I commend Joey on his commitment to having a beautiful tree. Not many would lop off 70% of a new tree. Good friends like Nigel make it easier on sure!!
This was amazing to watch! The decisions, the second guessing, scary cuts, then amazing differences they make! It's exactly like we noobs go through! It was somewhat relieving to see experienced person and (I consider) a veteran grower do this. Thank you for this Nigel, and thanks Joey for being a part of this as well, Your tree look awesome!
Nice work! I really appreciate the way you talk through every decision that you make. As a relative beginner to be able to not just see you make a cut somewhere but to hear your thought process around making that cut is invaluable. That kind of information can be translated to any tree and isn’t captured in the many 10 minute videos that are out there. Congratulations for great videos and thanks.
Each cut in my head: no that won’t look good.....makes the cut.....oh goodness much better...... Repeat for 45 minutes Nigel you know what you are doing and I love that Joey trusted you through the entire process.
Wow! You and Joey found the tree in there. Would love to hear how the tree progresses, please. Joey will be able to start an entire nursery with all of those substantial cuttings. What an interesting video.
Enjoyed this video a lot. Reminds me of when I first started to learn bonsai. Even though I had no idea what I was doing, my teacher convinced me to join a group of about twenty students for a styling contest. We each began with the same plant material about the same size. I kept removing branches until I won The Charlie Brown Award. It's hard to stop once you get started. I was impressed with your thoughtful collaboration. Even still, you hold your breath until you see the result.
I always keeping my eyes into the bucket...afraid it gonna fall....i cant wait to see the progress of this tree nice video Nigel...greeting from the Philippines
Never realized until now that portulaca and purslane are close relatives. All this business about eating the very sour leaves prompted me to look it up. Very cool.
I was half expecting a stump with one branch at the end. ;) But no, it turned out to be quite a believable bonsai tree. Can’t wait to see it in it’s bonsai pot.
Another great collab. Looks like Joey enjoyed getting in the Bonsai ‘Zone ‘. Portulacaria afra are structurally awkward plants. You guys did a super job making the tough choices to get this tree sorted out. I imagine that it was a bit hard at first for Joey to make his newly purchased tree shrink cut by cut, but then as the process gradually revealed the wonderful primary structure of a handsome weeping tree he couldn’t help but be delighted. ~ I have a large garden bed full of P. afra. This last winter they increased in height from about 5 feet tall to 7 ft.. Then as spring approached the top shoots bent over from their own weight and now they are about 5 or 6 feet tall again.
Nigel, love your work. Joey may have a nice forest with all those BIG CUTS. Would love to see another port forest like yours to keep updates on. I hope to have a forest like yours one day!
Oh wow! What a specimen, I can't wait to see it develop. I actually have an enormous Crassula ovata that was about 110 cm tall, but I am too afraid to prune it back really hard. I only took a little but off.
You should leave a little stub after you cut a branch off because portulacaria die back pretty significantly. Then you can go back in and clean it up a few weeks later after it dries out
I think this is how you cut your hair Nigel!!! Great educational video on ports! That thing is huge for being in a pot and variegated. White or black back drop would help a lot. Amazing transformation!
It must have been really hard for Joey to buy a tree with so much growth and cut most of it away, but in the long term that growth will come back and be persuaded to grow with more flow. In the end the tree will look better for it I think.
I don't think so, they need the fresh air and the seasonal changes to be healthy. You might keep one alive for a year, maybe two, but that would be the limit.
Can I ask why u carve back the stub ? I thought jades were sectional and should be left to die back and scab over to the nearest section. Thanks for your time, keep up the great content Nigel ! Please update on wounds !
You can prune the cuts flush and they will heal over smooth. When you are pruning branches, we always cut between the rings, to allow the branch to die back to the next ring, where the new leaves should emerge.
Imagine if humans had to trim limbs and fingers to keep their numbers down? I can imagine Nigel saying, 'well, I only want 10 or so fingers....so here I go.'
I haven't seen Joey in a long time, maybe three years ago. He told me it had been nibbled on my a squirrel, but was alive and recovering. I hope to see him again and I'll try and get an update!
@@TheBonsaiZone Yea, It's always nice when you can find a cool nursery tree, and get a pretty nice styling the first go. The natural weeping is really cool for this Portulacaria.
@@TheBonsaiZone Nigel, would you be interested in some Mimosa\Persian silk tree seeds? There is a beautiful tree in my neighborhood that is producing seed pods at the moment and I thought of you. I know you have a Acacia trees but not sure about Mimosa \ Silk trees. If you are interested I would love to send some to you.. Just let me know! :)
Eventually, Joey is going to wait until the tree has grown lots of leaves. We did pull the tree out of the pot and it wasn't root bound, it looks like it was potted up this spring.
I would've cut the trunk after the second major branch on the left 45:07 Just before the trunk starts leaning to the right. Then develop the left top branch to develop into the apex.
when are you going to be working on spacing out the branches on your head (hair) :p would make a fine bonsai! all in good fun, keep up the great work loving the vids
Joey gave them away at the club meeting, most of the large ones were taken, but I did have to bring the left overs home with me, maybe a future forest?
I commend Joey on his commitment to having a beautiful tree. Not many would lop off 70% of a new tree. Good friends like Nigel make it easier on sure!!
I think Joey has a good tree to build upon now!
This was amazing to watch! The decisions, the second guessing, scary cuts, then amazing differences they make! It's exactly like we noobs go through! That looks fabulous. He came to the right place for help

