  • January first of 2020 I decided to see what would happen if I quit added sugar, after having binged on junk food for two weeks. In this video, I share my experience along with some scientific data and the benefits/withdrawal effects of quitting sugar.
After finishing the challenge I've decided to continue this lifestyle for the most part, restrict most added sugars in the future. Let me know what you guys think about this challenge or any of your similar experiences in the comments below.

Hello. I'm from Mauritius 🇲🇺. 56 yrs old. Here we grow sugar cane. Recently I saw a post by Jessie Inchauspe, biochemist, super interesting. Thus I can comment on ur post. U were right to quit sugar. Sweet things give us a feeling of satisfaction

Sorry. Continuing... So I realized excess of sugar affects ALL organs from brain, heart, liver, eyes to skin. We get sugar from sugar cane, beetroot, etc. Starch is a kind of sugar from rice, potatoes, pasta, roti, flour etc. Too much carbs mean excess sugar. Fructose is sugar from fruits. So too ripe fruits not good. Next juice in canned fruit or fruit juice on bricks is bad for health.
So sugar , once taken, created an addiction and causes ur brain to want more. But excess makes us feel tired, irritating, etc
      Thx

If you eat a sweet treat again, you will notice it is sickly sweet and you won’t sleep well that night. Sugar is a horrible drug and the food industry wants everyone addicted to it.

That's awesome! I hope to be that way too. I'm on week 2 without added sugars & ultra processed foods for the first time in my life.

One benefit I noticed from quitting sugar that I did not expect was:
I felt this sense of freedom. I started feeling more free from myself rather than being constantly in need of something, that something being sugar. I started feeling like I could do anything, go anywhere, rather than being a slave to my cravings.
This freedom, and what I would say is true freedom, is something that everyone should experience, cause it is an incredible thing that makes life feel like you're living it.

@@Danjacytes , I believe you should not deprive yourself of the simple pleasures of life. The key is moderation, healthy eating and exercise. I have reduced the intake of sugars and carbs like baked goods. I rarely drink any fizzy drinks or fruit juices or eat boxed cereals. Instead I add a slice lemon to my plain or carbonated spring water. For breakfast I eat poached eggs, avocados, sweet potatoes with grilled tomatoes and some cheese. Other times I will cook organic oatmeal cereal and add berries and nuts and fat reduced milk. On rare days occasions I will eat fried eggs with toast or make pancakes.
For lunch I eat grilled chicken with stir fried vegetables or grilled fish with either steamed or sautéed vegetables. I eat lots of different fresh fruits and vegetables.
For snacks I eat mixed nuts or bite of chocolate or rarely serving of ice cream or a cookie. I avoid fried and salty snacks like chips.
I don’t go to the gym or run. I just do a brisk walk daily of 5-10km depending on the weather. I try to walk everywhere rather than drive.
With this simple routine of eating well, moderate exercise and enjoying simple pleasures of life has helped me maintain my bmi, blood sugars, cholesterol and blood pressure.

This becoming a real discussion is very encouraging . I quit sugar 11 years ago. No one was talking about it then, and I lived in a town famous for making chocolate, and was married to someone who worked for the company. Candy was a daily staple in our house. So it took a fair amount of resolve. But I had developed several health conditions related to weight and stress and I was scared.
Within a year of quitting I was healthy, fit and more serene. I'm not even going to say how much weight naturally came off because that wasn't the original goal. I'm now a retired person and I look and think much younger than most of my peers. For anyone who's tried and failed, don't give up. If I can do it anyone can! PS it's true that sweet becomes almost sickening. I eat fruit instead and it's just right

Ladies, start quitting sugar on your period or right after because you are more prone to sticking with your new good habits during your follicular phase. Luteal phase is the worst to build new habits and particularly those that involve not eating the delicious sugar you crave so much before your period (been tracking my cycles for the last 9 years)
Also, not eating sugar really helps diminishing cramps and swelling during your period. :)

