Is this the future of Generator Power?

  • This generator supplier has created a hybrid generator container that houses solar, a battery system and a generator. A generator is at its most efficient when running with a high load, so for large parts of the day in this system, the generator remains off. Instead, batteries provide power via inverters like Victron Energy Quattros along with energy from the sun using solar. Only when the batteries run down to a certain level does the generator automatically turn on, charge and then turn off.

    Using the generators only when necessary to charge the batteries must really increase the efficiency as while charging they are not subject to the extremely variable demands that are common when powering loads directly. The mobility and ease of set up offers so many advantages while also minimizing the use of fossil fuels. Bravo! I love Victron equipment, wouldn't use anything else.

My solar provides over >99% of my power needs. I am still hooked up to the grid and I have only needed grid power a couple of days in the last three years when it was raining heavily for several days straight. Even when it is overcast I generate enough solar for my daily needs and my Power wall will meet my needs for over two days with minor limitations.

    1600 watts of solar output is not a lot, especially in cloudy Netherlands, not even enough to feed one household, I bet it will run the generator a lot to keep the battery topped off.
    Victron is quality for a fair price but nowadays you can buy inverters that also perform very well for ⅓ of the price.
    What i dont like their somewhat deceptive power output ratings, because most people don't know that a multiplus 5000 VA is only rated at 4000 watts continuous and are suprised when I tell them that.

    The photovoltaic panels on these containerized units provide only a trivial amount of power. Unless the power consumer has the unusual situation of their power demand going to very low levels for prolonged periods, that power consumer can get _essentially the same benefits_ as these containerized systems from using a common *Inverter Generator.* Such generators spin only fast enough to generate the power required at that moment, and use the inverter to keep the power frequency constant.

    • @jimthvac100
      @jimthvac100 4 місяці тому +2

      This is far more efficient than using an inverter generator that runs part throttle all the time. This generator runs at full power (where it is its most efficient) to charge the batteries. when the batteries are topped of it shuts off. True the solar panels do not generate that much power but these are big enough they will help. Gas or diesel engines are not near as efficient at partial load as one running at full load. But if your comparing a store bought generator to an inverter generator yes an inverter generator is going to be more fuel efficient. But this setup is far more efficient than n inverter style. It is more efficient because the load can be small and the generator does not have to run at partial load. only full load to recharge batteries as needed.

      This does niet replace a generator
      It’s to save fuel , up to 80% reduction
      This is because the generator runs less AND on a much better load
      So far less service intervals …

    I am definitely a fan of sustainable renewable energy. Your premise design is in my opinion rather sexy. I can't say as I am a fan of the incorporated generator. I think in the same space you could put additional deployable solar panels and install telescopic poles that could hoist some micro wind turbines. Thus eliminating the need to have a ready fuel source. In many situations especially a grid down scenario that resource is going to be limited if not entirely impossible to get.

      Not when the loads are small like a static cabin where only laptops and lights are needed. This is often the case and so it's best to charge batteries using a generator at its most efficient load and then rely on the batteries and solar in the quiet to power these low loads.

    First off, 600Ah of battery will barely run a small house for a day, let alone a construction sight, do they have any idea what they are looking at?
    The solar panels, while a nice touch won't get you any appreciable gain in real life use.
    That diesel? Generator is going to see a lot of hours.
    This is IMHO a "feel good about yourself" scheme.

    • @VictronEnergyBV
      @VictronEnergyBV  4 місяці тому +1

      Many off grid companies have huge generators running all day and night for low loads like cctv, laptops in a portable cabin etc. This generator can help in these situations. The offer a variety of battery sizes.
      Again if a site is running low loads but needs power, the solar is more than capable of keeping up with the demand.

    • @johannesboonstra6917
      @johannesboonstra6917 4 місяці тому

      The difference between a partial loaded generator and an optimal load generator is that the diesel is used 4 x more efficient. So this means that on a typical site the fuel consumption is going to drop with 75-80%. Which also means less maintaining , less fuel transport ,less noise and so on.....
