      Thank you brother, I am excited to finally have some community fish. Less stress than African Cichlids that are always killing each other.

    Hey Gabe, nice score and i agree with EJ as to the plants in your tank. I did learn a new tip from EJ also about using brown paper bags to create root cap.

    I just bought a bunch of plants from a website called Marcus fish tanks, they're having a big sale and a lot of the plants are cheap, I recommend going and buying a bunch before the sale ends.

    What kind of light are you using? Do you have Co2? The purple is going to go away without proper light or Co2, one or the other would do the job, light would be easier and prettier. I manage a store called Fluid Dynamics International and we specialize in large planted and coral setups in NY

      I have some led lights you can see in my next video. I am new to plants so want to try and have them thrive. Thanks for the intel.

    Dear Gabriel:
    Your friend gave you:
    Rotala rotundifolia;
    jungle vallisneria (Vallisneria Gigantea);
    Alternanthera reineckii; and, I do believe some water wisteria (Hygrophila difformis) or water sprite (Ceratopteris thalictroides).
    What you thought was an Amazon sword plant is Cryptocoryne wendtii.
    The tuft of green stuff, in the back is algae. Throw it out. If it were a moss, you would note stems, covered in tiny leaves. The strings of green are just algae.
    I’m very pleased, that you acquired these, terrific specimens. I hope you are able to fertilize the substrate, sufficiently, for them. You can wrap compost, in brown paper (like from paper bags) and poke it, beneath the substrate. I find it helpful to tie the ends, of rolls, of brown paper, with sewing thread. As long as there is no glue (from a seam) or toner (from writing) on the bag, it is aquarium safe and will merely deteriorate. In fact, I feed it to blackworms.
    Thank you, for sharing this, charming update.
    All my best,
    Sincerely,
    E. J. Brinegar

      Wow you knew the name to all these plants, I'm really happy with them. There should be some fertilizer in the substrate right now from the cichlids, but tomorrow i plan to go purchase a few fish to keep them adding to it.

      Dear Gabriel:
      Detritus exuded by fauna and left-over fish food is insufficient, as fertilizer, for a planted tank. If you want aquatic flora to flourish, it will be necessary to add something, such as processed horse manure, to the substrate. I’ve found that “root tabs” don’t work, very well. They tend to come out of the substrate and don’t provide much fertilization.
      Coal slag not only looks better, as it hides the algae, which grows between it and the glass; it also is less likely to scratch the glass, when you scrape algae off.
      You can purchase compost at companies, which sell landscaping materials. “Natural Solutions” is an outlet, in my city, which sells a 5-gallon bucket, full of processed, horse manure, for just a few dollars. That would be enough for about 10 tanks, that size. If you have no such outlet, in your location, purchase potting soil, from Walmart, which is labeled as “all natural.”
      I only make suggestions because I want others to have good success. Trust me, I wouldn’t steer you wrong.
      Sincerely,
      Brinegar

      I know you would not steer me wrong brother. I am actually going to the guys house this Sunday Rusty gave them to me to see exactly what he is doing to have the plants flourish as they have.