Update 1: finally reached the 1 month mark, I realized that I started snacking or having food in between meals way less. It’s been a bit challenging the first few days but it has just become the new normal for me
Update 2: 2 months in now and like I said before, snacking has become less of a habit for me, and lost a few pounds from (which is good). I've been getting some sudden urges to have something sweet but it's nothing out of the ordinary and I can keep it in check :)

it's no mistake that the foods from the States are sweeter. I believe part of it is because a lot of marketing research goes into taste testing prepared foods and results indicate prepared food products have a better chance of selling if they are sweet. There was an excellent BBC documentary entitled something like the Truth About Sugar that touched on this. This topic really caught my attention because without even realizing it, I have cut sugar out of my life. I have decided to get healthier after having had COVID and I got rid of all of my mints and candies and just plain stopped eating some things like breads, etc. I make everything from scratch and I rarely make any desserts. If something needs sugar, I'll use something natural like monk fruit or something like that. I have dropped weight without even having deliberately tried. I don't drink coffee or tea, so that's not a problem in terms of adding sugar and milk. I've been watching a lot of vegan prep on UA-cam and making these things although I am not vegan but these recipes are really good. And recently I found a nut recipe that's supposed to be used as topping on salads and other foods (like parmesan cheese but not). After blending it up it tastes SO GOOD and it keeps me regular. My dad died in 2019 due to severe type 2 diabetic complications and heart issues, Ultimately caused by poor personal care (I could write a book.) Like father like daughter, I was treading behind him and had been pre-diabetic since my early 20’s.. finally got slammed as a type 2 in my mid 20’s, close to when he passed. I UNINTENTIONALLY quit sugar. Honestly, I had been so new to the diabetic scene, that I just thought I was going to die like my father and unfortunately, I was there to witness everything from the time he passed out in my passenger seat on the highway to the time they pronounced him in the ER/trauma bay. I was TERRIFIED.. so my brain went into this weird trauma mode and I could not touch sugar. Any of it.. soda and juices scared me so bad that I just drank water. In 30 days, I accidentally lost 33 pounds just from drinking water more and cutting sugar, which accidentally reversed my glucose as well and I was out of diabetic AND pre-diabetic range. It’s honestly stupid how much change you see in such a short period of time. I was noticeably overweight and unhealthy and I credit the water as well, but after the first 10 pounds: INSTANT face lift 😂 people at work noticed a difference in honestly everything.. weight loss, my skin was dewy and less pale/ash looking. The biggest accomplishment for me, I specifically remember, the week after dad passed (lost 10 pounds in the first week alone) I walked up the stairs without feeling like the fat kid in gym class. It’s amazing what healthy diets will do ❤️

I tried my first month-long sugar fast several years ago (I was in my mid-60s.) I didn't have any "withdrawal" effects, and in fact, it probably took less than a week for my cravings to subside. I say this only because Ali's description of his experience might intimidate some from even trying. So the first thing I noticed is that once my cravings subsided, they were absolutely gone. Will power wasn't even an issue! Generally, I felt more alert, energetic and "lighter." However, when not fasting from added sugar and simply trying to limit my intake, I find it almost impossible to avoid craving sweets. I don't aspire to go a whole year without my favorite sweets, but I would bet that intermittent sugar fasts, say, several times a year, would be almost as valuable.

