Hmm. Other creepy stories in XIV, you say? Hmmm...
In the kingdom of Ala Mhigo prior to the Garlean occupation, the ruler was the Mad King Theodric. He was a highly paranoid man, and in his paranoia he consigned his very family to death and enslavement. Those he enslaved wound up being transmogrified into creatures of darkness and set within his treasure trove, held beneath the city in the Drown City of Skalla. Throughout the entirety of that dungeon, you are essentially mercy killing his entire family. I don't remember all of the details, but it was done in the pursuit of the treasure, so that the Resistance could fund the Ala Mhigan restoration effort. Alphinaud, Arenvald, and the WoL don't make a mention about the people the WoL just euthanized. Perhaps it's for the better.
In Ala Mhigo, in the present day, the Garlean scientist, Aulus mal Asina did horrible experiments involving once living test subjects. These experiments were done in order to make pureblooded Garleans capable of manipulating aether in order to cast magicks. Having succeeded in that simple premise, he was next tasked with replicating the Echo. In this, he also succeeded, but the procedure entails using over 20 people as, "supply subjects" with one "master subject" to copy the aetheric waveform from. This was applied to both willing and unwilling test subjects, most of whom died, unable to live through the attaining such power. It was done in a building known as the Resonatorium, and when you go digging in the area to find out about it, you see that the Eorzean Alliance has covered over 400 bodies in black tarps. Those who had their aether drained by experiements, resulting in their deaths, in addition to those who did not live through the imbuement process. A deeper lore footnote about the creepy factor here is that in Japanese the, "Magitek Pods" that are used in this process are "Madō Pods." Madō means demon craft or guidance if directly translated (spellcraft would also be accurate). This process was conducted on Zenos yae Galvus, possibly twice, as well as on Fordola rem Lupis.
In the Red Mage questline it is revealed that the art of Red Magic descends from the Mhachi black mages and the Amdapori White mages having to resettle in what is now Gyr Abania. Only through combining their knowledge of magic, and using the aether of their own bodies rather than that of the land, were they able to survive. From this, in present day Ala Mhigo, the Crimson Duelists were born, a sort of Red Mage special forces unit for Ala Mhigo. The unit was betrayed by one of their own, a man named Lambert. Throughout the questline you track down information on him and his shady kidnapping business, coming to find out that he and all of his relatives are bound by a high tier voidsent, which makes them very powerful magicians, though should their aetherial reserves get too low, they are inflicted with a hunger for aether which essentially transforms them into aetheric vampires known as the Nightkin. Story includes girls in refrigerators trope, another jaunt their the Gubal library to specifically look for spooky stories, vampirism of a sort, undead mages, mind controlled mages, and dark ritual summoning from the Void.

Whatever the overall tone of a game is, if it's in the "fantasy" genre, I do actually expect at least a couple of stray horror elements, mostly because that kind of comes with the territory. Fantasy typically incorporates folklore, mythology, legend, and even religion into its narrative. All of that includes "scary" things like ghosts, demons, and monsters. Not just that, but some even outright venture into the Lovecraftian at times! That's why I think it's such a fun genre.
“...that’s enough critically acclaimed MMORPG for one day”. 😂😂 That has literally been me on more than one occasion. Unpleasant surprises like that can happen in any game but for some reason they seem more prevalent in JRPGs to me. Sometimes I wonder if Japan has some sort of cultural aversion to happy endings. So many characters/stories end in tragedy. I’m a happy little dork at heart and all the suffering makes me so sad 🥺😭😅

This video made me realize how much lore i missed playing FF 14. Tho i don't play it anymore because of some self problems, i would love to go back to older dungeons and analyze everything

I remember Great Gubal Library, my first time entering it and reaching the end, i just was slightly uncomfortable, given the full backstory from you now, yeah.. no thanks lol. It also reminds me of the Titania fight and the whole song that accompanies it, not exactly creepy but disturbing to a degree for sure !

Sin Eaters in general are frickin horrifying. Pretty, pretty Eulmore is just…eugh. Ardbert and his party, particularly in the pre-Shadowbringers patch is horrible. Ascians-it’s always Ascians.

