Each of the people at the roundtable needs to be introduced.
+sherry wallis Yeah, it's difficult with these roundtables with writers, tv executives etc. because they don't introduce them and if you miss the 1 second banner with their name on it then you're kind of screwed. I really wish HR would introduce everyone - otherwise these roundtables are perfect.
+oldmoviemusic Then watch the beginning, more than once if you need to...
If only the fans of the shows could talk like this.
some do and i think i am one of them......the more passionate you are the more intelligently you can talk about the show and characters
@@kdizzle901 Unfortunately not so. I've come across many people who post on the internet about a show often with emotion so one would definitely refer to them as passionate fans.
However they have very fixed ideas of what the show should be, what the characters should do. Any kind of discussion with them that questions their beliefs or opinions does not result in any intelligent response.
I love how all the showrunners are amazed by how Shonda has so much on her plate but is still on top of her game and her shows are two of the top shows on network television.
People are in awe of Shonda!
This was one of the more entertaining roundtables to watch. All of these showrunners are great writers and it was nice to see all of them interact as well as they did with one another
this was brilliant..especially having terence winters and vince gilligan in discussion about their shows together
Breaking bad is art.
It's a master class
Boarwalk empire is a masterpiece specially the dialogue
Oh really is it? I thought TV shows where some form of scientific studies. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. Btw is water still tasteless.
+hriday jotsinghani Why U mad, Bro?
you mean fan service
It's easy to create nothing at all and feel superior. Once you start making things, you'll find out that it's hard to make them, hard to make them GOOD, and hard to get people to pay attention at all. Most creative people, even if they've never done anything that great, have had to work really hard. You can respect the hard work without liking their stuff.
I love how everyone is stunned by shonda's work schedule
Its amazing seeing Vince listen to Terence Winters talk about killing off Jimmy in Boardwalk. That was detrimental to that show. Vince could've done the same with Jesse in Breaking Bad, but of course Vince knew better since he is the better writer/showrunner by a landslide.
+Ahiru77 that's a bit harsh. Terrence Winter worked on Sopranos. Sopranos. He made a mistake with Jimmy for sure though -- after that the show went downhill killing all the most likeable characters. The deaths of Jimmy's wife and Richard Harrow took the cake.
Yes. The Sopranos, Mad Men, and Boardwalk are about the human experience using the freedom of the criminal life to show extremes. The Wire is more journalistic. Breaking Bad is, as Cassio said, an epic novel-thriller, more fantastical and about elaborate story-telling itself.
fantastic roundtable. Thanks for posting...
it funny how these single individuals have the control of these tv shows that are such a big part of our lives
What a great group of people. They seem like down-to-earth leaders.
Wow, that table is full of gods and goddesses! Some endlessly talented people here.
Rhonda Rhimes is such a boss!!
Yes!!!
SHONDA....
Thank you.
Everyone says "If theres anything else you can do, do that instead" about every job in existance.
thank you very much for this, fffianist, I really appreciate it!
Much respect to everyone here
haven't seen all there shows but there all hard workers
Gilligan truly deserves all those closeups
I love that Vince Gilligan mentioned Gillian Anderson! Sweet! :D And I can actually picture her acting that way lol! I will always love The X-Files...
Thanks!
wonderful
good job
Fascinating video, but I agree Vince Gilligan is the king
Vince Gilligan is the only one who matters at this table. Everyone go away and leave him at the table by himself. Thanks!
Bravo Vince
They always have new shows. I was just referring to the shows that made me fall in love with them.
Vince Gilligan. Genius
They should have david benioff and/or db weiss in this discussion. Especially about killing off characters
Agree those guys are senseless in a good way lol.
Wow, this is very interesting! This roundtable gave us a lot of insight into a writer's/showrunner's mind and about their shows. As a Breaking Bad fan, you can see how much Vince Gilligan respects Terence Winters, a writer of The Sopranos and showrunner of Boardwalk Empire. So I don't understand why people here are quarreling about Breaking Bad and The Sopranos. Lol Both shows are excellent and on the Top 3 Best TV Shows ever to have been made.
