Oh hey there little bean, watcha doing all the way down here?
Separating the artwork into layers when doing it traditionally is super genius :o It takes away the pain of having to work in the strict flow of going from background to foreground lol, I know I always end up forgetting details I should have added and then not being able to go back to it properly. It was really delightful hearing you talk about your process and memories of making "Bandits" :D
As someone beginning the process of making a picture book, this is so well timed!
@furrylittlepeach - if you wanna switch to more lightfast options for original works, but keep a similar pencil feel to what you currently use, I recommend these swaps…..
1. Prismacolor (softer) -> Derwent Lightfast
2. Polychromos (firmer) -> Caran D’Ache Luminance
The Holbein pencils have a delicious velvet feel, kind of between the textures of Polychromos and Prismacolor, but I don’t know about their lightfast-ness.
do the polychromos bloom as much as the prisma color, in your experience?
@@creekkidart7554 lachri fine arts youtube may help you with this, i believe they have less bloom. Just search her channel and she explains why she switched from prisma to poly
@@creekkidart7554you didn't ask me, but no. 😂 Polychromos have little to no bloom.
@@thinkerdreamersketcherspy thanks for posting this! I definitely came to the comments for this answer 😅
It’s nice to see how much of it was done in an analogue way, even if it comes with challenges in putting it all together digitally.
Very interesting look behind the scenes! Doing a picture book would be so cool.
As for the Prisma bloom, you can remove it any time it appears. Pain in the backside, but worth it if you love working with them and the colour palette suits you.
Or you could varnish the drawings so the bloom stops.
You can fix wax bloom on a piece by carefully blowing warm air on it with a heat gun or using a heat table. There’s video tutorials for that. Then seal the work with a spray fixative or varnish for colored pencil and it will prevent future wax bloom.
I love that you created these pieces traditionally and at such a big scale ❤
Ahh bandit !! We love a throwback!! I love seeing the process of books! Also as someone who works digital im always in awe with the scale of your work before its made as a book❤️ those spreads were gorgeous! Yes i agree haha perfect!! The blooming of pencils is a bit scary but its cool somehow to see the difference! The feeling of seeing your art and seeing it as an actual book must be so incredible! Such a dream❤️ it's very inspiring! I can't wait for shelves to have many many new sha'an books!!
This is such an incredible video! Thank you so much for letting us peak into the book illustration process. I am going to school for illustration in hopes of doing children’s books as well! 🩷🩷🩷
Would love to see how you layered all the separate elements together and edited them - amazing video!! ❤
I absolutely love seeing the originals and hearing you describe pieces of your process.
Gosh I just adore you, Sha'an! Forever inspiring. (Also LOVE that you're repping Leigh with that sweatshirt
This was phenomenally insightful
i remeber when I started following you that you were working on Bandits. Such a great throwback! Love it so, so much :)
This was very exciting!!!
this was so fun to see!
Everything about this was magical, thank you for the behind the scenes peek!
Love it so much! I love seeing roughs to final piece and it's wonderful❤
Thank you so much for sharing your process. Seeing that you adopted both a traditional and digital approach to your storybook has now given me more confidence in illustrating my own writing ❤
Could you do this for zoom?
this was really interesting to watch, thanks so much for sharing!
This is my most favourite video so far! It's so cool and interesting to see the whole process and it's really inspirational. I don't know how you haven't framed some of those originals in your space!! They're all so gorgeous, just bloody love ya and your work!! Thank you for sharing your journey with us
i’d love to know more about making picture books! i’m curious about the digital process. ie editing between different software programs ie procreate, photoshop, indesign. Just like the workflow is interesting considering how it all starts off analog. Awesome video :)
I remember you working on that forest spread years ago and was just so impressed at how big the painting was. Love seeing all the spreads together and hearing the process! 💕
Love seeing your layout & cinematic skills EVEN MORE in this one!!!🙌
My FAVOURITE VIDEO SO FARRRR ❤❤❤❤
I ordered your books for my daughter she loves them but her favorite is Bandits for sure.