There's the story of O Poorest Pauldia, the sister of crown Princess Sauldia in Voeburt. Quite sad. And Gunnitt, the dwarf who became a monster wandering the seabed as a result of his greed. EDIT: Also Philia, the lightwarden of Lakeland was a prisoner of the House of Certain Durance who had the most unfortunate luck of being too close at the last attempt to slay the previous lightwarden, and turned into one instead.

You could do a whole video about the Monetarists ruling Uldah. Tiny dirty hands in gambling, tournaments to the death (in the past, reeeally), drug dealing, sex workers, human trafficking, children go missing all the time there or lose their parents and are living on the street. Gegeruju deserved much worse than he got.

Did you ever watch the Final Fantasy: Unlimited anime series?
Major spoilers here if you didn't see it and want to check it out for yourself....
This series had a childish "zany madcap" kinda feel to it throughout, right up until you get to the end of the story. Then they kill off almost the entire cast, including several major characters who sacrifice themselves so their lives can be turned into weapons to be fired at Chaos. First time I saw this I really didn't see that one coming. At least that gave the series the proper "Final Fantasy" feel by making me cry :D

I had to play catch'up my whole time with FF14 and never was able to give the story a chance. Such regret.
VTM-Bloodlines while dark themed is mostly hilarious. Then they just casually ask you to enter an old mansion or a 'film studio' and the tone is wildly different.
While maybe not getting to outright horror, FF War of the Lions has a very dark and extrastential ending, that wants you to question everything you grew up around lol, and occasionally just peppers it in
I enjoy when this stuff is sneaked in too. I'm older now and I dont always want to sign up for dark and gruesome themes. But when they sneak it in, I always really appreciate it.

I usually go in un-synched to read everything I missed after the fact, bringing patient friends when necessary of course. ^^
There is an option to enter to the dungeons without enemies (once you have finish them at least, one time)

I never quite understood the appeal of Doki Doki Literature Club. I remember hearing about its gimmick and thought "...that's it?" Have people such little experience with a game breaking the 4th wall in a creepy or disturbing way that they hype the hell out of this DDLC? It feels like it's just... streamer bait.

I did try to play it on stream but it took so long to actually get to the parts people promised were interesting that I lost interest very quickly. The concept is definitely interesting but I wasn't a fan of the execution. :(

I do really appreciate side stories that may not be integral to the plot, but they do so much to help build the world the game exists in. And I feel like darker stories in more cheerful games give the overall experience so much more depth. Milla Vodello backstory in Psychonauts is one that comes to mind.

So which FF game would be a good one for a noobie to start with?
My favourite one will always be Final Fantasy 10 but 9 is a very close second, so either of those.
I definitely would give the latest one (15) a miss right now because it's a little hard to follow with all the extra content not included in the base game.

10 is very good, especially as a modern game. Some solid horror too. Ive heard some people say 12 is good but Im just starting out with it.
7 Remake is beautiful but the story is obvious about being the first part of at least one more game so just be aware of that.

@@ProperBird Oh i'm sure there are many, look at Taipan as a simple game with no real consequences other than the authorities seizing your opium, but when you look at WoW, FF14 and similar storylines you have to add at least the smallest measure of realism to make it a challenge and seem real regarding the storyline.
Not quite the same thing, but you reminded me of one of my favourite games on the Megadrive called "Soleil". This game is so cute and happy looking even the flowers dance to the music, you use animal companions for your bonus powers (such as Chilly the Penguin to give your sword frost effects) and there's even a cameo from Sonic the Hedgehog who's sunbathing on the beach.
Then you get to the endzone and (spoilers here) find out that all the monsters in the world got there due to an accident and aren't actually evil. They were just viewed as such by the humans who immediatly attacked them. So you need to deal with the fact you've basically massacred a bunch of creatures who didn't want to be there in the first place but simply had no way back home.
Great game, definitely one to make a child think about the concequences of their actions :)

As soon as you said horror and ghosts I knew you'd mention Edda.....That story messed me up a bit lol. Especially since it's the WoL fault.
It's a very early story as well so it really comes out of left field for a lot of newer players. ^^;
I remember the moment after heavensward where I was payinga ttention to the women in teh pirates cave....and suddenly realising why they were there and it was a very 'Oh no' moment.
Lol I skip a lot of cutscenes, but you tell the story better anyway. Thank you for video 💕
