hmm I have one rifle that prefers one pellet in colders month and another in summer.... barrel expansion? Pretty sure that a pellet hitting a rain drop will have its flight path effected.
Hahaha yeah, I was tussling with it a few years ago, I started hunting a lot in winter..... I'll see what my vixen is like this weekend, see if it's as bad. Often, just going down a pellet size helps a lot.
My BSA Ultra .177 certainly suffers in these sub zero temperatures..The pressure in the air cylinder drops dramatically which certainly effects the accuracy i have found to my dismay..
The cylinder pressure will drop a little, but that isn't the reason for the inaccuracy, also as your guns cylinder pressure is still within its 'working' range. In the colder weather, I would try a pellet 1 size smaller if I was you, just to make up for the barrel shrinkage.
@@Guns2411 I'm guessing the slugs wouldn't be as affected by wind or rain, but the larger contact area of the slug body inside the barrel, in the cold would probably result in a slower slug!
Hi, mate. I Sizes all my pellets in the winter. One size down from summer and I get a consistent grouping when I'm out. Hunting for rats and rabbits and pigeons. I Always test my rifle before I go out.Shooting on targets. Like. This night was -2 and it was groping really well? I have been shooting for over 40 years and it's one of the tricks?I learnt many years ago.
@stevebygrave831 yep, that's the way to do it. The king likes 5.52 alls seasons, bar winter, that's when the 5.51 will come in. Had the same with the weihrauchs, going down a size is definitely the way to keep shooting.
Hi Phil Awesome video I’ve just got a HW97 .22 after a long time ( 40 years ) with out one. and looking after joining your Airgun club shooting and was wondering where about in Lincolnshire your are.
Is that your won FX in the video or are you borrowing one? Interested in ur opinion of it. I know FX’s have a love/hate following especially in sub12. 👍🏼
Hi phil good to see you mate, I'd love a zulus lrf but it would feel like cheating and taking the skill out of it but for hunting it would be fantastic. Temps & rain will always have an effect on the pellet especially over distance in a sub 12ft lbs.
Phil, do check the ft/lbs - fps with the chrono. As you know pressure drops with the cold e.g car tyre pressures go up after some mileage. Was just thinking only this aft when putting my hands in my pockets cos they were freezing - "I wonder if it might be a good idea when it's as cold as this to have a gel-pack handwarmer or two under the bottle/cylinder?" (Probably might have more of an effect on a non-regulated gun but who knows, might be worth you having a try and doing a video for us?) Oh! and you might improve your shooting too by putting some trousers on. 😉
@mikelangelno it doesn't affect non regulated guns mate, although the recovery of the reg may be affected because of the thickness of the lubrication. None regulated guns will be more affected..... but who runs them nowadays? Oh yeah.... Air arms lol
Mate you just confirmed my thoughts one week before the cold snap my gun was zeroed perfectly… next weekend freezing I had zero shift the same happened the following weekend must have something to with the lubricants thickening up I guess .
I run mine through tge crono for a mag usually power power when it's cold then I adjust tgr fps then all vang on it doesn't talr alot of speed variance to throw the lrf out
Great video, you are right about freezing weather it takes a while for guns to acclimatize,my m3 and hw100 suffer sometimes,so does my balls sitting on the bench in my hide
Did shoot my fx m4 in -8 and did see it lost pressure, but was bang on at 20 yards and when went in warm it went up. PS my first pcp so wonder if that could be something
70% milk in a coffee uck each to there own. Does the warmer weather not stop pellet drop as much due to the warmer air rising or is that just me being daft.( i know theres a technical term for it) Love the vids either way Phil.
@simonquintrell8686 hahahah... working fine and being accurate and precise are two different things. This sounds very similar to something I hear a lot at my range.... "My gun isn't pellet fussy, it likes most pellets" To which I nicely reply 'bollocks'..... 😄 🤣 hitting a 40mm spinner at 30m isn't accurate, if you can put pellets through the same hole at 40m-50m thats the pellet to choose! If you can't, keep testing!!! Hahahaha
FX, Airarms, BSA, Daystate and AirMaks are sh1te in the cold. AGT's and their balanced system take 2 dry fires and are spot on for the day, JTS Airacuda Max need a couple of dry fires per mag and then stay spot on ( they also need a couple of dry fires if not used for a couple of days in the summer). Now .22LR in the cold is a nightmare!!!!!

Hello mate.
We are in Bardney, about 15 mins from Lincoln.

Yes mate, the DNT ZULUS 5-20 LRF
Is that your won FX in the video or are you borrowing one? Interested in ur opinion of it. I know FX’s have a love/hate following especially in sub12. 👍🏼
@pellet_on_pellet this one is on loan mate. I've been using it for a little while, it's brilliant so far.
Hi phil good to see you mate, I'd love a zulus lrf but it would feel like cheating and taking the skill out of it but for hunting it would be fantastic. Temps & rain will always have an effect on the pellet especially over distance in a sub 12ft lbs.

That fx king must be 177 to be able to be that accurate in them conversations 😜

Hope you can understand Chinese
@steveensom7238 hahaha I've noticed the groups open up and fps go down in cold weather, so I've then gone for a smaller pellet, it helps.
@@Airgunmarksmanofficial cheers mate is that smaller in length
Great video, you are right about freezing weather it takes a while for guns to acclimatize,my m3 and hw100 suffer sometimes,so does my balls sitting on the bench in my hide
Yeah, I can get some guns to work OK in the cold, but nowhere near as accurate as they are in the warmer weather.
Did shoot my fx m4 in -8 and did see it lost pressure, but was bang on at 20 yards and when went in warm it went up. PS my first pcp so wonder if that could be something
The pressure will be fine, as its regulated.
There's shrinkage of components and thickening of lubricant causing issues.
And 20yards is far too short of a distance to tell.
@Airgunmarksmanofficial all I got in me garden lol only got one cause of Ur video but will be at a range soon first time with rifle in 20 years

My guns are fine in cold weather after being dry fired a few times. It's the fleshy bit on the trigger that doesn't work properly in the cold😅

Yeah, I have found that in the cold, if I go down a size smaller in pellet/slug, it often solves the issue.
Eg from 5.52 down to 5.51
