All the three players are great in their own way. However, Maradona is something else at the height of his carrier. Particularly, during the 1986 world cup in Mexico, he was magician. I haven't seen any player plying like that in the world stage and carry the whole team to victory.

Es difícil de determinar quién es mejor porque ellos también dependen mucho de los equipos donde juegan. Pelé jugó con genios en su Brasil y en Santos. Messi con un Barcelona repleto de estrellas y con una Argentina competitiva llegó a una final del mundo. Maradona tuvo su Argentina competitiva del 86 y el Napolés era un buen equipo. Es decir, ellos solos no pueden conseguir tantos títulos. Lo bueno es que los tres son sudamericanos.

Sur presque 20 ans (et ce n'est pas fini), avec son Touché de balle magistral, il émerveille mes soirées, apaise mes détentes devant la télé après le boulot. Des scénarios du niveau des plus grands cinéastes du 7ème art et des chef-œuvres des plus prestigieux artistes et musiciens, à la seule différence ; lui (the best) le répète presque tous les 3 jours pendant des années. A plus de 47 ans, j'ai crié comme un gamin seul devant ma télé, sauté, pleuré de joie et même réveillé mon bébé au sifflet final de cette coupe du monde. Avec du recul, je me moque un peu (beaucoup même !) de moi et de mes comportements enfantins. Mais quelles sensations de replonger dans son enfance et de recevoir autant de plaisir juste en regardant ce génie de Football... Si ça ne me fait pas dire qu'il est le Meilleur de tous, alors je serais malhonnête vis-à-vis mon extase, mon bonheur et ma joie de le regarder jouer. A jamais et pour l’éternité le MEILLEUR. I'm old (and fortunate) enough to have watched all these three players in action. Pele in 1960s. Maradona in 70-80s and Messi current. They were all great, geniuses actually! Very hard to choose but if you put a gun to my head...Messi because his competition now is tougher than before.

The virtuosity of Messi has no comparison. One must be blind not to see and appreciate his playing movements.
Even in this clip Maradona is well ahead Messi and that is true if you watch 2 hours of clips of both. You can see Messi is excellent but, compared to Maradona, just not as complete and does not have all the skills Maradona has. And Messi, no doubt, is exceptional. Just not as exceptional as Maradona was.

maradona played in an era that was perhaps the most brutal as defenders were all out wanting to finish him and the referees never protected them as much as the later years when they protected great players from brutal defenders. maradona suffered the most amongst the 3. he was never given any protection. he was kicked, fouled in the worst manner possible and no one knew the pain he endured for being such a talented player. if not he would have excelled even more. yet he was termed the greatest ever and i cant agree more.
