Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at Alizée with Moi... Lolita for the first time ever on Dereck Reacts. Never heard or seen before this new artist for me captivates that Mylene sound, and the video also borrows a page from her as well thanks to Laurent Boutonnat. See why I loved this one so much, a definitive hit.

This song was recorded when she was just 15. It became a hit in 2000 when she just turned 16 and was The single on the album It topped the charts in France, Italy and Spain, while reaching the top five in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands, all at the same time. She toured France in 2003, having one final show on January 17, 2004 at Le Zenith, in Paris to a sold out (7000) seat crowd. I attended this show. This was the LAST concert in her LOLITA DAYS, as she got married, had a child and took a 3 year hiatus from the music scene. Many of her hard core, loyal fans, especially from France, deserted her in late 2004, when It was announced she would split from Mylene Farmer. She was never to reach those popular heights , ever again, however Mexico of all places, adopted her in 2007 and sold out a few shows. She made several decent albums, post LOLITA days, but not as as good as the 1st 2, with Mylene and Laurent, backing her. According to WIKI her net worth is $50 million, but this is hard to believe. Her daughter is 16 now named Annily

As many french girls my age, I grew up with this song, I still love it today. Here are some facts my might like to know:
    - She grew up in Corse, an island in the south east of France.
    - Fun fact: the little girl in the clip represents Alizee's innocence, she isn't actually real, if her presence made you cringe a bit!
My other favourites songs from the album are: Gourmandises and L'Alize
I was smiling during the whole video :)

This song is catchy as hell. I remember when this charted in the Netherlands I hoped so desperately that it would swap over to Germany, too. After the 80s French songs had a very difficult time here. But Moi.. Lolita was the first French song to hit the Top 5 in Germany after many years and she opened the way for more.. Other good songs from Alizée are J'en ai marre, J'ai pas vingt ans and Gourmandises.

What was impressive is that it became a total massive hit on the international scene and has a legacy as a classic early 2000's song which is still enjoyable today.
The video was in a non typical French way, there is no Paris, no rich and elegant people. It showcases rural lower class people in a non sophisticated way, which is very daring to go to the international scene (when France does that, you normally get to see an Eiffel tower...).

YESSS! I had suggested this song awhile back in the comments of one of the Mylene reaction vids you did. I first heard and saw this back when I was first was getting into Mylene and like you I kept thinking how much of reminded me of Mylene. When I looked at who wrote it and saw Mylene wrote the lyrics and Laurent the music, well, then it made sense. The strings are so good along with the synths and lush production. And yes, it’s a song that you can listen to over and over. There are a bunch of live videos for this song from TV music shows all over Europe. Almost all of those videos are really good. My other favorite song by her is “Jai Pas Vingt Ans” (I’m not 20 years old). The official video is good and one of the performance clips from Fete de la Musique is really good too. Since you asked us to suggest more Alizee, here are a few more - “J’en ai Marre”, “A Contre-Courant”. If you want to see just how big of a hit “Moi Lolita” was check out the video of Alizee performing it live in concert outdoors in Amsterdam. So glad you got to this song (Moi Lolita), it will stick with you and you’ll find yourself returning to it again and again.

