1979, The very first concert I was allowed to attend as a 16 year old. Marshall Tucker started first and The Charlie Daniels Band were the headliner. Looooong time ago but it was a ton of fun.
As a Big and Long Time American Southern Rock Fan of the Marshall Tucker Band, I Enjoyed Watching your Classical Flutist Teacher Reactions of Flute Playing during the Hit Song, Heard It In A Love Song.
Hello Heline! My favorite beautiful flutest. The Marshall Tucker Band is such a fun band to see in concert. I've seen them about a dozen times over the years.
Thanks for featuring the Marshall Tucker Band. It was the first time I remember hearing the flute showcased as a lead instrument. Jethro Tull was the second. I agree with the other commenters in that a live recording doesn’t do Marshall Tucker’s music justice. I have also enjoyed your observations of Jethro Tull’s music and it has helped me to better appreciate Ian’s expertise as a flutist.
Well, My Mom texted "He can play better but He's too stoned in this video. And THAT HELINE, she's one smart Woman, and you should work as hard as SHE does!" You can imagine hiding the smell of weed on my clothes and hair was impossible in my house growing up. And NOW I have to live up to HELINE musician standards. Gee, thanks, Heline. HHuummpphh
I didn't realize this song had flute in it until now (nor this band). Though the flute parts (live) have one or two rough spots, it sounds really good as a complimentary instrument in the song.
Dear Heline - I've had every Marshall Tucker Band album for years and am very familiar with them all. Your summary is 'right on the money'. Another terrific presentation - thanks.
The F# fingering comes from the saxophone, he probably doubles. As I use the flute 1-1 B-flat fingering on the sax all the time, works really well when jamming in the key of F on sax. The mic is a condenser pickup that fits above the head joint cork
I saw MTB play at an outdoor festival about a year after this was filmed. They were outstaged that day by Willie Nelson and Leon Russell but overall it was a good show. I don't really care for the embellishments in their live performances. This is one band where the studio albums sound best (to me). Good road-trip music.
@@HelineFay It is so much better! I do like Marshall Tucker and LOVE Can't You See but this song is not a fav at all :) Thanks for doing what you do Heline!
Saw in '75 at the 1st (& only) Ohio River Festival, 18k+ fans OUTSIDE the stadium, too (Cinci) enjoying the tunes & all that comes with open-air rock music festivals. Law was unprepared, unhappy & unwilling for UC to sponsor another music event like that. It was FUN while it lasted 💖🙏
I suggested this band in your Jethro Tull one. I used to be a guitar tech for the Marshall Tucker Band, not only is he a great player, he is a great person!! He rips a sax too!! Thanks, for the interest. Only three left from original band now! Jerry Eubanks is a great person too!!
Although I've been known to play lead guitar with the Marshall Tucker Band occasionally myself, I've never played the flute with them -- even though I could, since I learned the flute parts to so many of their songs over the years when I was working on how to use a flute and other woodwinds in a band like this one. I'd guess that the flute player, Jerry Eubanks, uses his middle finger for the F# because he was primarily a sax player, and that's how it's done. As far as electrifying his flute, Eubanks was most likely using a Barcus-Berry 6100 Flute pickup; it was an industry standard for a long time in there. Keep 'em coming!
Have to admit that that was one of the reasons why I started to follow, but mainly I just like to watch her reactions and ofcourse becouse I am musucian, playing guitar, but knoweledge is knowledge!
Me too. Flute is like viola, violin, and other fretless instruments, the sound can "slide around" a bit from pure tone. That can be good or bad depending on what the player is trying for. Most performances are imperfect, it's live ... and rockish
I always gravitate to any band that features rich flute playing. Just something about the sweet pitch of a silver flute. Thanks for bringing back some of my favorites. Tried to switch from clarinet to flute, but failed. Just can’t get my left arm up high enough to hold proper position. So I “play” the flute vicariously through awesome flautists.
The problem with classically trained musicians is you dont realize the in different styles of music its meant to be played differently and maybe even sloppy to the trained ear. I'm a trained musician so I know....
Very interesting take on the flute. how Eubanks joined the band is, he received the call from one of the members asking if he played the flute, he didn't, but he said he did because he wanted to play in the band, so Eubanks said " i practiced the flute for the next week" until he auditioned for them, and luckily got the job. he played saxophone to begin with.
Great video, glad you enjoyed the Marshall Tucker Band! I was wondering do you see non-traditional flautists using a different set of styles as opposed to orchestral or traditional flautists? For example a violinist playing a violin vs. playing a fiddle? Are these short cuts that they are employing actually more efficient for more upbeat rock or pop music?
Heline, if you have not already listened to this, you might be interested in reviewing this performance: Blackberry Smoke - Take The Highway ( Live from Capricorn Sound Studios) This was an historical event reopening the Capricorn Recording Studios in Macon, Georgia after being dormant for over 40 years. This is a unique example of a mainstream southern rock/rhythm & blues band incorporating the flute into their song. The song features a 1 minute plus flute solo along with flute accompaniment throughout the song.
Could you explain why there are alternate fingerings? I played clarinet, bass clarinet, Tenor saxophone, and bari. I don't know of any instances on those instruments where there were alternate fingerings that might have been a little flat or sharp.
Heline, my name is Bruno i am brazilian! and one of the reasons for falling in love with MTB was the sound of Jerry Eubanks' flute! Listen to the song Singing Rhymes, the flute solo of this song is beautiful!
It definitely had a few blemishes as a live recording. The studio version is well worth a visit with a much cleaner mix, more polished flute and tighter vocals not peppered by so much distracting ad libbing.
When they called Jerry Eubanks and asked him if he knew how to play the flute, he lied, and said yes. They knew he played the sax, so Jerry said he practiced three days straight on the flute because he wanted to be in the band.
Playing F# with the middle finger rather than the ring finger and pinky is how it is done on saxophone and the upper register of the clarinet. Most rock woodwind players start out on sax and migrate to the others, so will play using fingeringgs that they are familiar with.
This band is new to me, I love Heline's knowledge some people said that this isn't a good example of the flooter in the band ... I don't know why he wouldn't of taken learning yhe flute further to at least get the correct fingerings to get the best possible sound not just so it sounds good to an untrained ear. Always learning from Heline.

Ok, I have to admit I'm not the biggest fan of this song (it's way over played here in the American south) but the flute part makes it distinctive from other southern rock classics...well alright I've grooved to this track a few times. Nice reaction Heline, best wishes!
Maybe you should listen to it from a recording studio when they play live there could be many abnormalities. I purposely listened to it on a recorded song and it was much better.
