  • While CrossFit has popularized the notion that bodyweight pull-ups are the ultimate test of strength, this view often overlooks the significant benefits of assisted pull-ups.
As a fitness professional, I believe it’s crucial to challenge this anti-intellectual stance. Assisted pull-ups, whether using a machine or bands, are not a sign of weakness-they’re a powerful tool that can enhance your workout, even if you can already perform bodyweight pull-ups. By reducing the load, assisted pull-ups allow you to focus more on the mind-muscle connection, which is key to maximizing muscle activation, particularly in your lats.
This heightened activation not only improves muscle engagement but also contributes to better strength and hypertrophy gains. By maintaining proper form and fully engaging the targeted muscles, assisted pull-ups can actually lead to greater strength improvements than bodyweight pull-ups alone.
Join me as I explore the advantages of combining assisted and unassisted pull-ups in your routine and why dismissing assisted variations is a mistake.