Hi Dereck! You did the right choice! Alizée (She's Corsican with spanish origin) is at the time a "Mini-Mylène". She sang what Mylène couldn't sing at the dawn of her 40 years.
She participated in Graines De Stars in 1999 on M6 channel and in February 2000, she interpreted a song from Axelle Red (a female Belgian singer) titled "Ma prière" (My Prayer) released in 1997 (not in 1987!!! lol). She was acclaimed by the public, which allowed her to qualify for the next show, and then she did not give any more news to the show's production.
In the shadows, Mylène and Laurent spot her and decided to produce a young performer together.
On July 4, 2000, Alizée's first single was released: "Moi ... Lolita" The title, written by Mylène Farmer and composed by Laurent Boutonnat, with a text full of double meanings and very present synth layers, until the very construction of the song and the aesthetics of the clip, signed Boutonnat. The single, which installs Alizée as a "Lolita", remains in the Top 10 of the best singles sales in France for more than seven months and she knew an international success in several countries ( Spain, Italia, Israel, China, UK, Russia, Poland, Austria, Germany,...) and became NO.1.
The video for the song was shot for two days. The nightclub shots were filmed in the Parisian nightclub "Les Bains Douches" ( a nightclub very famous in Paris), while the barley field and Lolita's house, visible in the music video, are located near Senlis (department 60).
It was the FIRST TIME and FIRST SHOT for Alizée, the little boy and the little girl.
Broadcast for the firt time on M6 channel On "M Comme Musique" TV Show July 26 2000.
As usual ( even for Mylène), lots of Remixes of the song exist.
You liked "Moi... Lolita", AUDIO link: Radio Edit 3'48 ( ua-cam.com/video/l-3zMgd4dqg/v-deo.html) and Single Version : ua-cam.com/video/6RRRi1nOHXc/v-deo.html .
With over a million and a half singles sold at sixteen, Alizée publishes her first album "Gourmandises" ("Delicacies") on November 28, 2000, developing the same themes of adolescence and the first sexual emotions.
A second single "L'Alizé" ranks No. 1 in sales in France, and has sold 700,000 copies. Link video : ua-cam.com/video/gRaRdAYO9II/v-deo.html.
The album Gourmandises reached 1,300,000 copies in France, and the last two extracts, "Parler Tout Bas" (Speak Softly : ua-cam.com/video/QouhRxPE_Po/v-deo.html, with envirnonmental sounds) and "Gourmandises" in 2001 (ua-cam.com/video/pvh-ieuM8yg/v-deo.html ), were both certified silver discs.
I advise you for the NEXT REACT "GOURMANDISES" (Summer 2001) which is in the same TEMPO than "Moi...Lolita": catchy, poppy, lots of synths, fast rhythm,etc...
Her second album "Mes Courants Electriques" released in 2003 (almost 18) there is "J'En Ai Marre", lots of strings and synths : ua-cam.com/video/G4LIM9VYhB0/v-deo.html.
An English version exists : "I'M Fed Up" ( ua-cam.com/video/C29FF2mleWQ/v-deo.html ), J'Ai pas Vingt Ans: ua-cam.com/video/B8uoyPZhuUw/v-deo.html and its english version "I'M Not Twenty" : ua-cam.com/video/EAzREwi0hEk/v-deo.html, both with lots of GUITARS!!!!!
These songs are very CATCHY!!! And finally "A Contre Courant" ( Against A Current) : ua-cam.com/video/H3Ioxh3OTSU/v-deo.html.
Do you know? Alizee is very known in Mexico, she has a big community "fanbase" over there especially in 2007 with her album (Wihtout Mylène and Laurent!) "Psychédélices".
The work will be qualified as a Gold Disc, she sang accross the country (two nites in a row she filled El Auditorio Nacion de Mexico, with a capacity of 10'000 spectators), played her own role in the Telenovela Las Tontas No Va El Cielo (followed by more of 75 million people) and multiplied the signing sessions.

Alizée Jacotey, known professionally as Alizée, is a French singer, dancer and musician. She was born and raised in Ajaccio, Corsica. She was discovered by Mylène Farmer, following her winning performance in the talent show Graines de Star in 1999. If you want to discover more Alizée's songs, you should listen to one of her "Une enfant du siècle" album's songs (maybe the catchy "Les collines (Never wanna leave you)". This album was a flop in France but the french critics of the time loved it. It was produced by a French Touch (electro) band and gave Alizée a total different vibe/style. I'd love to see a foreigner reaction to a song that didn't make it in France :D

Mylène and Laurent started working with a new protégée called Julia in 2019, her album came out this year with little promotion due to covid. she is more low key and not yet as huge as Alizée hehe. I love her videos for Sexto and Et Toi Mon Amour and the track Baptême en L’air slaps too.
Fans of Alizée, Julia and Mylène might like Nathalie Cardone as well. She put out an album in 1999 with Laurent while Mylène was working with new producers for the first time. It has some of the guitar + synths sound we hear a few years later with Alizée, but with more Spanish elements here since Nathalie is from Catalonia I think. Laurent arranged everything but only wrote the music for a few tracks, the amazing Baila Si and Antonio come to mind.

this song is a référence to Nabokov's novel Lolita i agree with you ! This is (at last) the voice of the victim Dolores.
The bridge is obviously an echo of the book incipit: quote "Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta..."
    Alizee is wonderfull !
The man in the video is a référence to the character Humbert, in Nabokov's book and also in Lynn's movie i think
    Thanks for your Chanel !

I remembered that I loved that song in the 2000s and then checked the web (#cough Napster #cough) back then for more of her and found "A QUOI REVE UNE JEUNE FILLE", which is a ballad and especially there thought "this ballad sound-wise, instrument-wise and arrangement-wise sounds like a Mylene Farmer ballad song and production, this literally could be from her", because I had studied L'autre and other albums back then.
Few days later I found the info: it is 100% the same Mylene Farmer production team including her.

It's so nice to see you react to music you're not familiair with, and also in a language that you ( and I) don't quite understand. This proves that music is a universal thing that doesn't always need to be understood..just feel it and enjoy it for what it stirrs up. Alizee was born on Corsica, if I'm correct and started as a dancer ( just like Madonna)
By the way, the sound quality is something very French..atleast I recognise the warm tones and synths that also is very present in the music by the duo AIR ( maybe a good suggestion if you haven't heard of these guys)

She simply smiles and asks for two hundred francs (about $100 US)....The song starts out with her telling you what names you can call her... then when she goes through the gate into the yard with mom on the wash board... just then the lyrics start to get very interesting "When Lolita plays with the wolves it's lola who bleeds" !