COMING OUT OF SOME DEEP ANESTHETIC
Veena Sud- Your show, The Killing, is the best crime drama in history. Your writing was nothing short of magnificent. My wife, and I, are very picky television viewers. While watching, The Killing, we couldn't wait to see the next episode. I can't remember the last time a television show made me feel that way! Vince Gilligan- You're a genius as well!
Can someone please give a quick blurb of who all these people are and what shows they run? There's usually one in the video description, but not here :(
Man I would have loved to have been in this room: "Alright guys, nobody leaves here till you create me a show."
It’s pretty ironic now because Jon Bernthal said that the best thing that ever happened to his career was getting killed off The Walking Dead
He was busy? What's AMAZING is that they got all of these people together.
>all these kiddies saying 'OMFG VINCE GILLIGAN SHITS ALL OVER THESE OTHER MERE MORTALS FACES' when Terrence Winter - the guy who wrote a lot, if not most, of the best episodes of The Sopranos - is sitting right there
lol
You know, its their loss, they see the surface and enjoy it but don't savor all the little things.
Agreed.
that's true. i didnt think of the hell they went through to synchronize the schedules
And this is the reason I love Mad Men. It truly breaks the tropes on what a drama CAN be, or what a drama HAS to be.
Almost every other show out there is just The Sopranos in a different setting. I don't feel quite as much that I can say that with MM than the others though. I personally prefer stories that are more character driven and subtle(MM is so subtle, most people quit because literally 90% of things fly over their head. Think of what people say about Arrested Dev but applied to a drama)
Terence Winter is awesome too. Pretty much everyone here had some great insights on writing.
The guy barely talks at all, he's a sponge. They talk about things I've seen him talk about in interviews, about directions they've gone that are directly contrary to decisions he's made, yet he barely says a word, he just sits there looking fascinated. To some that might make him sound even greater - as great as he is - and he is - his show I think is the best of all time. By his own admission, there are lots of great people working on it. He's certainly not alone.
I love how, 29:00 minutes into it, Vince kind of unintentionally dwarfs everyone else in the room. And, he's still such a nice, casual guy. It's as if they were taken by surprise, yet paying reverence to the messiah who perfected their craft.
Vince Gillian Interview 27:08
Shonda barely spoke? I wish she had jumped in more without having to always be asked a question.
I never had the time to watch The Wire but I hear it's awesome and it has a really high rating
He certainly doesn't sell himself that's for sure. But I think he would agree, the quality of the show is due to all of the people involved. It's an extremely impressive ensemble of cast and crew.
Veena Sud, You crack me up. "There's always DNA and it's always solved quickly." I can't tell you how many time my wife and I grind our teeth over that very issue on other shows. The convenience factor is too high to be remotely believable. One of the things we love about The Killing is how Holder and Linden are flawed. And they seem truly flawed- not like it was thrown in there for just a couple of episodes to round out a character..
I wish I had seen this earlier...
Gilligan, Winter and Gordon. More than enough for me.
I haven't seen season 5
Two best shows in contention for the best show ever are- the wire and breaking bad. Breaking Bad takes the top spot for me by a small margin for its consistency...the wire wrote about more impactful and important issues but there was some plot lines that almost lead it astray
Nice to see women up there!
Agreed, I have no idea why it has such an amazing Metacritic %..
Lmao them talking about twitter
Could somebody please label the Vince Gillian bits? I'm interested in those only.
VINCE GILLIAN. PERIOD.
How can Homeland be so acclaimed! HOW!?
I'm afraid you're right. I used to enjoy reading the opinions of others fans about the characters development and psychologies. The series reinvented itself as a crime thriller, somewhere in the middle of season 3. That fact attracted to the circle some very specific kind of people - so when I read their comments here on UA-cam for example, I'm ashamed for them, for their vulgarity and shallowness.
I haven't watched the Sopranos yet, but I've heard good things, if it's even on a similar plane to Breaking Bad, then I think I'll thoroughly enjoy it. Oh and RIP James Gandolfini, that's gotta be said too.
they would need new shoews, as the ones u mentioned are not on the air anymore.
Because he produced and directed nearly all the rest. And it's his story, all writers run it through him first.
A perfect roundtable is David simon, David chase, David milch, Matthew Weiner, Terence winter & Vince Gilligan.
what about The Wire, or Mad Men?
david chase. all said
And thanks for choosing Charlotte to base Homeland out of. We love this show and will continue to support it as long as it's on the air. And long after as well.
my brother has most of the comics, or whatever. but i'm more interested in following the story as a tv series, not a comic. though i did come close to borrowing them after season 2 ended, to learn about the governor and michonne.
