    On that Ricoh, it sounds like the mirror is hanging up on the back of the lens. This is a known issue with later Ricoh SLR models. Basically, heat causes the adhesive holding the mirror to soften and the mirror slides down on its mount. You can check this by raising the mirror by hand and seeing if it rests in the top of the mirror box.
    It's sometimes possible to heat the mirror with a hair dryer (quick back and forth motion is recommended) and gently push the mirror back up from the bottom. If this works, it is advised to put a drop of super glue along the seam between the bottom of the mirror and its mount.

      This has to be the most helpful response I’ve seen on a UA-cam comment. Thank you for this info, I was unaware, and will try to walk it through the steps that you have outlined above. Great stuff!

    To clean battery acid from terminals I could recommend using a „glass fibre pencil“
    Perfectly to also reach the inside terminals.
    Works great for that!

    Thx - I got up off my chair and went and removed the batteries from my wife's N2020 (aka F501 here) .
    She has moved to her phone camera, as they do. Left two digital mirrorless sitting unused too.
    I'm sure your Nikon will clean up nice. The Nikon motor winder models have held up better than the equivalent Minoltas IMO.

      Thanks! Yeah, it did turn out pretty good, sold it a few months ago. Yes, my wife also exclusively takes photos with her iPhone, for convenience sake, and that works fine for me! She likes taking 'em and is enjoying photography, just with a cell camera.

    Great video! I got extremely lucky a few years ago and picked up a Canon Powershot SX110is at a local thrift store for less than $10. It was in perfect condition and I keep it as a standby camera, when I might not want to be using my Fuji XT camera. Even though it's only 9mp the image quality is great, especially the colors. Only downside is the lack of a viewfinder and it can be difficult to frame shots in bright sunlight.

    • @pricklypearcamera
      @pricklypearcamera  Рік тому

      Nice! I've used the heck out of my SX120 when it came out! Yes, agreed on lack of an optical viewfinder, makes outdoor sunny shots INCREDIBLY difficult. Thanks for watching, appreciate it!

    Just a quick note on rechargeable batteries. Do not buy cheap ones, as they can go bad very quickly, and you lose your money very shortly. They can also bloat and overheat and at times explode. I have used many as a Musician, and would personally only recommend Brand name or Interstate rechargeables. Interstate, I have found to be the most reliable, and they stand behind their product quite well, and are quite knowledgeable to deal with.

    The A3000 does have a great 20 MP APS-C Sensor, the 18-55 Kitlens is also good enough. Have it here - one of my goto cams for unsafe location shootings. 🙂 And back into its day, i paid like 300 EUR for this.

    • @pricklypearcamera
      @pricklypearcamera  9 місяців тому +1

      Nice! Yep, I've used the A3000 a fair amount, the 18-55mm is quite decent compared to some other brands kit lenses!

    I have a Canon PowerShot A480 and A70 that are dead but take AA', so I will try lifting up the posts and see if that does the trick. I also have a Nikon Coolpix E950 (from 1999) that is also losing good contact with the batteries, not just from the brittle plastic ledges holding the door in place (which are literally cracking), but perhaps the posts as well (the batteries put quite a bit of pressure on the door as well).

    • @pricklypearcamera
      @pricklypearcamera  Рік тому +1

      Hopefully that works! Ahh yes the coolpix 900 and 950 does have a design that results in many that I have seen inoperable because of exactly what you state- that results in broken doors.

    • @brigganthewolf1461
      @brigganthewolf1461 Рік тому

      @@pricklypearcamera Yeah, it's a good camera great for macro photography. Just wish where was a fix for these brittle plastic doors and (especially) ledges, because otherwise the camera is built very solid. Body is made out of magnesium.

    that second camera, the Minolta 3xi; my stepdad gave me his old one he had sitting in a closet for probably 15 years. he bought it new in the 90s and then when i got into 35mm he gave it to me.
    the grip on it is completely flaked off, which bums me out cos i guess there was some kind of grip sensor in it for some function.
    edit: i should add that in the camera bag for it, there was a "fresh" battery still in the plastic store packaging which had an expiration date of 2012, and somehow it still worked.

    • @pricklypearcamera

    I find rechargeable batteries not that good. Personally the AA ones I’ve brought are only 1.2V not 1.5V which results in stuff not always working right or not working at all.

    Minoltas should have aperture control via exposure preview button tested like next thing besides breathing. The lever motor tends to go bad. Not that often as the grip cracks, but that's nature laws and oil and rubber/plastics. Do you also test exposure meters afterwards? If they still calculate correct amount of light? I don't know why YT suggested watching this channel, but at least there is an opportunity seeing some weird 90' and 00' cameras everyone likes to hate. That's pretty entertaining. I wish the prices of the gear would be as low as here. Being in EU is expensive.

  • @userperryevents

    What do you use to remove or lessen "tacky" grips or that 'leather' that manufacturers use. I have seen various products but I'd appreciate a second opinion. Thanks, like your unboxing videos, I was not aware that people still purchased digicams and SLR's in the cell phone age. Also, how to get that rubber to look pristine (removing the white coating that builds up over time.

    • @pricklypearcamera
      @pricklypearcamera  10 місяців тому +1

      I use a brand called "Mothers" and the model is "Black to black" restorer. I have found that it works well for both getting rid of tacky grips, as well as removing the white coating. Depending upon how severe it is, it definitely takes multiple applications and a lot of wiping!

    Good day, how are you doing? I hope good. Do you ever get any Canon 5D classic cameras?? I had one given to me and had just invested in a battery grip and some more batteries and the sensor decided to die so I invested about 150$ and now the camera is dead. I live in Suriname South America so a long ways away from you I know for sure

    • @MichaelPLibby
      @MichaelPLibby Рік тому

      @@pricklypearcamera ahh ok, I guess there are less of those cameras everyday one brakes. I have never been to St Lucia, I once was able to go to Grenada and that was an amazing time. Its just different because in Suriname we don't really have beaches and that clean water. We have mud and dirty water everywhere it seems. The thing about the camera is that I don't have the budget to buy a new one and at the moment I am not sure what to do. I am part time photographer and also have a Canon T5, but I had just grown to love the Canon 5D and how its almost always in focus and then it was gone. Oh hey thanks for your reply.

    How do you avoid scamster “purchasers” when you’re selling them?

    • @pricklypearcamera
      @pricklypearcamera  Рік тому

      Hi! Tough question, It really all depends upon where you're selling them- While I see this very rarely, it's mainly for higher price point ($500+ cameras), and they mainly target very new sellers, so it's definitely something to be aware of. But once you've been selling for a while and have built up sales history and feedback, it's not nearly as common on a site like eBay. Definitely still see this on Facebook in terms of no-shows, etc.
