Why are Our NEW Tides Shaft Seals Leaking?!

In this episode we review the common causes for Dripless Shaft Seals to Leak or Drip and why our Brand new Tides Marine Shaft seals continued to leak!
We had a slow leak on starboard side and an recently developed an infrequent drip on port side. Due to age of Boat and Seals we decided to replace the entire unit rather than just using the spare seals to repair the leaks. After replacing both starboard and port Tides Marine Shaft Seal systems we re-launched the boat only to find out that the new Seals were both leaking even worse than before!
We deduced that the problem must be the shafts. We contemplated buffing out the shafts, trying a custom made Glides Seal system ( to cover some imperfections in the shaft). We sent the shafts out for inspection ( hoping for repairs). But unfortunately we were told we needed 2 New shafts!

Good luck. As long as the shaft is in good shape the new seals will be perfect. We have no issues w the Tides seals!!

Are you able to provide an approximate charge to lift your vessel out of the water? As well, what are the new shafts made of? Stainless or duplex stainless? Thank you in advance.

I believe they are stainless steel.
Cost approx $1000.00 to haul out/ block and launch.

We gave up on our tides marine seal could not get it to seal so it’s in with a Volvo penta seal.

That is very interesting to hear. I have to say, once we got new shafts the Tides Seals are functioning perfectly. No leaks. Our shafts did have very minor curve noted so we suspect that was our issue.

A horrifying BOAT per foot x 2.( 19 feet long).🤬 🤑. They no longer recommend repairing shafts since they wont certify repaired ones.