Nigel you know what you are doing and I love that Joey trusted you through the entire process.
Their were a lot of choices to be made that day, we were both happy how it turned out!
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone It looked amazing at the end! After I finished the video I went to my ports and started planning some cuts.

I like the videos with other people of your bonsai group
Been binge watching you all evening all ready! Thanks for more great stuff

Now that is a weeping PA. Nice video. Fun to watch you help a fellow bonsai enthusiast work on his tree.

Thank you Walter, the process was accident free! I haven't seen Joey in a while, I hope the tree is OK!
Oh, those tons of cuttings! I hope you rooted them all! Nice video :)! The tree came out beautiful in the end.
That Portulacaria afra makes mine look like babies. Looks like a good start. I wish i could have one that big, but no room for it in the winter.
I'd love to see an update on this. Great work!
Very nice! Many good cuttings there also. A lot of big decisions and major cuts made in this first styling !
Your vids rock. Would love an update on the ficus growing on wood plank and update on the money tree.
Beautiful tree Joey, great work both of you!
Glad you liked the outcome, Joey had a great vision for the tree!

That was really huge portula afra, and very daring decisions to chop off those big branches 👍👍👍 please do share its progress vedios
I was half expecting a stump with one branch at the end. ;)

Can’t wait to see it in it’s bonsai pot.
It turned out really well, I think Joey picked a good tree to work on!
loved this video, very relaxing. The tree is really looking good at the end

Great work with those pruning shears you two. 👍👍
Just curious when the repotting and root work are scheduled for.
Great tree! So many great cuttings too! Great end result.
Thank you UR! Lots of cuttings for the club!
Great job Nigel! 👍👍
That a great find! You got some great starts off it too.
Enjoyed watching the two of you style this tree. Well done!
Thank you Pat, we had a fun day working on the tree!
Great video Nigel and tree Joey!
Your a huge inspiration
love the portulacaria afra! I have a few bonsai, keep it up! :)

Thats a beautiful tree!
I hope to see it again, Joey says it got attacked by squirrels, but it is doing well and healing!

amazing transformation, please update later!
I'm sure we'll get updates, Joey takes good care of his trees!
I love this one!!
This is such great info..love Jade Gardens too…just got a small one at my local nursery and trying my hand at bonsai..thanks so much
I just repotted a big variegated jade. It made me so nervous. I think its nearly twenty years old
Very nice ! I like your style so much
Nice one brother ❤️❤️
Love from india👍
40:21 was the cut that made the jade a one of a kind bonsai. Good job to you both.
It unified the branch style to be consistent over the tree! I was very excited about the cut!
Love the vids
Thank you Isaiah!
nice video with your friend
Good job, now it really is an awesome tree.
It took a lot of cutting and a lot of difficult decisions!
wow huge jade. beautiful.
I haven't seen Joey since this video, hopefully all is well.

