  • Fuming oak with ammonium is the best woodworking technique to get that antique look! I also show the best way to ebonize wood WITHOUT fire!
    There are lots of ways to age wood to look like its been around for 100's of years, but they all have their pros and cons.
    I'll explain why I use the traditional technique instead of stain, and why I think the vinegar idea is snake oil I include the best way to ebonise wood of any species.

    You deserve a lot more success than you seem to be getting Ben. I can’t fathom why work as beautiful as yours doesn’t get snapped up straight away. Great video once again and fingers crossed on the patron drive.

      UA-cam doesn’t agree with you, last year at this time my stats halved, this year the same again, less than a hundred followers a month, ad revenue isn’t even worth mentioning, view count halved too lucky if I hit 2k views. 😔

    I have the same issue with selling pieces. I could earn more pushing trolleys in Tesco! It’s all about marketing and nothing about the product. Import a load of Chinese crap and market well and you’ll be rich. Create a beautiful hand crafted piece and not have the audience and it will sit unsold or sell for barely what you paid for materials. I feel your pain. But we appreciate what you do!

      I utterly hate this throw away society we’re in, sick off it it’s a disgusting attitude all stemmed towards owning nothing and being happy where we rent everything 🤦🏻‍♂️ I managed to break the shoe on my mic over the weekend, the show is screwed on easily replaced, do you think I can get that part, oh they fix it but for 3/4’s of the price of a new one - neither of which I can afford. 😤

    I have said this before but it bears repeating. The stuff you design and make is absolute class and I cannot for the life of me work out why it does not sell - and sell for a premium price. I hope it all works out for you. All the very best.

      @@HewAndAwe Maybe not, but your pieces speak for you. And if I can remember correctly, it wasn't just that Chippendale was pretty good chippie 😀 but he made his name by being a first class marketeer. First to create a catalogue of pieces IIRC.

You guys use climate control homes, hence why you guys buy wood at 10% moisture content and we buy higher MC wood. I hope you’re having a wicked weekend Madonna X.

    I found out about the darkening the hard way. Gorgeous bog oak fretboard on a guitar, naturally dark. Put osmo on it and all the patterns went away, just looks black now! Which doesn't look bad, but it's hard to sell the virtues of a bit of exotic wood if it's all murdered out :) Don't think I'll ever be brave enough to try the tannin tea and serial killer tent set up though. I hope you're feeling better now the days are getting longer.

    • @ChrisFranklyn
      @ChrisFranklyn 3 місяці тому +1

      @@HewAndAwe I think it probably can be unstable. But when you're gluing about 6mm thick worth along the broad side down to something stable like maple or mahogany, with a metal truss rod and some carbon rods (if you're feeling fancy) then it's all good.

    Hi Ben, finding reliable methods of staining and finishes that you're happy with can be a long process, nudges in a new direction can help, have you ever tried potassium permanganate, it's not really a stain but an oxidiser and can easily age wood by a 100 years, mix with water, not much is needed, layer coats, obviously you're best to try on scrap pieces first and experiment with your preferred finishes. I know you're not a fan of water based stains but i think you would benefit having this in your arsenal of reliable methods, however if you do try it, check out the do's n don'ts of using it.
    All the best n keep safe
    Sean

    Sounds like the marketing bloke needs a kick up the bollocks to get selling the art ;) Getting the right buyer is tough, but so is getting a patreon audience big enough to mean much. Given all the usual channels like Etsy a crack for listing your goods?