Great video, great challenge. I'm coming up to 1000 days since giving up added sugar and feel that I've got it to a fairly sustainable place with how strict I am. I feel I could do this for the rest of my life.
At the beginning, I didn't even eat fruit for the first few weeks of the 'challenge', as apparently going 'cold turkey' is the best way to get through the cravings and symptoms of withdrawal. I've now got to a state where:
    - I DO eat fruit, but don't drink fruit juice (I've only done this once or twice... and have since read up about how you don't get the natural fibres when fruit is juiced, which makes the absorption of the sugar (even though it's natural) too intense. Smoothies are okay though
    - I DON'T eat anything dessert-like (that includes sweet snacks). So, no chocolate, no cakes, no ice-cream, no pastries made with sugar, no puddings. I've tried making sugar-free cakes a couple of times... they're alright, but I generally don't feel cravings for that stuff anymore
    - I ONLY use sugar-free condiments (like ketchup), apart from my one exception which is cranberry sauce because I haven't been able to find sugar-free versions of that which you can easily buy. Plenty of good recipes to make it yourself though
    - I DO eat some 'savoury' things - like pasta sauces, bread, crisps - even if they've had some sugar added to them. I found that trying to avoid all of these things just wasn't sustainable.
    - I DO eat plenty of tasty savoury foods, including snacks - life isn't about punishing yourself. Find those tasty savoury treats and enjoy them
I DON'T want to ever go back to eating heavily-sugared foods. I DON'T crave them anymore. I DO feel so much better for it. Would thoroughly encourage everyone to try the challenge at some point to see how you feel, but overall to find a way to sustainably reduce the amount of sugar you eat and keep that up for life.

Just to let you know, I made my own cranberry sauce for the first time ever - it was so easy and so delicious and it had no sugar in.
Simmer cranberries in a small amount of water for about 20 minutes, added 2 large tablespoons of ground almonds, a tablespoon of dark honey, then crushed with a fork. Unreal! So tasty and better than the jar.
The colour was intense and I expect it has so many health benefits. It was delicious with savoury meals and also on yoghurt.
I know honey still counts as sugar but it was such a relatively small amount compared o the other ingredients, and healthier than shop bought.

As someone who has had chronic eczema since birth, one of the major reliefs I found alongside managing stress levels and environmental changes was having a healthier diet. After my eczema was at it's worst (which was due to highly stressful life events), I found that processed meats, ready meals, excess dairy (particularly cheese and full-fat milk) and ADDED SUGAR were my worst food triggers. After changing from my stressful environment, I taught myself to cook basic meals from scratch like pasta and soup, replacing what would be pre-made jars of sauce (usually sneaky contenders of added sugar) with cheap, loose-bought fruit and veg, tins of chopped tomatoes (unbranded and no added sugar*) and the small jars of herbs and spices that you find for less than £1/$1 each at the supermarket. Any meat I had were whole cuts instead of mince, and sticking to lean meats like chicken, turkey, etc. I would only buy meat 1 or 2 times a month though as at the time I didn't have a lot of money, and found what deals I could in the reduced section. Pork-based products like sausages and bacon are usually are high in salt and saturated fat, both which triggered my eczema. I also swapped from whole-milk to semi-skimmed and stuck with healthier cooking fats only - real butter (controversial, but great source of vitamin A and other benefits not available in plant-based spreads), virgin cold pressed coconut oil and either rapeseed (canola) or virgin olive oil, with rapeseed being the cheapest, mildest in flavour and most versatile. For things like porridge (oatmeal) where I usually put sugar or golden syrup on, I swapped to natural set honey - it tastes amazingly sweet but in moderation is proven beneficial and a good source of Vitamin E - good for healthy skin. I saw immediate positive effects on my itching and inflammation, and in 2 months my skin had almost entirely healed. I have had odd phases of eczema since, but never as strong as I had before. When I made diet changes (and began going for walks more often) I no longer felt as bloated and lost a bit of weight too! Just thought I'd put this out for anyone who suffers with food-based health triggers or who are looking for a healthier diet on a budget.

I definitely suspected that my eating habits and the stress caused it. Time for a change. Thank you!

Skim milk is worse for you than full fat milk. The skim milk will spike insulin more.

Thank you for sharing! I am a senior who was introduced to sugar as a toddler. Needless to say. it's been a personal battle. Your testimony has inspired me to try again to eliminate added sugars even honey, which I love in coffee or on bread and butter. But my health is more important to me know as I. get older to be here longer for my family and the work God has called me to do.

Thanks for sharing. I’m 2 months into an AIP/paleo diet, and this is encouraging. Glad you mentioned the 9 month mark being significant energy increase. Something to look forward to
