I am using KP3 to help trigger the samples I've recorded previously so I could demonstrate a couple of sounds JMJ used simultaneously. download from here: bobbyblues.recup.ch/roland_d-5...
I have my D-50, this keyboard has something on the keys, the way they were manufactured, an special bounce that makes you punch them and do solos. When ever you get close to a D-50 just playing the keys is fantastic, no other Roland keyboard has that sensitivity.
You must be joking. Jarre totally had neglected sound designing and used only presets from other sound designers. Probably he was very tired of tweaking
I absolutely adore the Roland D-50 - it's one of the most characteristic sounding digital synths of all time. Yes indeed the bizarre but very brilliant plucked vocal synth sound on Computer Weekend was originally from D-50
I have been Jean-Muchel Jarre fan since 1987 and I bought my very first JMJ cd album called Waiting For Cousteau from 1990 ☺ My very first JMJ concert on VHS tape I bought in 1992/1993 was his Paris La Defense concert in 1990 and years later I bought some more of his cd albums etc he have composted/played ☺
D-50 is a classic, and slings me right back to 1988, Jarre Docklands (I was there) and the meaty, full, noisy sound of the D-50 is hard to beat. It was a good regular synth, the ONLY gripe I had was that it was a bit sluggish MIDI wise, the M-EX board sorted the Multi-timbrality side out. Fantastic vid man:-)
yeah, but the real challenge is revolutions UK 10min18 sec. or revolution industrielle II (same). the most intricate piece ever written by JMJ (after Equinoxe ofcourse 😀). I got goose bumps from you playing my hero. Thank you!
Over 37,000 views and only 102 people could be bothered to click the like button. Shame on you. Also there are 2 people who clicked dislike? What for exactly? These are the exact sounds used, and the playing here is impeccable! Great work fischek.
I have never played a Roland D-50 before because I have never got aquainted with peoples in Norway or got friends who maybe have had this synth. In the 90's bought my very first Synth which was Kuzweil K2000, but a person who visited me like that synth and asked if he could buy it from me and I accepted it, but regrets few years later 😟 At the moment I still have my Yamaha PRS-E433 here in my apartment I use to play for fun even though I am not good playing on it, when I want to play some if JMJ melody tracks or songs. There is some soundbanks coming from Roland D50, which have being used on JMJ cd album Waiting For Cousteau ☺
Look here Another JMJ album where are appearing some D-50 sounds. Roland PN-D50-04 "Marshy Zone" patch has been used in "Calypso Part 2" (Track 2) as the introduction special oceanic FX. It is then enhanced (0'07'') with the Metra Sound "Rubicon" patch:

Nice sounds. D-50 is my favorite synth of all time. I've owned a D-50 since '88, and recently bought a D-550, however, I just NOW found some of the D-50 sites online. I haven't started working through the sound banks yet, but look forward to it. A side note- I'm wondering if there are any Vox Humana (polymoog, Gary Numan) patches for the D-50 out there... ever see any?!?!
Very cool! I love to play Jarre stuff. If I had money for a Elka Synthex I would get one. But this convinced me to by a D550 right away. Are the sound you play standard presets or patches you have made or dowloaded from the web?
Thank you for the patches. I love them! I have been downloading patchbanks all night, but I could not import a single sound. Yours really work! What program do you use to import sounds? I tried midiox, but the only that work for me is the D5virtualEditor.
Simply incredible! You are great! Just for info, what have you used to record the pattern? It looks like a Korg Kaoss Pad but I think it's not the Korg...
@fischek : I took an overlook on Access products, they seems cool. Do you know how are Waldorf products, and also Novation, Kurzweil and Yamaha ones? I also tried to find something on the Roland site, but they have so many products I can't find something's specific for the dance music (such as the old good DJ-70). Now I have a Yamaha DJX, but it sounds "old", I think you understand what I mean. Sorry for all these questions, I hope I don't bore you!

