After a month of interviews and correspondence I just got rejected from a really great job in the arts this morning. This video helped so much knowing that someone I look up to us felt this feeling before. This couldn’t have come at a better time. Thank you💕
rejection WILL happen. It's important to keep trusting your skills, you could be the sweetest peach on the tree, but not everyone likes peaches. Which also means there is a market out there that would love to have you! Good luck on your journey, and when you're scared, do it scared. 💫
Hey, I’m a few years into my career as a graphic designer! I graduated at the end of 2019, straight into the pandemic. And it was so tough! I got rejected so many times. But you only need one person/place to say yes, and then it gets easier! Good luck!! You’ve got this!!!
I've noticed your videos have become so smartly structured and edited this year, they're so fun to watch! I'm not a professional artist but this is great advice for everyone, thank you :)
rejection does suck, but def helps us to grow as artists, after getting told so many times that your work sucks in college so many times, helps build up a thick skin for rejection in the job field lol
This video comes in the perfect moment...I have been rejected from 5 possible project in the past couple months... which is scary and uncertain. i always give extra on every project because I get excited about it and I want to show that I would love to work on it 😅
Always love hearing these kind of stories from big creators, it's nice to know we all go through the learning stages and growing pains! Something that I learned last year while working at an animation studio where I sat in on a lot of pitches is that it's usually better to not put too much work forward in the pitch because 1. you're usually not paid for it, and 2. if they see the designs mocked up to an almost finished standard, they might jump to a no immediately without giving you the chance for further development because they can already see the end product which may not be what they're looking for. I have always been the overboard type like you, so I was really surprised by this! Maybe that little nugget of wisdom will be helpful, maybe not : ) Good luck with your future endeavours!
I found this video so heartwarming, there is so much shame around rejection, and I think that is why a lot of people don't talk about it. So sad that you got rejected but thanks for sharing it!!
Lovely video as usual! Definitely solid advice, the fear of rejection can be so paralyzing but in such a sweet way, you've reminded of the value in at least trying. Also your hair is so gorg here, and I'm sure the cut is even better! Wishing you well!
Yes!!!! I feel like the best stuff is made when we're carefree - being fearful is not being carefree haha!!! I actively have to chase this though - ofc it's easier said than done!
ywy thank you for this video, although I would have seeing this creepy story with your illustrations, the designs looked sick!! but it's true that we tend to forget that "bigger" names in the industry also go through obstacles and rejection! Rejection will be ten times better than not trying at all and not giving yourself any chances, the irony is im too scared of my imposter syndrome to try out anything but it also means that i dont go anywhere!! I feel cheered on to start trying more now!!! Also please a podcast , PLEASE!! I hope you have a fantastic rest of the week!! (and you too reading!! also YOU SHOULD ALSO TRY TO GIVE YOURSELF CHANCES IF YOU DONT!!)
trying to get into illustrating professionally, so thank you for sharing these insights and going through a really specific example! would love to see more content like this. looking forward to the theatre project video!!
This is a great video, thank you for sharing! I have definitely suffered anxiety about putting my work out there, I think I still do a bit. That's why its taken me so long to really pursue my dreams as a full time artist. Knowing other artists I admire (dat be you!) have experienced some rejection like I have definitely reduces the resistance to just keep trying.
omg literally yesterday I didn't pass my painting jury in my second year of studying it! and now I'm gonna change majors to drawing-printmaking, thanks for this video!! it came at exactly the right time
thank you so much for sharing this from such a positive light, I loved how you were so transparent about how you reflect on these kinds of rejects to make your own work better! I also loved seeing a little bit more of your project process - this is a part I'm really struggling with as I'm self-taught and don't know what is a good routine to follow with project to like draw up briefs, research and present ideas to clients. I would LOVE if you could do a video that dives into that part of your process a little more 🥰
thank you for this video! I have been trying to look into jobs in Australia for the past few months and did not have the courage to send in any resume because I was so afraid! I definitely will try to find more tonight after watching this video. Thank you for sharing!!
