This is one of my favorite Inkscape tutorials (and I've watched a TON). I love how well you explain things. I can take the things you show here and use them in so many different designs.
I remember when i was first learning how to use inkscape and illustrator in 2014. I came across this video and it seem difficult at that time. But now in 2020 doing what is shown in this video is so so easy - Keep drawing and practicing and you’ll get better 💚🤎
these videos are 100 times more valuable than those those 50 dollar books at the bookstore that teach you how to use programs that cost 1000 dollars because Inkscape is free. Plus its so much easier to learn things from videos. I looked online to see if there was a way to vary the line width. And all I found was posts that seemed to indicate it would be a nice feature to add.
i am a graphic designer and used to work with illustrator, indesign, quarkxpress and many more, i am off of work for 6 years now and can not afford the illustrator or any of the others. but this program is great! thanks for the tutorials.
Well its nice to have such a great program for free but its little bit time consuming as compare to illustrator i think in illustrator you can do it way faster and comfortably.
Mind blown!! I teach a basics inkscape class on the beizer tool. Mainly to help folks get images ready for vinyl cutting and laser cutting and engraving. I needed a little "flourish" for one of my designs. I learned so much in this video! Several new techniques and ideas. I will share these and of course credit you. Thanks!
Actually I just figured it out. Initially I was following your instructions and set the shape to triangle. Then I changed it to none. And changed the width of the stroke in fill & stroke. Working perfectly!
Thanks for your excellent tutorial. I was "afraid" to use Inkscape because I didn't know what kind of program it was. You make it look easy. Thanks again.
Thank you for this tutorial... it was extremely helpful... I love how you explain it, so simply... very clear and understandable... please keep them coming... you are an excellent instructor :)
You are really good at manipulating the nodes, very impressive! I learned a ton from this video, including things I had seen other tutorials for and was unable to figure out. BTW, that was magical how you made that leaf appear from the end of the spiro, I had no idea what you were going to do and suddenly a perfect leaf shape pops out!! Thanks so much for sharing, I hope you are able to share more in the future.
2:08 In Inkscape 1.0, you can still achieve that by direct drawing, or you can add the effect to an existing path using the “Spiro spline” and “Power stroke” path effects.
5:59 The one you’ve got enabled is “Even/Odd” fill. The one you want is called “Nonzero Winding Number” fill. The rule for deciding whether an area is to be filled is to draw a line from within that area out to infinity in any direction, and see how many times it crosses the edge of the shape (aka the “winding number”). For even/odd fill, the area is filled if the line crosses an odd number of edges, left empty if the number is even. For the nonzero winding number rule, the area is filled if the line crosses any edges at all.
This one of the best tutorials I have ever seen on youtube! I wish more tutorials for blender wear like this, Thanks so much. BTW love the accent, it helped me pay better attention. Keep the great tutorials ^_~
In version 9 the triangle in / out does something different. You'll need draw a triangle shape pointing to the left of the screen, copy it to the clipboard and use shape from clipboard instead. This forces a “pattern along path” effect -- Hope that saves someone a headache.
thank you! its certainly different in 2017 version. however i find its triangle to the right so you get thicker stems towards the left (that is if you're going from left to right). anyways, thank you.
I wish it was the way it was in this. I tried to do it the exact way you did and it wasn't working. So I read the comments that the new versions don't work that way. I wish they did. I like the way it just made the curlys.
Actually whatever end you want the skinny end to be on is the way you point the triangle. So if you need the skinny end of the flourish to be on the right then point the triangle to the right copy to clipboard and when you use the bezier pen use from clipboard instead of a triangle. Thanks, Chris your tip helped.
Tip: You can copy a horizontal leaf to the clipboard; and then, in the Bézier menú, set a high Smoothing and select the Shape "From clipboard" Result: You can easily draw leaves with the Bézier tool.
Thank you so much for the video.. I love these designs, I am thinking I can do this.. If you are interested, here is some useful criticism for those of us who learn visually. That would be to show us the actual buttons to push for the effects and then flash onscreen at the bottom out of the way the shortcut used for the effect. But it is ok if you don't want to do that.. I will survive. :) Thank you so much for taking the time to help us folks out here that just need some help.. :) I am in love with this program.
OMG making that in Adobe illustrator is so easy, I don't know, may be i am feeling easy but pen tool is really awesome for this kind of thing in illustrator.
Once you open the 'Path Effect Editor' there should be two things in the 'Effect list' - 'Spiro Spline' and 'Pattern Along Path'. Make sure that the 'Pattern Along Path' is highlighted then the options should be visible in the 'Current Effect' box just below it.

I'm just learning how to use inkscape and the way you explain and show us is amazing! So slow and well explanatory. Thank you!

Nice tutorial. Enjoyed watching it -It was magical to see you craft that piece of art !
An extremely useful and clearly described video. In addition, there are a number of short cuts. Several 'light bulb' moments. Many thanks, Davina
Thank you for this. Also agree with a previous comment - a beautiful voice, enviable enunciation!
