been drooling over this rifle since it came out but I dont have easy access outdoor spaces to shoot and this would just sit around alot. Still want it so badly
Did you get it
@@dilly2023 nope, Illinois resident here, the gun ban came a few weeks later out of thin air after I commented this. Had I known what was coming I would of bought a bunch of different guns I had been putting off for later purchases. Sucks.
Savage makes a nice shooting AR-10 for same price range. I have one. My only regret is it doesn't like steel case. I kept blowing barrel nuts so my gunsmith sent it savage and they replaced the upper and all they said is I guess you can't shoot steel case so don't or they want warranty it again. No reason as to why no disclaimer when you buy to not shoot steel case so yeah that.
If it's a small frame, it's not an ar10. Its and AR 308. Probaly closer to the DPMS pattern. AR10s and AR 308s are different animals and few parts are interchangeable.
This can technically be called a .308 ar-15
john does good but i'm just used to Mr Hickok , i have a 308 deer rifle i'm looking to get a regular 5.56 223 AR but looks like Ruger has made a winner there
best part of the video? Hickock45 giggling in the background after the magdump at 13:13 :D
Interesting about the "felt" weight. I felt like my ar556 (m4 style) was heavier than the m16a1 I carried. I think there's something about the way Ruger puts them together. They just feel so solid. Man I regret selling that rifle. The one that I let get away.
I've never handled an m16 but do you think the plastic hand guard has anything to with it?
@@cmtptr that's a good question I'm really not sure. I just know when I picked up the A1 it kind of felt like a toy, but when I picked up that Ruger it felt like a real piece of hardware.

That model is a big improvement over their earlier model I turned down. My only concern is how it handles without the big brake.
It's great to have a 20" option finally!
What’s the benefit of the 20” over the 16” ? I’m looking in to purchase one but can’t decide on barrel length
Surprised no one has replied. My guess is accuracy and bullet speed leaving the barrel because of the longer "burn time" in the barrel.
(Might be good to study the optimal barrel length for the 308.)
Hi John good to see you doing a video Awesome ruger ar 10 cool to see tracers see where a bullet is going thanks for the information on the rifle thanks for sharing John
Kinda wish this had come out when I was doing my AeroPrecision AR10 build for hunting. Its phenomenal and has served me well through some brutal hunts but she's a pig to lug around the wilderness for weeks on end! I couldn't afford or find the POF .307 at the time.
Same, now I gotta decide if I'll sell mine to pick one of these up...
Pof is unreliable junk so you did fine
Love it! It'll be my next/5th ruger investment. Thanks for the review! Keep up the good work.
Looking good but I want Ruger to bring back the metal folding stock Mini-14.
Samson is making the original metal folding stocks for the mini.
I feel like they did or said they were going to, but I can’t remember where I heard that.
It's nice to see John out in front of the camera again keep them precious metals flowing out of the chamber/ barrel yall
A muzzle brake which helps to increase the tinnitus... Happy New Year, John!
Might help to ditch the red dot for a scope.
What a great man you are.
Nice review! I've had a 16" version on backorder for 3 weeks. Just got email confirmation this morning that it's on its way. 3 to 5 days & I should be slingin some .308 rounds!!!! I can't wait for it to arrive. My first AR platform rifle. I think my SKS & AK might collect some dust when I get my hands on this new Ruger?? LOL
Great review! I got one of these with the 16 inch barrel when it first came out. So far I love it. I agree that the charging handle needs to be changed. I changed mine but here's a little info to help people who get this rifle and want to change the charging handle. Get the AR-15 sized charging handle, NOT the AR-10 sized one. Ask me how I know... LOL I got a Radian Raptor in AR-15 and it fits perfectly and works well. Everyone refers to this rifle as an AR-10 because it fires the 308 but think of it more like an AR-15 that fires the 308.
By the way, I love the T-shirt at the end:) I gotta get me one of those.
A friend gave me some 45acp tracers... I'm a little afraid of setting the countyside aflame. Shoot on a damp day, duh. Thanks
Good choice, these gun ideal for self defense & hunting or both could be, I would recommend the lightest the better, many things would be better when weight is light

Down side you can't put the upper on another lower and different forearm furniture will be hard to fit.
It uses a standard ar-15 barrel nut pattern, so just about any ar-15 rail will fit. But yes, the lower isn’t going to be something you can just swap out.

Part of the cost savings is in the use of readily available AR-15 components.
Great video John! Well done. You've convinced me that I DON'T need this rifle because of the extra weight of toting the ammo. The 556 really looks good to me now (lol).

John Hickok's point about the heaviness of 7.62 Nato ammunition and heavy barreled rifles, shocked me back to reality. I wouldn't be willing to carry that extra weight, more than a block!
Damn hickock, these videos ain't the same without you. miss "smoking pot" with you!
Since they made a whole new lower it is surprising that they included the forward assist ( nobody uses them ). Me, I would rather have an M1A Scout.
The light weightedness of this rigle would make it a good choice for hunting because you could use a 5 rd mag.

Reminds me of the Springfield armory saint edge lower.
That's nice I don't know I kind of would love to get the Smith & Wesson M&p 10 but it's not allowed in Massachusetts :-(
Kind of skeptical about the price there. I ran across a new DPMS LR308 with the heavy 24 inch bull barrel for about the price of this recently, and it is one of the good DPMS when they were made in St. Cloud, MN. And a 15 inch plate at 230 yards is a no brainer, even with iron sights, young man. I was expecting dad to step in and give a lesson.
I hate muzzle breaks, even if I have to eat the recoil without them.
I'm sold on one of these. Though I think I'd prefer the 16" barrel over the 20" so that way it's a little more maneuverable in close quarters.
His bullets have pretty Christmas lights 👍😊
Thanks for the review was looking at getting one this sold me on it. Keep up the great videos guys.

This is a very nice rifle indeed--and its good to see John again! I would also like to see more AR10/general 7.62mm rifles being shot. From what I have read there is a growing popularity of the heavier cartridge. Although I am not sure why that is the case right now... Are they easier/cheaper to buy than .223/5.56 these days? Whatever the case, an excellent video for a new Year!
Nah, .308 is still roughly twice the cost of .223 per round right now. It's always hard to tell why certain trends occur, but with the quick rise in popularity of AR-style pistols came an accompanying rise in interest in 30 caliber projectiles. And alongside that, since 2020 there's been millions of new gun owners, many buying an AR-15 as their first gun. So it might make sense to some of those new gun owners to look into other AR pattern rifles like the AR-10?
7.62 is almost always cheaper than 308 though. This is from personal observation at local gun shops and stores to online retailers.
@@Belial69699 do you mean 7.62x51, which is basically NATO standard .308? Or do you mean 7.62x39, the AK boolet?
@@theKashConnoisseur I was referring to the 7.62x51. I've personally noticed that 308 is almost always more expensive than the 7.62x51 round. But yes, 308/7.62x51 is more expensive than your 223/5.56 rounds. But depending on which platform you prefer or depending on which suits your purpose (AR-15 or AR-10) the ammo may be more expensive than the other.
@@Belial69699 I guess it makes sense, seeing as 7.62 NATO would probably have a lot of military surplus supply, being a NATO standard. Makes me wonder why 5.56 isn't cheaper than .223 for the same reason though.
