The whole point of the trigger system is risk management skills. People who say it's something random don't really understand the core of it. Everyone knows each deck only has 16 triggers so early game triggers happen but unless the opponent defies the odds it's mostly not too impactful. Once you make it to grade 3 with twin drives on board that's when you have to be aware of the higher chance of triggers and guard accordingly. Defensive checks are a nice surprise to get but if you are taking say 4 damage in one turn you increase your chances of pulling a trigger cause you guarded accordingly earlier in the game so that you can just eat those hits during the opponents big turn. Decks that can also thin out cards from it are good because late stage of the game they are literally stacking the deck in their favor. It all comes down to risk management when it comes to defending with the limited resources you are provided in your hand and on the attacking side mounting an effective offense while holding on to resources to survive an attack from your opponent next turn
Glad to see new people coming in, especially personalities from other games and I hope you enjoy your stay. I think the thing with the OT is that you love it at first but as time goes on and you improve you tend to dislike it more? Of course, for a new player to blow past an experienced vet feels awesome and anime af. We gravitate to that of course, but as you invest more time into the game I think most people like seeing that time rewarded and OT feels like if you were playing a game of chess but at any point without warning either you or your opponent would have a grenade go off under your seat. If it happens to you well you feel awful and if it happens to your opponent THEY feel awful and you don’t really feel accomplished? So it sort of creates this vibe of “oh well I guess we’re done here then” which long term players sort of grow tired of
I agree that the drive trigger system is what sells this game, it not only gives you cards and can change the outcome of attacks but also gives information about your hand to your opponent (and of the triggers that remain in your deck). Even as a premium player (where you have many more ways to deal with things) I don't really like the overtrigger at all because I feel it's too uninteractive, it can do nothing if checked first turn, it can lose you a game if checked defensively and there's not much you can do except for very few decks. You can play around a 6th damage heal trigger most of the time. Anyways welcome, I'm glad you're enjoying standard!
The trigger system along with Counter blast really makes you play a risk / reward system during combat. The people saying triggers randomize the game aren't keeping track. There are only 16 triggers in a 50 card deck. It's possible to draw them and do they aren't flying out of the deck unless you're opponents are getting lucky. The Overtrigger hates is wild to me. It's 1 card out of 50 and half my games it never comes out of the deck. I usually draw it at the start of the turn more than it pops up in a check.
I entered my first d series tournament after set 5 dropped using a borrowed tamayura deck. I won every game I saw an overtrigger. Came first. The only play I needed to know was how quickly I could get my dinosaur out to swing, put it into soul, and recall it for another swing.
CFV has become my main game now, moving on from Yugioh. My favorite part is that the game is very interactive. Turns are quick and the game is structured in a way that both players get to try to do their thing even if their deck is bad. There’s no card that actively says, “no you don’t get to play the game”. Even getting grade stuck in the other formats is a rarity now aside from being mega unlucky. The damage mechanic is very skill intensive, learning when to and when not to take damage to have enough Counterblast for next turn without dying. Alternatively, the highest skilled players know when certain decks want to make power plays, and deliberately only attack the vanguard once so that the opponent has only so much CB to work with. Maybe they overextended last turn so with only one CB they can only make a very mediocre play. Of course you also have to know the limits of your own deck. Not attacking the opponent’s vanguard may give them a bad turn, but if they’re not at high enough damage you might not be able to kill them next turn either. It’s a pretty cool balancing act. As for the OT, I personally like it. The trigger system is what gives the game its most unique identity and the OT just really leans into that concept. It’s also funny how it can be both a boon and a curse. Maybe you wanted to take damage to have enough CB but you damage checked OT. Maybe you want damage so badly you choose to put the 100M power on your rearguard so that they can still hit you XD. Side note: Funny how I stumbled into this video because I was looking to pick up GA. For the time being I’m picking up the Slime Silvie preconstructed deck since I love the artworks of all the slimes.
Coming from an ex-Vanguard player, I hope despite my opinions on the OT, you still continue to enjoy the game. Vanguard is genuinely a decent game that I think has potential to rival the big 3 tcgs despite what I believe to be one of its short comings. Glad you’re having fun with it!
I agree with the sentiment many people have that the overtrigger becomes less enjoyable the further you get into the game. You just start to experience more and more games where that single card being checked ends up becoming the determining factor between a win and a loss. Players can play around regular triggers - they're a controlled risk. But the overtrigger is another story. Overall, I'm glad to see you enjoy the trigger mechanic too. It's one of the big standouts for VG.
Is it weird that I don't really get affected by OT's that much. I guess it's because I have developed the mentality of not focusing too much competetively which is where I can see the pain for OT's coming from but as a casual. I find it hilarious when I play 3 games in a row where I get hit by an OT in the same phase of the game in the same way every single time. I can see where that can be frustrating for some people but something I have learned in life is that you have to sometimes laugh at the ridiculousness of a situation and take it in the chin.
