My wife recently bought a 2011 ForTwo Brabus edition car and it drives so well to our surprise, I have been watching your videos since to understand the car better and get my hands dirty if something goes wrong. Thanks for all the time you put in documenting things for others!
I’m wishing you the best and really hope that took care of your Smarty issues. My Smart is a mirror image of yours, as I live in the states, and I watch your videos whenever they pop up. I’m sure you know, but your videos are awesome for us Smarty owners and your pain and patience in dealing with and repairing your Smart issues is highly appreciated!
You are a Smart Car Wizard. I really wish we were neighbors! I would give you all of my money to keep my Smart up to par! Thanks for your content and patience! Cheers from New York.
thank you as always, this is good info and hopefully this finally fixes your issue!! 🙏 side note, congrats, because i have NO idea how you wrestled that air intake pipe out of that gap 😂😂 i tried last summer (my intercooler fan needs replacing) and i just could NOT make it happen. ive bought engine lowering bolts to create the necessary clearance, thats on the list of projects to do this summer 😬
Es sieht so aus, als ob du den Fehler gefunden hast! Sehr gute Arbeit und schön im Video gezeigt. Ich hoffe, du kannst jetzt wieder problemlos mit deinem Smart fahren. Gruß Jürgen
Another great vid. As for my 0.8 cdi turbo underboost. I thought I’d solved it. Certainly it’s intermittent and better since I did the oil press sensor wire but I had to bodge it a bit till i get the new connector., I’ll keep u posted. I was thinking at one point stuff it.ill get rid but im not beaten that easily…. I’ll also be doing the sam on my next .4 off as well.
Hi Stephen, I am convinced this is the happy ending of this « 3 bar nightmare » … I think I am not alone expecting an epilogue final episode with the autopsy of this old shifter motors…. 😉 I have just Emailed you earlier this afternoon some information I have found in a french 451 workshop manual. It gives resistance values to check motor winding + brushes electrical continuity and sensors health.
Excellent, thank you. I’ll check my email. The autopsy video had already been recorded and went live this morning. Great to have the info for the future 👍
Another great video. You have the patience of a saint 😂. I’m always interested in the tools that you use, could you do a video on your selection of tools that you use?
Another very helpful video keep them coming. Without getting to precise I was curious about what part of England you live in it looks quite nice and I love the lack of snow. If you don't want to answer the question I understand a need for privacy.
@autoknight747 thanks for getting back to me. We just had a bout of -45°C weather here in Canada 2 weeks ago but as I always say we're one day closer to spring.
@@darrenmcadam2318 Now that’s cold! I’d really like some real winters and defined seasons. I guess a downside is the salt on the roads, rusting out cars.
5:33 Hello friend, the reason I'm looking for this video is because I also broke the hole of the fan that is embedded with the motor bracket and when it turns on the fan it vibrates and makes a very loud noise and I saw in your video that you also broke it and you tied it with a zip tie, I have the piece that broke and I want to stick it Your fan doesn't make that noise when it turns on?
@@autoknight747 Thank you very much for the answer, friend, it's exactly what happens to mine. I'll try with the zip tie and put some rubber between the strip and the motor support so that it cushions the vibration
Hi Auto Knight. You’ve been immensely helpful with keeping my Smart running. Recently I followed your video on replacing the brake light switch as I occasionally couldn’t shift into reverse and while pressing on the brake sitting at traffic lights, the traction control, ABS and brake icon would show on the dash briefly along with what felt like an ABS Pedal kick or ABS system restart you could feel on the pedal. But then you can drive along normally after those lights flash briefly. I feel like 70% of the time it goes into reverse successfully. Anyways, I assumed it was a faulty brake switch as those lights only came on when stopped and the occasional getting into reverse or drive problem. Do you think replacing this motor mentioned here would fix an issue if not going into gear? I’ve only seen the “3 lines” once since owning the car and that was early on in owning it. And turning the car off and back on got rid of those 3 lines. Thanks!
This sounds like a tricky fault and it will be really difficult to speculate on the cause at a distance. The ABS kick at the pedal when stationary is the weird element here, possibly hill start assist you are feeling? Difficult gear selection can be clutch actuator or a physical clutch issue, or the selector motor but can equally be in the SAM or a wiring fault. I almost thought reluctor rings at one point reading it but that’s more of an ‘on the move’ issue.
a question is there any mark on the gears that gives you an idea if they are in alignment before you fit them in the gear box? plus when you took it out did you put the car in neutral or does it make any difference if it is in reverse ?
I did ensure it was in neutral before removing but although the gear wheels on the motor are relatively stiff to move, it’s not the case with those they mesh with in the gearbox which move freely. I did my best to not move anything too much and although there are some markings on the motor gear wheels, I do not believe they are there for this purpose.
Hi sorry for asking but u seemed to know a lot about these. Iv got recently pluged obd2 scanner and pulled code P1700 (drag torque at transmition). However no engine light on dash or anything and car drives fine and shifts is well as far as i can tell. From info online people say its software related issue. Any experience about this? Or any suggestions would be greatful. Done fair a bit of miles in it since purchase without any problems. Plugged obd just bcoz bought it for no reason really i fount this. Not sure what to do about it… thanks
As always, great video. I was wondering if when cold it is normal that in manual mode I put third gear but second gear engages... Could it be the gearbox actuator??

My trick with the intake pipe is to make maximum use of the flexible section.
Great work excellent filming and explanation very easy to watch and understand every aspect of the job👌👍
I couldn't wait to see this video and I hope you were able to solve the problem with it. Thank you very much for your great work.

Wow, you have some patience! Great work and the commentary was very amusing (hearing aid beige 🤣) keep it up.

Comprehensive fix once again.
Which is good, the Smart would prolly float anyway!

I live in the South, so despite what our Grandmas would try to have us believe, it never really gets properly cold!

Been waiting for this video for days
You have a temperaure gauge! My 451 has a different dash. Didn't realise there were other versions.
Ah yes, they did away with the temperature gauge on later models and the fuel gauge went horizontally instead.

That’s the scoop for the intercooler. It has two pegs that locate into recesses.

Hello. Need some advice for my 451 2009, has some strange issues, i have a video that can show the strange issues, can you please help me?…
FYI your original shifter was a revision 2 👍
Does it shift in all gears at standstill? Mine only goes to second and and jams in gear when hot
It’s an automated manual transmission so when stationary you should only be able to select 1st (D) or reverse.

Hello, not something I’ve encountered to be honest. Does the code clear down or does it remain?
It clears but comes back within an hour. Had fluid change that not improved next going for a software update i think
Why did you change it ??
Would that motor stop it starting?? Cheers
If it failed in gear and it was not possible to select neutral, then yes.
Now you know you won’t throw it in the pond .
Above my pay grade 😂
As always, great video. I was wondering if when cold it is normal that in manual mode I put third gear but second gear engages... Could it be the gearbox actuator??
How are your knuckles? 🫣
I did mine without removing any panels but I drew blood 😂
