  • In 1940, four Catholic nuns from Orange California were assigned to mission work on a small island in the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. Little did they know, a year and a day later, World War II would have a significant impact on their lives and the lives of the people of Buka.
Trapped in Paradise is more than a story of war, crisis and rescue. It is the story of stalwart women and men, who kept their faith in God and people whatever the circumstances.
Trapped in Paradise tells the story of the wondrous and exciting journey that four nuns with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange took through the South Pacific and their exploration of Australia while impatiently waiting for a ship to take them northward.
It is a first person account, of their sometimes uncomfortable efforts to embrace a culture not their own, and the perils of hiding and surviving from a vicious war.

I had Sisters of St Joseph in my school. Unfortunately, by the 70’s , they had completely abandoned the habit when it could easily have been modified as Vatican II suggested

The Sisters of St Joseph. When nuns were nuns and dedicated their lives to the service of the poor and suffering while wearing a religious habit. Apparently , a religious habit did not get in the way of their mission of service.

Jeff Keeth Canon Law states that when a woman enters a religious order she is to put away her worldly clothes and put on the clothes of that order. She’s no longer ‘of the world’.

Giovanni Serafino back in the late 1980s I was in Seattle at Providence Hospital in the ER waiting room late one night when an older woman started talking to me. I don’t remember what led me to tell her that I was thinking about joining a traditional convent where the nuns still wore long habits, but she said to me “I’m a nun”. I had no idea she was a nun because she was dressed in regular clothes.

Bella Bella several years ago my young niece was looking at some old photos in which there was a Nun in full tradition habit. My niece asked. " why is that women dressed in those funny clothes ?" How sad, she had never seen what I call a "real Nun!" Why would any young woman today want to enter religious life and continue to wear secular clothes including airings and pearls and have a fancy hairdo, live in apartments and not be recognized by a religious habit as a sign of consecrated to God? It is precisely for this reason that the only religious communities that are flourishing today are the ones where the nuns wear religious habits, live community, in convents and observe tradition religious life. The sisters of St. Joseph, and all the rest of the communities that modernized are almost all extinct.