This is some really beautiful and atmospheric work here. Really enjoyed your talk about it.
Oh, this is cool seeing the behind the scenes 😮
That was fun! Thanks for sharing. :)
Really cool to watch, thank you! 💕
Your artwork is so vibrant
So so cool Sha'an! 😍
You are just casually chatting about this book but the story, the characters, the art 😍🔥🔥🔥. Soo good!!!
Keep posting. I’ve learned soooooo much from you after a disastrous self publishing experience.
So much hard work ❤ love the bandits. So talented ♥️Hugs from LA
I just bought this book this week for my nephew! What are the chances! So lovely to see how it all came together 🩷
Thank you for sharing your artwork! I enjoyed seeing how you did the sketches and to hear how you combined them digitally.
I also think it would be interesting to see your draft sketches. Seeing how your thought process worked and how you got to your artwork in the end, I think would not only be insightful but also motivating - because it shows that a person's first ideas are rarely what the end product looks like. When we (unpublished authors 😅) look at the end product/artworks, it's easy to think we'll never get to that level. But this is an unrealistic way of thinking, beacuse we are unaware of the drafts that came before. I think sometimes the world forgets professional artist don't always get their art work right from the start. So it's good to be remind of that. Everything is part of the process, no matter how painful the first sketches are😊
cool to see!
This was very inspiring to watch! I hope that one day I'll be able to make something like this as well
It is sooo interesting to watch you revisit your work!! I love the illustrations you made for your picturebook! And I love how you work in such big format pages! (I usually work super tiny scale and I'd love to start working on bigger spreads!)❤ Would looove to see you do this same revisiting with Zoom! if that is something you would like to do!! ❤❤
Are you going to do another cheat sheet for this years peachtober? It was really helpful last year!
Yup!!!! It'll be up in the next few days!
This is amazing ! I've been looking into making my first picturebook as well. How big are the artwork sheets you used ? Thanks :)
Amazing video and drawings 😊😊😊
another vid!!!!
How do you scan big drawings as those ones?
Where can I buy Bandits?
11:18 😂
What paper did you use?
@furrylittlepeach PLEASE RESTOCK HARDCOVER VERSIONS OF BANDITS AND ZOOM! these books are so precious! I bought the hardcover and have been buying multiple paperback versions for my friends baby shower gifts! Love all your work 🧡🧡🧡
Hello angel! I've ordered a few but there are no store drops in sight and i can't have the store open all year round because I just dont have the capacity to pack orders BUT can you ask your local bookstore to order it in? I know you can do that in AUS and potentially UK so maybe can elsewhere? Zoom only has paperback copies left with my publisher all hardcover are gone! - and bandits was only released in hardcover so they're definitely still avails!
Sha'annnn! I LOVE your content, your art and your videos (can't wait for the peachtober and to see your amazing ideas for this year!!😍) But i have to say: it is really difficult to follow what you say (meaning the speed)... i already tried to slow with the option from UA-cam, but then it gets mega slow... please help the followers that love you but are non-native english speakers ❤️
Hello, I've been trying to get my hands on both your books since forever to gift for a kid I know (as well as the kid in me😏) through the physical barnes and noble. They've told me multiple times that they were going to have it shipped from their warehouse. Each month that I went back to them, they'd have to reorder stating there's an issue with the supplier. How can I get my hands on these? I'll be sending this question to the email that you always reference as well. Thanks in advance.
Mark Hoffman mentioned being able to get Bandits from Abe Books :-) hope this helps!
Can I still buy Bandits somewhere in Europe? 💞💖
I know my publisher is sending to sellers in the UK! can you ask your local bookstore / book chain if they can order it in and let me know how you go??? I think u can avoid shipping fees that way!
What publishing company do you go through
My books were published by Hachette Australia :-)
Thank you so much I love your UA-cam channel