I think Joey expected a reduction, maybe not as much as we eventually did, but he was happy with the outcome...(I hope)!
@@TheBonsaiZone I am sure he is the tree looks great!
Very nice
You should try to make a bonsai with a Flamingo Japanese willow/dappled willow.
this was really fascinating, I really really like that tree! I may just need to make a visit to my local nursery 😅
I'm not allowed to go to nurseries anymore!
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone I'm not allowed to collect seeds anymore! 😅
I wonder how this filled out after the drastic cuts years ago? Any updates?
Good teacher
I am very curieus how Joeys bonsai has developed after two years nog. I hope we get an update. someday .
Joey told me it got attacked by a squirrel and needs some time to repair the trunk, hopefully we'll see it again soon!
Good work
xD hmmm now im going out side to eat one . lol
Hey....Nigel...I have a few portulacaria afra bonsai attempts....How can I show them to you and have some suggestions?
Any suggestions plz
I love these videos. Is the potted plant in the background on the left, a maple of some sort or a pot plant? Either way, it looks healthy.
Hi Nigel please I have a question is there anyway to have a black or white Japanese pine indoors with a GROW LIGHT 💡 PLEASE reply thank you
Mike G...
I don't think so, they need the fresh air and the seasonal changes to be healthy. You might keep one alive for a year, maybe two, but that would be the limit.
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone thanks for the reply really appreciate it
Lucky Joey!
Nigel, you should raffle off an opportunity to work with you. Proceeds to charity!
👀 Nice.
The tree is doing well, I talked to Joey recently!
Good job
Can I ask why u carve back the stub ?

Any updates available..?? 😟
I was wondering what does a tree like this cost? before the trimm i mean. Cheers and great video
I think it was 200 dollars, but Joey got it for half price, a good deal!!
@@TheBonsaiZone thank you for your answer. Indeed a good bargain

I know this is old, I’m hoping for an update. Big cut coming up physically hurts me every time. 😂😭
I hope we can see it one day too!!
@@TheBonsaiZone will Joey bring it back over?
weeping willow style bonsai.
Greetings from New Zealand! I’m am in love with your root rake but can’t find one! Are you able to point me in the right direction to find one? Thanks
Can’t see anything as there are trees in the background
Should put a white/black back screen to make the plant at hand show properly
Root all those cuttings, especially the large ones!
Update would be nice ✌️👍🙂
Nigel has never seen a Portulacaria afra that he did not want to defoliate.
Lol!
Sensei 🙏
It will be interesting to follow the progress of the tree!
@@TheBonsaiZone Yea, It's always nice when you can find a cool nursery tree, and get a pretty nice styling the first go. The natural weeping is really cool for this Portulacaria.
Did you make/plant a cuttinhs from any of the removed material ? Could that top cut off around the 11:00m be planted as a cuttimg as is ?
Is there an update on this tree?
I finally talked to Joey for the first time in a year, the tree is doing well. I haven't seen it yet and I hope to get an update in the future!
Great video but please but a whiteboard or something behind the tree so we can see better
Yes I should have rotated the tree against the black background, I'll do that in a follow up video!

Eventually, Joey is going to wait until the tree has grown lots of leaves. We did pull the tree out of the pot and it wasn't root bound, it looks like it was potted up this spring.
Oh so Johnny hendricks shifted to bonsai after ufc eh?
I would like to see a better background so the branching is more visable .
Thanks Jim, I'll work on that, last year my backdrop bench was full.
I would've cut the trunk after the second major branch on the left 45:07 Just before the trunk starts leaning to the right.