Interesting demonstration. Are these presets, or did you tweak them yourself? The Korg T-1 presets, for instance, can be heard everywhere on Vangelis' (if I remember correctly) 'Direct' album; a similar case to this. A D-50 (or D-550) is still on my 'should get one of those one day' list, although it would be of course interesting to try to recreate the sounds on my EX-5.
@fischek : LOL, a real-time answer, it's quite like a chat! :))) Well, so you keep your preference for Virus... than I will go for that! Thanks a lot, I appreciate your help!
@fischek : thanks a lot, so I recognize musical hardware better than what I though! :) You look like an keyboards enthusiast, maybe you can help me to solve a doubt I have: what could be nowaday a good synth for dance music? I discovered D-50 in an Ice MC's 1994 video, this keyboard is an emblem of the '80s-'90s, but now I suppose it has some "old" sounds...maybe not, I don't know, for this reason I ask you an help! :)
Hi fischek! I have got an Roland D-50 and the sounds here, too. The sound at 3.20 I have found as well. It is called "Nice Synth 2-1", from the Bank D-50 "Synth 4-5" Have you got all the other Sys-Ex Banks from the same website as well?
Is it possible to put downloaded midi samples taken from Roland D50 and Yamaha DX7 from synthzone or similar websites into the Juno-D Editor patch program and then play the patches (with the D50 and DX7 samples) on the Juno-D?
I downloaded some of these sounds from synthzone website. I wonder who created these sounds. Does anyone has any idea who created these? I thinks most of the D-50 internal samples were selected by Eric Persing (who's at Spectrasonics now). He also programmed the factory patches. These Jarre sounds are obviously not factory patches. Also, the bank that I downloaded from synthzone doesn't have all the sounds in this video. I wonder where I could find all the rest of the D-50 Jarre sounds
What is the patch you use at the begining (the drum of Industrial Revolution)?? And the voice of Comuter Weekend is from D50 or is sample?? I just bought a D50 and I don't find this patch in
Hello fischek :) I assume you are Jean Michel Jarre fan too? I have been that since 1987 and I still like his music :) But I have a question to peoples, who have played some of his tracks and songs from their synths and keyboards and I'm still wondering what kind of sound can you hear from Francis Rimbert Synth/Keyboard, who played together with JMJ on his Paris La Defense show, when Revolutions was played? I wondering the sound after JMJ said Revolution and Francis Rimbert start to play :)
and about Calypso 2 from the same concert Paris La Defense after JMJ pointed his finger up and jellyfish is shown on the skyscrapers and this strage sounds will be heard, and you can see someones hand is bouncing on his keyboard/synth keys :) It's that a Synthex sound for example? I found something about that for many years ago on a website, which not exist anymore :(
No it is not normal, that means the battery inside your Keyboard is almost dead, or dead. I suggest if you open the unit, and look at the battery it takes a 2014 cell if I recall correctly. When you change the battery make sure the keyboard is on or else you would erase your preset sounds on your machine. If you have the factory card you can power off the unit and carefully remove the battery. Be Very careful not to get electrocuted.
+The Rougemacintosh yes, I understand your question :) I am telling you I didn't create the patch, I found it and loaded it. This is probably the original patch Jarre used actually.
fischek can you check on UA-cam about a Jean Michel Jarre track called Calypso 2 and listen to a strange sound been played from that track? It is not in the beginning of Calypso 2 but about few miutes in the track. The sound you can hear sounds like a mouth harp, but I don't think it is a sound of that. Nothing beats the sound of a Roland D-50 especially on the album revolutions
beautiful synth with an amazing sound - even still...

Great video, as always.
Hi Gattobus, just wanted to say I bought a DX7...should arrive in a week or so :) (talk about late reply, I hope you're good my old friend)
the first sample 0:05 to 0:10 is internal and is called "Machine Run"; the second 3:29 till the end of video is sampled from the original track
Beautiful, my brother. Now with that equipment you can release your own 'Revolutions' album. Congratulations.
Excellent demonstration. Really well played. Five stars!
