Landing a DJI Mavic on a moving boat.

- The key to landing on a moving boat is to make sure ALL automatic modes like auto return home on low battery, collision avoidance, downward facing sensors etc are switched OFF and the emergency motor stop in flight option is enabled (otherwise even after landing it won't let you switch off the motors as the boat is moving and therefore the drone doesn't think it has landed)
This was my first attempt, the boat was moving at about 8kts in 20kts of wind with the deck moving up and down vertically by about 2m in the swell. It got a bit hairy (!) but after you've done it once it gets much easier and as you can see even if you mess it up the onboard computer "should" recover it before it hits the water! - Авто та транспорт
That was ONLY 20kts is wind!!!??? 😮
Looks like far more. That was a very daring attempt!
I was considering launching from a ferry, it cruises at 23kts!!! Now I'm thinking that's a bad idea!
(even if I got permission, and it was safe for the public and everything else considered... maybe in and around Port as the boat slows and landing at shore is assured.
Great upload!! So glad you recovered it, thought it was lost or wrapped in the flag at one point.
Impressive!
Been there, done that- had to use a fishing net to finally snatch it out of the air.
I fainted while watching this
thizzle91 hahhahahaaaa
Hahahahaha :-D
I just learned one thing from this: It's not worth the risk. Won't do it with my new M2P...
Wow, great respect for this! Well done
Swat it down with a baguette next time ;-)
Hey!
(I am a drone pilot!)
This is great landing guys!
nice team work
Hahaha you should add suspense music on this 😂 I did this attempt before and ended up my drone under the ocean forever
i have same experiences when battery left about 14% after 5 times try to land with hand on the moving boat. I know exactly how the pilot feel + adrenalin kick you in that time...
This is a recipe for a lost drone
Goooood
Great to see someone wearing gloves for a change. So sensible.
Good landing friends!
That is crazy hard..
The question is did he turn the mavic camera away from himself, put it on sport mode because then it would have been much easier to land it..
Because if the camera was facing you the controls would have been reversed and confusing..
Cool vid. Well this teaches people not to laugh from a moving area.
Not sure if there is a better way. You would definitely have to shut off the front sensors and maybe the landing protection.
Worse comes to worse would be to fly above the front of the boat and csc the drone to just drop out of the air haha.
That was the funniest then greatest shytt I've seen all day. 😂😂😂 Few questions tho. Y didnt they stop the boat 🤷🏿♂️
Idiots i swear hahaha the captain wanted to rush to the toilet no time for stopping not even for a drone
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
My respect for the drone
Is there any way to fix the front velocitiy to constant?
Having landed and Inspire on a heaving sail boat deck not under way but in strong wind, I agree with a previous comment to drop into sport mode ( collision avoidance off) and back it in . Sailboats are really tough with all the rigging and mast stays that you have to fly. No way I was going to hand catch an inspire in that situation. This pilot might have also looked for some slower, turbulent air off the stern to approach the boat. Boats do have a trailing wake which can be turbulent but maybe easier to approach the stern of the boat.
Been looking for good ideas for landing a drone on a moving sailboat. Yours to drop into sport mode is a smart one.
I think they should start fitting them with parachutes and airbags for sea landing lol in case battery run out, Scary
More like catching a drone than landing it
Hi Santan,
Would like to include this into our upcoming compilation if that's okay with you ?
Hi, yeah sure no problem. Send me the link if you can when it's up. Cheers.
Excellent , sure will and thank you very much.
in this cases its better to use a bed sheet or even a fishing net to grasp it not catch it. but this is a two mens job for sure! dont take chances guys
Pretty cool but.... did that pilot have a woody? :)
crazy guys ;-)
thats carzy,,,
NERVIOS DE ACERO
Why you not stop the boat?
I know from my experience that I catch a drone on a moving sailboat is not easy. Never try to take off a drone if the yacht is in motion from the swim board; it will fall into the water. I lost my previous Mavic Air 2S in that way.
WoW
Wow, that was nerve wracking, well done! - It looks super tricky though, can you post a landing attempt when it got easier? - I don't think I will be attempting to land my Spark on a moving boat any time soon!
Yeah sure, I'll be back on the boat in March, I'll post a new video then. It's not straight forward for sure but the footage you can get is amazing if you can figure out how to do it. I suggest practice landing on the boat when it's not moving and when you can do that confidently try landing it when the boat is under motor as opposed to sailing that way you can easily stop the boat if you think it's not going to work...
Bees at Sea!!!
Personally would’ve had a big butterfly net and a lot of spare props. Reverse the drone in to protect the gimbal.
I would strongly suggest investing in a bag hat and some goggles for next time.
I assume he was wearing chain mail gloves.
wowww !! My respects !! that is not easy at all ! risky ... good you have gloves ... !
Stop the boat?
MIKE D We were in a downwind Saul setup which would have taken about 10 minutes to stop the boat and another 10 to get it going again. Plus with the 2m waves it wouldn't be moving any less....
Sails down, then engine in reverse to stop it. Routine has to be discussed in advance. I am wondering about adding floating gear. At least the drone would not be lost in the case it drops in water. I will try it next week with mavic air.
But this was really extremely good pilot job!
This cause me anxiety and panic attacks 😂
Guys, I wonder if you could use active tracking to make this easier? Or a fishing net Lol.
That's an interesting idea, might give it a go. The tracking that is not the the fishing net!
Any attempts with the fishing net?
Why didnt he just stop the boat and landed it ????
theadventuresrapa!! We were setup for downwind sailing, it would have taken a significant amount of time to stop the boat and get it going again. Plus it wouldn't have helped with the 2m waves...
Norman Wilkinson ok but you did a good job of catching the drone
This is very entertaining. Wondering if it would have been quicker and safer to hove to, catch, and carry on. Boring, but easier.
I think I just had a stroke…
00:58 omg its lost
I was a Little nervous while watching this Video 😅
Why did you not just land it on the deck this would have been a lot faster and a lot safer then trying to catch it by hand you had a huge open deck to land on I take off and land on a 16 foot center console boat with no problems and my bow moves up and down a lot more
Have you ever tried landing a drone on a deck that is moving super fast plus is bobbing left/right? People struggle to land the mavic on a moving pickup truck bed, let alone add another axis of movement. You're insane.
@@bigboat8329 I agree with you, but I think J Small did not own a drone before.
This is not an aircraft carrier! It's a sailing boat with all the stuff on the deck....You can land on the deck only when the boat is at anchor.
how not to catch a drone on a moving boat..... dont try this with a flat battery......
😂😂
never do it again
i dont know what i should say...I mean you are sailers, you should now how you get best conditions to land a drone back on the boat, under this conditions, the wind, the knots, failing the first time. Why still try to land the drone at full speed? I mean its your money but a brain would have turned the boat into the wind after failing once and land it safely
Smh
guys a lousy pilot
Lol, you know nothing.
@@Frindleeguy i know only what i observed
@@Frindleeguy he used poor judgement in the conditions. the clip was posted and anyone has the right to comment. btw i fly commercially and know DJI products quite well.
@@checkeredflagfilms I fly an MD 500, sail a Bruce Roberts offshore 45, and I own a half dozen drones. Your comments are borne of ignorance and malfeasance. No one on the internet or in the world needs your bullshit.
I was a Little nervous while watching this Video 😅
