      I thought the same thing. Anish understood exactly what happened. And, we don't see it in this clip, but after the game, when Daniel started to make the summary of the game, Anish stopped him quickly stating that the moves that had been played had nothing to do with the result and were then irrelevant. I also thought that it was really a classy reaction.

      Technically I think he stopped the clock and shook hands before his time ran out.
      But plenty of losses in W CH were because of bad time trouble.
      Increment is recent invention and in old times it did not exist at all. Actually it is pretty good that playing without increment at least for first several hours is back.
      Result of chessgame was always about
      1 ) position on board

      @@cihanbaran5738 It is more accurate to say that he knew he had screwed up so he let his time run that low. It's not like he was actually blitzing out moves and flagged. And at that point, he still had 45s to make 5-6 moves, which is obviously easily possible (albeit with subpar moves). That time spent was simply to come to terms with the game and resign. It’s also a personality type. I don’t think Bobby Fischer would have thought the position was lost because he was a very very confident player
      I think the only thing holding back Ding is his confidence. I think you over analyze because he believes his opponent must have something better planned

  • @LtKregorov
    @LtKregorov Рік тому +187

    The problem is the downward spiral. Too many lines to check, time gets low, you realise it, then realise you have too many line to check, the first couple ones you check ended up not looking good so you know you have to look for more, time is lower, you realise you don't have time to think, but you have to and from there your mind think about the time and not the game, it becomes too difficult to concentrate, you freeze.

    • @LtKregorov
      @LtKregorov Рік тому +9

      @@Kodaira023 You can call that misevaluated. Sometimes you are just unlucky as you choose to look at several lines that looked promising but after spending minutes realize they are not. If you had picked the best one off the start, you would have saved a lot of time, most of the time that's what GM do, but they look at alternative line just to test proof the one they saw. i never thought i would cry cause of chess match, but the whole situation, such an important game seeing such a sensitive, kind human being as he looks like, bein frozen and suffering, while commentators trying to make him move with their words, even though they cannot doin anything. This short moment of empathy towards such a sweet soul was sad but also kinda touching. It broke my heart :( But Ian went through a similar situation against Magnus so he truly deserves to win

      @@caiocesar8410 Everyone said the match was over after the first loss for the same reason. Then he came back. Then everyone said the match was over after the second loss. Then he came back.
      I don't say he will necessarily come back this time. But we should wait a little more before sealing his fate.
      Maybe the match would be already done if that was against Magnus. But Nepo showed two times he is not 100% able to keep his lead. Both players are under lots of pressure (the match itself, questioning themselves if the crown is a real one, etc.).
      I'm not necessarily supporting one of them. I just think it is weird to say he is doomed when the same scenario already happened two times.
      We should just wait the next game imo. Let's learn from our mistakes and not repeat them that early :P

    In the after the game interview, he just explained how every move he thought of could be readily refuted. Thus, he couldn't find a way to make a good move, and make progress; while Nepo had a very secure K and good attacking chances with many of his responses. It wasn't an emotional problem - just a very difficult chess position.

    I think this is where Nepo's previous experience plays a significant role. He's been there before. Ding is carrying the world on his shoulders in a way. Last night i spoke to a strong player in our club (not a GM but quite strong). He said it helps a great deal if one can focus only on the game itself, disconnecting from all externalities, and that the psychological dimension is a big factor. Its more easily said than done and esp. when so much rides on the games result.

    Anish is obviously more knowledgeable about high-stakes chess matches than I am, but I don't feel like Ding "froze" or "collapsed" - the position was just so complicated, he was just trying to calculate everything and not make a mistake, hoping to blitz out the remaining moves once the position was more clear. Not good time management, but he was certainly aware of the situation.

    I'm in my 60s and used to play competitive chess from the age of 15 to 25. I used to get into time pressure frequently during my career in weekend swisses, this was before the age of digital clocks. Some clocks were notorious for being unpredictable - do you have 5 seconds or 50 seconds left? And increments were still just an idea. MODERN PLAYERS ARE WIMPS WHO DON'T KNOW HOW TO HANDLE TIME PRESSURE.