It would have been interesting to hear what David or Dan from Game of Thrones have to say
terrence winter and vince gilligan are gods
Because shows constantly come and go (get canceled).
Shawn Ryan just did Last Resort and was just working on Beverly Hills Cop as a series, but its being converted to a feature film instead which he will probably still do.
Josh Friedman just worked on a ton of pilots and was just working on a robot cop series for NBC and a pirate series, Crossbones, for NBC as well. Now he's been hired to write for James Cameron's Avatar sequel trilogy.
The point is that these guys are constantly working.
Not to mention that Gilligan HIMSELF is inspired by Sopranos. Walter White's CHARACTER is inspired by Tony Soprano (and Cranston has even said he wouldn't exist if it weren't for TS). AND Gilligan even mentions that a scene in BB was inspired by a scene in The Sopranos.
AND that the most recent ep of BB "Ozymandias" being inspired by a poem is a homage to the 3rd to last ep of Sopranos being inspired by a poem written in a similar fashion to the Ozymandias poem.
People are fucking hilarious.
I respect the actors and writers a lot but the show runners have a pressure that most people in the entertainment industry will never have.
To be able to get you're idea out there and get people to show that idea in front and behind the camera and see if you're idea will be shown is an uphill battle.
Major Spoilers. Otherwise really entertaining. Big difference in story/drama backgrounds here. Enjoyed the openness and honesty.
its the sign of a showrunner who cares more about boosting ratings than staying faithful to the characters "journey".
If you're talking about Walking Dead, its based on the comic but not DIRECTLY based, the story is quite different, there are new characters in the series, and characters that dont exist at all. Although the characters do exist in both series and comic, they die/survive in different ways. You should look into the comics as they are on a parallel universe from the series.
i came because of the thumb nail lol
maybe David Chase, but in 2013, it's Matt Weiner
I think most BB fans just found that as another reason to kill her off. I see that on fan sights all the time, the mention of her hopeful death.
no kurt sutter?
one of the Dexter writers should be on this
Because Vince Gilligan with breaking bad has won more consecutive awards than any of these other writers combined and his show won drama of the year... Wouldnt you be jealous if you were a writer?
He writes the outline of the story, and the writers fill in the dialogue?
How genius is he if he's only written two episodes?
how is matt weiner not there?
Glen Mazarra, i'm sorry, but killing of a character for the sake of surprise is dumb. I feel like killing Dale cut more story opportunities than it added.
uhh, isn't the tv series directly based off of the comic? so it was the comic writer's decision, not the showrunner's. that is, if the showrunner decides to stay faithful to the original plot... so maybe you have a point,.
OMFG THAT IS SO FUNNY. SHE WAS DRUGGED HAHAHA. I SENT HER FLOWERS... I CAN'T BELIEVE AI CAN DO THAT..
Been waiting for the real people in the biz. The 'down in the trenches' types who know how to keep things rolling. And know it's a business. Period.
Terrance Winter is kind of a cool dude.
It's the highest rated show AMC has.
I don't really feel like or want to continue this argument but I bet anyone could think of more than 5 people who deserves to be there more than her. I am not particularly saying that she is bad or she does not have anything to say or add to this roundtable,I am just saying there are people better than her,who could have added more to this roundtable of showrunners and the rest of the showrunners in this roundtable were at another level compared to her.
There is a new showrunner for The Walking Dead, each season has had a new showrunner. No wonder the pacing had been off the rails since the end of episode 1.
GLEN MAZZARRA
came here for gilligan.
There is no series named "Hollywood Reporter" It is the host show. LOL
True, but I also felt the show had lost it`s atmosphere and tension
That's a bit narrow minded. Terrance Winter is there! He was a writer on The Sopranos and now he runs Boardwalk Empire! Vince is a masterful showrunner to be sure, BB's excellence isn't up for debate. All of these people have tough jobs and I can't say I watch all of their shows but it's really interesting (for me) to listen to all of them. Vince has done PLENTY of one-on-one interviews. Look them up if you just want Vince.