My favorite clan Angel Feather has the rescue mechanic, where you deal damage to yourself to check triggers. The v-series Gavrail support dropped the keyword, but replaced healing with more calling/adding to hand before dealing damage. There's even a stride named Zafkiel that can drive check between 3-6 times.
I've always been long of the opinion that vanguard has similar RNG levels to the other games in the market (esp the big 3), but with the big trade-off being that the RNG of those games is much quieter, whereas Vanguard is extremely in your face about your luck chances. You do your thing, play your lines as best you can, calculate your probabilities and then roll the proverbial dice and see what happens. That may sound like an insult (and to a lot of people looking at it, it's a pretty big turnoff) but for me its easily my favorite part of the game. You play your lines as deep as you can, determine what's worth gambling for and what's not, and get rewarded for making the right calculations, and in an incredibly loud and exciting way. I've been playing actively since the EN release in 2012, and I've always found just more exciting and just fun to play overall!
I mean, I *DO* love card games 😅 Honestly the whole reason I started paying attention to it is because of the SVE collab set. I then asked folks from Bushiroad to teach me how to play at Anime Expo and I was hooked haha
Ayyye welcome to the CFV community! I've been playing on and off since early limit break era, so I've seen many ups and downs! I have to say this current format of Vanguard has been the most fun I've had with it in years! Deck builds are spicy and the overtriggers can be (emphasis on can) pretty hype! Hope to see u cover more CFV for sure :)
japanese tcg seems to love this type of thing, and i love it. zillions puts dead units into "charge", which can then be spent to check top card for "ignition" symbol (40% of deck) which will come into play for free if hit. in duel masters losing a shield may let you play it for free, if it has "shield trigger".
If you really like drive checks, you should try bastion and most things in keter sanctuary. They tend to manipulate drive checks and gain extra checks and such.
Glad u are enjoying yourself. As for me I personally like the Overtrigger because it gives a unique mechanic for D-Standard which I find very enjoyable since I been playing this card game for years now. Plz continue making more content on Cardfight Vanguard.
As someone who played since the first Vanguard set, I'm glad to see new players join us. You should have been with us for Legion. That was a fun mechanic. Once both fighters were at Grade 3, return any 4 units to the deck (this was before order cards) then take a grade 2 listed on your Vanguard and put them both on the Vanguard circle. They then attack as one.
I also recommend looking into Dear Days. Its the most recent game for PC and Switch and the first we got in English. Only downside is it goes up to D-BT10
Dear days is expensive for what it is. It's the official sim, but the developer is notorious for not caring about the international audience and trying to sell the base version for 70$ and the expansions for bundles of 60$...
The trigger system certainly leans itself to luck, however it also introduces assumptions and estimations in the game. At all times you know how many cards are in your opponent's decks and you know triggers that have ended up in their hand from drive checks, damage checks, guarding etc. So at every point, despite the game lacking in main phase interruption, you are weighing your options with "what are the chances they will check a trigger on this attack/on this damage", "should i risk a no-guard and save hand or will i be punished", "how should i split my guarding given they have X chance to hit triggers, do i have to pray for a defensive of my own" etc So you do have some control in the system (heavy trigger sacking is not easily dealt with, but consider this the antithesis to other games being top deck heavy, whereas in vanguard you see at least half of your deck every game)
The Overtrigger mechanic is one of the best mechanics in VG, so much fun to drive/damage check that, and ooo soo satisfactory when dealing with the Opp OT turn.
you mention that luck factor can allow you to make a comeback from a losing game. but the same can be said for the opposite of that , you can also suddenly lose when you are about to win
Yeah i love the variance triggers adds to the game. The OT is too much, but if I wanted to stray away from variance, I I wouldn't be playing a freaking trading card game, where part of the excitement comes from variance. It just makes the battles just exciting to play and watch too.
Glad you are enjoying vanguard. I am on the other hand will not play this game anymore due to that over trigger. I think it should be something used for casual play only.
The trigger system + having a unit that represents the player, are the main reason why i've enjoyed VG for a decade now. The trigger system its not perfect(insert overtrigger clickbait here), but it makes the game exciting. Having a unit that represents the player, for me, helps the sell the fantasy of a battlefield, with you throwing hands with your opponent.

It's interesting, but I didn't like ot in the game. They need nerf ot I think. Maybe shield 30-40, power not 100 mil, only 100k, but its too much I think too, if 100k you need defense somehow without pg. I think +50 will be not bad, ot making new ot trigger effect who give you + 30-50k and you can have 2-3 of this triggers in the deck and some stand one of your rest rear. It's like stand trigger from og series but way stronger
@kbydance oh, no. Sorry. Should've specified, you'd only run one copy of an over trigger. You run your nation, then all the no clan ones. No idea if there's enough to fill 16, but it'd still be funny
