It was a great time to see the Beach Boys. Part of the excitement was you didn't know what songs they would perform. I think they also performed Warmth of the Sun on this tour.
@@marcus_marcus Brian wasn't there physically, because he didn't want to be there. But his music was still living and breathing, as well as being a huge inspiration to his brothers. Brian's spirit was very much here during this era.
@@marcus_marcus I would disagree, in that I think it was their best era as a live band... not as recording artists. That would definitely be the mid-60's with Brian in charge. But Brian was never a dynamic live performer and the rest of the guys (except Mike) continued to grow as live musicians on the road without him. Brian, on the other hand, grew as a songwriter and became a brilliant producer. They all had their strengths... but Brian was good on the road... but he was AMAZING in the studio. The band in the early 70's became a pretty incredible live act... despite Brian's absence.
I know right? Carl honestly had a good voice and was a Saint. Good guy and he used to sound so much like Brian when singing but you can hear the Carl sound and it's so beautiful.
I am 68 years old, an award winning author and have worked weddings, catered events and celebrations for over 3 decades. I have heard the BB played weekly - by DJ's filling their dance floors! Now retired, I have begun penning a very intimate biography about Carl Wilson! I can no longer read the articles and stories that skip over Carl! Yes, they touch on his incredible technical talent and angelic voice but I needed more! My well researched tribute will be about the man! His ups and downs, his dreams and disappointments. The loves and losses in his life. His beliefs and his gratitude and faith in the Lord. To be released Dec 2024. I'd love to hear from you! I pray for support and hope to interview anyone willing to share stories or info. ❤
I was at this show... it was called Curtis Hixon Hall in downtown Tampa right on the river... I still have the pictures I took that night , I was 19 years old
this comment is wild to me. I’m 20 now, and I share such a fond love for The Beach Boys. I wish I could’ve experienced them at their prime like you had
@doug tacey - We all would LOVE to see your pictures from this 1974 performance. As a baby boomer myself, I would be pleased to see them. Are you on facebook?
The magic of CARL WILSONS voice just send the hairs stand up. This for me was the best BEACH BOYS album. DISNEY GIRLS another brilliant song, not a Brian song, a Johnson song shows others in the group could cut it.
Did Carl ever put in a bad performance? (Apart from the notorious Australian episode) I've listened to many hours of stuff on here, and he's always perfect. What a loss to the world. ❤x
Saw them Spring 1972, Auburn AL on my way home from Florida to Indiana from high school spring break. Captain and Tennille were in the band then, BTW. They opened with "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and it gave me goosebumps.... 'just blew me away. 'Been a fan ever since :-) ...
I wish they would release quality recordings of more concerts from 1970 through 1974(the live album from the 72-73 tour is one of my all time favorites). I'd love hear a clean live recordings of "Surf's Up", You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone", "Here She Comes", "Forever", "Cool, Cool Water", "Big Sur", "River Song", "Feel Flows", "California Saga Part Three: California".....all tunes from my favorite era of the Beach Boys
totally agree. The box set shows that the recordings of the gigs from that time are there. Probably down to band politics. If there is a band who knows how to shoot itself in the foot it is The Beach Boys!
Disagree that he wasn’t necessary. They don’t sound like The Beach Boys without Love as the bass note in their harmonies. That said, he was (and is) an epic jerk.
Everyone can tell that Carl really sought to do his brother's song all of its brilliance and pulled it off. Surf's Up is one of the most complex and greatest songs that Brian ever wrote.

Carl was always my favorite lead singer and after Al Jardine and Carl had such a captivating voice

I heard this song in summer 1974 only once or twice, and never heard it again, till now. I had forgotten it, but it is still a good song to hear.
Pure beauty!
This sounds beautifully Mikeloveless.
Magic Transistor Radio i actually really like that part
Allowed him to put full concentration on his dancing.
I still remain convinced he was completely unnecessary

It may appear like that to you but he is singing on it. (Thankfully!)
;-)
Superb!!!! I could listen to this song all day.
Carl's voice had a way of dragging out a note in a way that Brian couldn't. Great example: "the laaaaaaaaaughs come hard..." @1:58
He also does this in “I can hear music”
I think it was more a stylistic choice than an issue of could/couldn't.
Wow! The brothers are trying hard. Crowd sounds rowdy... ballads are hard to put over, but they do a really good job here!
