      I know right, it's not exactly faster than a computer, it's faster than a human using a computer.
      A true test of the speed, is to prepare the whole length of code that needs to be decided by the computer, then hit go as soon as you finish telling scott the question.

      +Francis in the Closet Ah, but then you have to compensate for how quickly he can actually say it. He's said before that when he begins calculating really fast, it's his speech speed which slows him down.

    You cant beat a computer, its just human reactions that let us down, if the machine worked by itself without us having to press on it, Scott would lose everytime.

      Frontpage Computers have the advantage of technological advancements. Give around a 100-200 years where we have computers that WILL beat any human brain. Not to mention artificial intelligence.
      There probably is a computer out there right now that we don't know of with unimaginable power.

      In just a few years, we'll have the 1st Exaflop computer, capable of a billion billion calculations per second. It would be capable of doing more math calculations in a second than Scott could do in a million lifetimes. So obviously, Scott loses out big time. Obviously any computer is way faster than Scott, as has been the case for decades. He beats out people using a calculator, but not an automated machine.

    I think the "he's faster than a computer" is a bit exaggerated. He's good at certain specific things but what he can do is very basic stuff for microprocessors that literally do millions of operations per second without a sweat. Still, that's impressive for a human brain.

      This guy deserves more recognition than he deserves.
      He did elementary level math, a lot of people can do much faster than.
      He is a joke in comparison to kids who learn to use the mental soroban.

    I think his brain developed that way because he done math differently since he was a kid and calculating numbers in his head. It's like brain workout.

    hmm, to explain this I would say he shuts down his eyesight to get fast math going on at the space where his eyes ussually calculate the position. It's quite brilliant, but that makes me think.. I think other people can do this too.. It requires focus to forget about thoughts and visual images that are asking information from the eyesight of your brain to make it work. So, when you see those numbers, you'll SEE 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9, but he gets those numbers from the amount of angles inside the shape from the original drawn symbols by the romans, he gets the information from a different place so his calculation is possible at his visual position is calculated. If you're able to do this on a even faster place inside your brain, which would probably be the calculation of the position of your muscles. Then you get the problem that you can't calculate at the time as you speak.
    For a normal person the brain is calculation at area 44, which I think is the place where your brain gives a boolean as result. It calculates if it's true or false and improves if needed. This is a slow way of calculating. If you know the algoritm is correct, then you don't worry about that. So you think faster. Using area 44, will not be useable for this task as it gives 2 results, you need something with more capacity, like the eyesight or muscles position calculation. Also, the brain will not be effected if you having an eye-blink reflex.

    They teach you to do math backwards in school. You read from left to right, but they teach you right to left. That doesn't make sense. You have to calculate the whole thing and keep it in your head until you are done. If you do it forward, you can write it down WHILE you're calculating. I wish they would teach the fast method. No wonder so many adults say they can't do math.

    so his area of working out is moved into another area in the brain (reflex area for balance, its like a noise we hear and then be able to work what's that type of noise instantaneous)

    Because he wants to revolutionize the way people first approach and learn math. He doesn't use his ability for himself but to help others possibly achieve at least a much higher comfortability with arithmetic (and maybe even higher level math) than they normally would have.

    Well, I think Scott would need several more years with these kids to turn them into mini Scotts. But I do understand what you are saying. If Scott can inspire these youngsters to find the fascination and the value of math as he has, then that in itself can be a gift.
    I could only imagine a world where kids get out of middle school with the math skills that Scott has. It would even out the playing field way too much. Some greedy corporate guys would find a way to dissemble it.

      E Bach Put the kids in soroban mental math training centres and they can beat Scott after three years of training. 15 minutes of practice everday, 1-2 hours of training at the centre a week.

    The reason why he does math quickly is because the side of his brain where it allows you to move your body (i.e. feet, legs, move arms) also does the calculations. Which is why it's fucking fast.

    As impressive as this is i cant see the practical part in this. I much rather have a degree in mathematics than a human calculator, math is not number crunching its all about solving problems and thinking outside of the box. Still good job Scott Flansburg :)

    If someone does a 6 digit x 6 digit calculation and gets one digit out, then that is not as clever as knowing 1 + 1 = 2!
    Because the latter is a CORRECT answer!

    Cube root easy imagine this scenario.
    87 x 87 x 87
    Remember all cube of 1 - 9 (much easier than u think trust me)
    1=1,2=8,3=27,4=64,5=125,6=216,7=343,8=512,9=729.
    So you look at the numbers before the comma and c which it is closer to, yo can't round up. So 658 = 8
    For the next digit look at the last number and remember this:
    1=1,2=2,3=7,4=4,5=5,6=6,7=3,8=2,9=9
    they come from the last digit of the cubes of 1-9
    so 658503
    658 = 8 503=7
    87 :D

    You didn't understand. In the video says... "FASTER THAN A CALCULATOR"
    Calculator: a device for performing mathematical calculations, esp an electronic device that can be held in the hand (by definition). The device, not a person who uses a calculator. It might be obviously faster than a human pressing buttons... it might take seconds for someone to press all of them. But it's not faster than a processor which makes calculations in nanoseconds xd

    How are any of those things bigger than this?
    And his gift isn't to be good at that kind of math. He's just very fast at putting a numbers together. His brain computes numbers that we all can compute, he just does it faster.
    There's a lot of other "human calculators" that are a lot more impressive. However I haven't seen if he has done any other more advanced math. He probably has done something more than basic math, but hey, I haven't seen it. There's a lot of fast thinkers.

    comment fail Sheldon Cooper. If the students or "stupid people" left the room and left the calculators laying on the desk untouched, you may be surprised to notice the calculators would not display the correct answers - ever. By design, a typical hand held "calculator" requires a human (with working eyes and fingers) to function or "calculate". At no point did they claim his brain calculated math faster than a silicon processor and they obviously would have used a different test if they had.

      @@gadgetboyplaysmc His love for math is superb and this comes from his goal of teaching kids basically an inspiration to be able to teach something that kids don't know or we don't probably know. His dream is actually teaching how math works and why it's like this. Do you think mathematicians actually asked and researched the origin of math better than Scott? Well you can say some actually thought about it andquestioned it. But they didn't truly researched it and figure it out. And some mathematicians just do their jobs just to teach and get paid, I'm not saying that most mathematicians are like this.

    If you insist on being pedantic, they could have said "faster than USING a calculator" but should have been obvious. If they had compared him to a processor, the equation variables would still need to be inputed somehow (requiring a human) and that would have been just as slow unless they cheated and programmed it ahead of time or they used voice recognition eliminating the need for manual data entry. But then it would not have been "guy vs calculator" anymore nullifying your original point. :P