“Next time what I would do would to be. BE CHILL” That made me laugh so hard 😂😂😂 Thank you so much for sharing Sha’an. Such a great message and video. Loved watching your process and you explaining it just made it even more special.
No! That's something I wanted to speak about that I forgot to mention - thank you for reminding me! Publishing is the only industry that I've experienced free pitching - I know it existed when I was working as a designer (apart of an agency). Not sure if it's normal tbh because other than my own books I've pitched for projects 2-3 times. This is another reason just to do what's asked rather than go overboard. However I fell in love with the story and really wanted the job - as I mentioned that I had unmanaged OCD at the time which I think contributed to me going overboard. I think if I got the same brief today I would restrain myself 🤣
This video was so encouraging!!! ❤ I’d love for you to do a video on making work as a illustrator for a portfolio, specifically in mind of people who may not have any ‘portfolio’ pieces. Would you do for example, two book covers, and some character illustrations? What wouldn’t you include? How long would you give your self to make each piece or the portfolio it’s self? I know this has a lot to do about what kind of illustrator you are, but it would be so amazing to hear your perspective on it c:
This was so valuable and interesting to watch. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience and past work. Looking forward to your Sidney Theater - project vlog! Sounds very interesting. In regards to possible video's to make...when are you and Rocket going to have a "Draw this cartoon from memory" again? I always love those! Hope you are keeping well :)
I’ve learnt that rejection isn’t a bad thing. It sucks but it’s nowhere near the level of working on a project, getting close to finalising the work and then the client moves on without you due to creative differences. That is a real kick in the teeth. Got paid for it but it sucks because the longer you work on something the more you want to see it in the world.
This is why we need KILL FEES. Glad you got paid! Bummer the project didn't finish. Could you still share it without any of the client's details in the work?
Thank you for making this video. I am a graphic designer and it has been a week of rejection for me! I also do way more work than I am asked to do because I am a perfectionist too ;\ The marketing team at the company I work for are not nice at all about telling me that they don't like anything I do. It's tough because they don't give proper briefs for projects and I am not invited to the meetings about the projects. Usually, I'm just briefed verbally by a third party and given very little information to go off. When I ask questions I get nothing back but it's still my fault when I don't get it right because I should be able to read their minds! I need a new job!
Just writing to say this was my experience in marketing too - maybe try somewhere else if you can! It can be really degrading working with people who treat you like this.
I saw or heard a thing once about not putting stuff in your portfolio if it’s not how you actually usually like to work (because if people see it and want that vibe, it’s going to contribute to the *struggle*). Maybe it was Anoosh Syed who said it? But anyway, the thing that stinks about that is the majority of the work I’ve done for money is not what I’d actually like to do in the future. I guess that makes posting personal stuff more important!
Yes! Only put in the work you want to receive!!! Generally clients will book you based on your portfolio and if you put work you don't like in it they may use it as a reference or want you to go that direction which will then get you more of that work. Only share the work you're proud of or wanna continue to make !
I think looking at the illustration that was chosen for the book is interesting! You can see that the illustrator that got picked was really talented (so you "lost" to a worthy opponent) as well as getting an idea of what the author chose compared to their description of what they wanted. Obviously the final pick can just come down to personal taste though!
I loved the designs so much! Thanks for sharing this, it’s nice to hear about other people’s rejections and understand the process. Also I love the jumper 😊💙💛
I'd love a video on work/life balance and I'm also interested in how to keep a career as a creative feeling fresh and exciting over the years! I just garduated from studying design and illustration and am about to embark on being a full-time creative :)
Actually, it IS that bad. I was never afraid of rejection until I started getting rejected. Now each subsequent rejection is harder than the last and it's like my whole life has been a lie.
Hmm.. I guess it really depends on the pressure of needing the job too. It would be devistating to lose a job that is the difference between being able to pay your bills or not. And a few rejections in a row would definitely amplify the feelings. I was lucky that this brief was sandwiched between other projects. Hope you land something soon!
Thank you so much for this video!! It could not come at a better time, having just graduated from Illustration at Uni and being filled with terror whenever I submit job applications/portfolio for freelance work 😵💫
